Here’s a lore important Sunriseverse AU piece! When Solarflare (the current alicorn raising the sun every day in this au) first ascended into an alicorn, the blast killed three young ponies and warped many others with its unique magical signature.
These three victims are often referred to in-universe as “the three angels” and there is a cultural phenomenon with strong religious undertones surrounding their death because they were killed by a godlike figure.
Some view the ascended alicorn, Solarflare, as vampiric in nature and assume they must have used the souls of the “angels” to power an alicorn transformation. Others, however, view the young ponies as sacrificial lambs who had to die so that the sun could rise again. Both factions are wrong, and the ponies were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Their positions during the blast are purposeful. The unicorn, used to the bright magical blasts, looks on in fascination. The pegasus, used to viewing the sun’s glare and lightning strikes from high in the sky, simply turns her head and closes her eyes. But the earth pony, who has never encountered such bright lights before, is completely turned around and covering her face.
