the most widely recognized type of spider web is the orb web, which is an example of a capture web, i.e. a web for capturing prey. large, vertically oriented orb webs are built by members of the spider family Araneidae, commonly known as “orbweavers”. members of some other spider families also build orb webs. “Orbiculariae”, a proposed clade, groups all of them (see also Jonathan Coddington et al. 2019).

the more common types of spider webs are interesting, whether despite or related to their commonness. for example, the orb web originated 187–201 million years ago (Jason Bond et al. 2014)!

spiders comprise a diverse order of over 49,000 species known to science. there are other types of capture webs, which not all spiders use, and there are other types of webs and other silk structures besides capture webs that spiders build for other purposes. the silkhenge is an example of a web/silk structure built around eggs, typically to protect them until they hatch or until spiderlings are ready to disperse.

some of my favorite uncommon (among all spider taxa) spider webs/silk structures:

“inverted ladder web” by Scoloderus sp. (Araneidae), photographed by Paul Bertner. this modified orb web specializes in capturing moths (Mark Stowe 1978). a moth that strikes the upper part of the web doesn’t stick because the gluey silk only sticks to the moth’s scales, which detach from the moth, but as the moth tumbles down the web, it loses more and more scales until eventually the gluey silk sticks to the wing membrane and the moth becomes stuck.

“coneweb” by Diguetia catamarquensis (Diguetidae), photographed by pablisola. the coneweb of Diguetia species superficially resembles another uncommon web, the “tentweb” of Cyrtophora species (Araneidae). in this case what really interests me about the coneweb is that Diguetia and Cyrtophora are so distantly related: Diguetia is synspermiate and Cyrtophora is entelegynic.

yesterday i reblogged a drawing resource that included how to draw hijabs - and it honestly wasn’t the best advice i’ve seen out there

now, i’m not an artist. but what i saw was a video that included hijab styles most of us don’t really wear and incorrect terminology surrounding niqabs and burqas (yes, there is a difference between the two)

so, i went searching and found a tutorial that i felt was better! these drawing guides and examples come from @/winchestermeg on twitter, and i think they’re really great 💕

this has more relevant examples and correct terminologies, and is drawn by a muslim woman

Harriyanna Hook, who focuses on nostalgic properties through the lense of a black woman.

Jacob Geller, a Jewish man who does deep dives into various media. Mostly horror and sci-fi.

Kennie JD, a black woman that does this excellent series called bad movies and a beat every week on Saturday. A series where she reviews bad movies (often terrible romantic comedies and bad horror movies) while putting on her makeup.

D'Angello Wallace, a black man that focuses on internet culture, media, and people of interest. Sometimes shorter videos, sometimes deep dives. He used to be an art channel but now focuses more on culture than art.

Xiran Jay Zhao, a Chinese woman in who looks at media and focuses on the tokenism and appropriation of Asian culture.

T1J, who talks about culture, media, and social issues through the lens of a black man. He also has big Dad Energy.

Lady Knight The Brave, a Jewish woman who does deep dives into various media, often ones that have big fandoms attached.

Ada on Demand. A black woman that talks about social issues and culture, with a focus on pop culture.

Reignbot, a Filipino non-binary person that focuses their content on horror and ARGs and true crime.

Tee Noir, who focuses on various media, culture, and social platforms through the lens of a black queer woman.

i feel like people are under the opinion that it’s ok to purposefully trigger a psychotic person IF. IF they’re a bad enough person. IF it’s funny enough. IF you’re friends with them. IF you’ve got a personal vendetta against them. IF they’re acting crazy. hell, even if they’re just existing or talking about their struggles in a public space. or even a fucking private one. which is so incredibly fucked up. your support for psychotic people should not be conditional.
