Pingxie Song Translations + Thoughts

Ok so I remembered Tumblr existed and is probably a more appropriate place for spamming random thoughts than the footnotes of my fics… so here we go.

I’m sure someone has made similar posts before, but here’s my take / attempt on translating the pingxie songs.

你的目光 (Your Gaze) sung by Wang Ye There are some lines I kept the same as the video translation (which did a pretty good job!), though most I added my own nuance / loose interpretation.

Everyone is born kind, longing for (their) destiny(?). Fearlessly (carrying) burdens(?), wandering in the world. Who is born wanting to be forgotten? The wish behind a name. Faith without any complaint, it’s fine even if we meet our match. Even though fate is a risky chess move, we still signed ourselves on indefinitely. As long as we trust and rely on each other, Ping Xie Tie San Jiao Hei Hua (PingXie = PingXie, Tie San Jiao = Iron Triangle, Hei = Hei Yanjing, Hua = Xiao Hua. Yes they really said ‘pingxie’) If (I) disappeared from this world, the only (thing that would) find me is your gaze. Accompanying each other (with an) unwavering demeanor, you are there by my side all the way.

Tell me that’s not a love song from Xiaoge to Wu Xie.

因为你 (Because of You) sung by Ultimate!Wu Xie This one is entirely my shoddy translation, but luckily it’s not as hard as Your Gaze. Everyone has their own way, of protecting each other， (the) belief the same. Even if there are more troubling matters, trusting each other, (then) in the darkness there exists light. How fortunate because of you, I no longer doubt myself. All traces (left behind), contain our mutual involvement, all proof of the meaning behind (our) encounter. (I) just want to say, how fortunate because of you, I gradually came to understand that some truths, are not unclear, just that the reason, requires you to listen closely.

~ Repeats stanzas ~ Tell that whole damn thing isn’t Wu Xie’s love song to Xiaoge.

往下跳 (Jump Down) sung by Reboot!Wu Xie This one I don’t actually feel the need to re-translate, because the language is much more straightforward here. It’s like Wu Xie is actually writing a letter to his husband friends.

But I will call out the last stanza (from video translation): If I have to close my eyes in the end, fall into a deep sleep, let us meet again in our dreams. Please do not miss me. I know you’re good at this. Please?

😭 Tell me that’s not specifically to Xiaoge. He’s saying don’t linger on him, and that he knows (the other) is used to / practiced at this. Oh Wu Xie…

my rewatch is going better than expected and the jungle scenes are offering a lot to think about so here we are again

Pingxie and the art of learning

These thoughts were brought on by a couple of very brief scenes we have in episode 8. Both show a flicker of how Wu Xie has, after all the whining and fear and temper tantrums, learned to show rather than demand from Xiaoge what he wants from him. Aka what he can do to make Xiaoge understand that he wishes to know where he’s going and he has ppl caring for him.

Also have to mention that this same topic has been already discussed by @jockvillagersonly in their amazing post that really latches onto the second scene I’m studying here. Read it! It’s wonderful and very insightful and manages to capture all this with so much more flavor. Also, I feel like I’m merely offering some examples of the ideas introduced in that post here, so it adds to these things significantly.

okay so i’m almost 100% certain this scene where pangzi implied wu xie was in love with xiaoge was filmed and then cut from ultimate note ep20 (screenshot taken from merebear’s MTL, “yunyun” is yun cai):

so in the ep we had this exchange (some parts i cut out but you get the gist):

and you can clearly see above that wu xie is smirking and pangzi is pissed off.

and then the next scene cuts abruptly and directly to this:

where you can clearly see that now it’s pangzi who’s smirking and wu xie is looking vaguely pissed as he storms off. why the sudden mood change? i think the answer is obvious if you look at their convo in the novel lmfao. why they cut that bit of the convo out of the actual episode…..censorship, i guess??? rip.

Ultimate Note thoughts, part 1:

Okay. So. With the exception of that cliffhanger ending/what ending? don’t know her, this show is *chef’s kiss* fantastic (maybe the real tomb treasure is the friends made and lost along the way? Cue Hei Yanjing with printed tshirts for sale)

-(In Stefon’s voice) this show has everything: blood zombies, dubious archaeology, a disaster magnet and his squad of sketchy babysitters. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll have to return to other episodes multiple times to remind yourself of subplot 42A characters…I’ll just break down my impression of our Iron Triangle in this show.
