In JoS Salty gets released from the tree like normal, but he's had a lot of time to think about what happened to his people, and realizes how the other beasts manipulated most of them. He decides to give them all a second chance by judging their morality through life, which determines whether or not they deserved their fate, deserve to pass on, or they need to live another lifetime to reveal their true nature (he sees very black and white about this sort of thing).
He creates this cute lil river
So, Salt Cellar collects the wraiths roaming around the barrens and brings em to Salty's River of Oblivion to be judged. It's very much a ferryman-of-the-underworld shtick, and Salty asks for an object or symbol of your purpose in life as he gives you your fate at the end of the river.
All is well, Salty is coming to terms with his past and is able to bring peace to the spirits of his faithful knights, he gets to properly say goodbye.

Elder Faerie's spirit is found lurking around the barrens one day. Salty's very distressed and confused because his best friend is dead and he's just now finding out, but also what the heck is he doing in the barrens?

Aaaand that there's the premise for this cute lil AU. I was so sad that I couldn't write a fix-it fic for them because of how crucial Elder Faerie's death was to the story, but WE FOUND A WAAAAY- endgame is for them to rule cookie underworld together <3
