I'm sorry this is so just thoughts racing but like Julien at Castle Torch is exactly the man his father always wanted him to be in this horribly tragic way. he has honor. he has purpose. he takes his work seriously and knows how to appreciate life. he embraces the Barrowguard from all walks of life as people who share in that the same way Raimond embraced the commoner Thjazi for his heroism in the War of Axe and Vine. these are all virtues that Julien already had in him at the time of Raimond's death.

but if his father had ever visited Castle Torch, would it have made a difference? would Raimond, so used to being disappointed by his son, approach it too detached and cynical in a way that would make Julien, so used to being a disappointment to his father, retreat into his bitter and spiteful coping mechanisms? could Raimond just truly never see this more honorable and purposeful side of Julien because their relationship was so fraught by the end that Raimond was too tired of looking and Julien was too tired of showing?
