Daenerys Targaryen is the youngest child, and only daughter, of King Aerys II, the “Mad King” and his sister wife, Queen Rhaella Targaryen. By the time Dany was born, her father had been King for over twenty years and her mother was already seriously depressed. It wasn’t long after Dany was born that her mother died of suspicious circumstance, to which no cause has officially been given. Because of this, Dany never really knew her mother, and grew up only in the presence of her two older brothers and her father.
Dany grew up afraid of her father, whom she knew full well was completely mad. She pitied her brother Viserys, for not seeing it, but never told him that for fear that he would get angry at her. She thought Viserys was very similar to their father and tried to stay on his good side because after all, she loved him dearly. But after their botched wedding and the fact Viserys left her in the crumbling Sept that resulted in the birth of her dragon Meraxes, Daenerys was faced with the harsh reality of how little he cared for her. It was liberating for the girl to refuse to marry her brother, as she had been continuously struggling with confidence and independence since she was a little girl and although she wouldn’t admit it, the death of her father was a relief.
Daenerys married Robert Stark in the middle of the year 299 AL while residing in Winterfell, shortly after her sixteenth nameday. It wasn’t as grand and lavish as a royal wedding normally would have been as it took place amidst the Dornish Rebellion and just as the Iron Islands declared themselves a separate kingdom. But Dany didn’t mind, she had already experienced the fanfare and opulence of a grand wedding with Viserys. She kept her Targaryen name.
Dany remained in Winterfell with her nieces and Lyanna. While there, she gave birth to her first child in the fifth month of the year 300AL; a girl named Visenya. In the third month of 301 AL, she gave birth to her son Edwyle.
After peace had been negotiated with the Dornish and the Ironborn defeated, Daenerys spent some time in Kings Landing to reassure herself of her family’s safety before heading to Harrenhal to oversee the resumed reconstruction of the enormous castle as she had a strong hand in the planning.
Daenerys is a different girl than she was at fourteen. After a meek and quiet childhood of fearing Viserys and her father, she is much stronger now. The young woman has begun to reclaim her old stubbornness and headstrong attitude now that neither her father or brother hold any weight in her life. She’s a mother now, and her children are the driving force behind her desire to do better and be better, being the parent they deserve.
Once the realm engaged in a war with the Others, Daenerys rarely had a moment of peace. Rhaenys was hidden in Harrenhal during her pregnancy. Bandits wreaked havoc through the area, stealing food and killing nobility and famine crippled the Riverlands. Dany remained in Harrenhal throughout the war doing her best to rule with all of the obstacles that appeared.
Being the only remaining child of the Mad King and Queen Rhaella sits heavily with Daenerys, and she has not returned to Kings Landing since the passing of her older brother, instead choosing to remain within the walls of Harrenhal. In the subsequent years, Dany chose to focus on running the enormous castle and it’s surrounding lands, and her children.
