the grim reaper being armed with an enormous razor sharp scythe becomes a lot less intimidating when you understand just how common a tool scythes actually were in the pre industrial era of agriculture. it's like if we invented a personification of death called "the dark handyman" who takes souls by loosening them from the body with his wrench.
lunch break at the grim reaper factory
I actually appreciate the idea of the reaper more because of it because while it was an incredibly common tool, the idea is that it is a tool used for harvesting. Implying that we are all nothing more than crops ready to be, for lack of a better word, reaped.
Additionally, I think the idea that it is such a common tool makes the idea of being harvested and taken even more tragic. The idea of your last moments being ordinary.
The grim reaper idea first became really really popular during the black plague as well which I think adds a lot of context. When a third of your continent is dying it makes perfect sense that you’d start to see the angel of death as a being with a big sweeping tool made to cut down a bunch of stuff at once.
But it’s also important to remember that the reaper wasn’t originally meant to be a menacing figure. Yes he’s gathering the dead in mass numbers but he’s also there to gather you. He’s not just cutting you down and harvesting you. He’s taking you to the next place. Wheat is the stuff of life. Being compared to grain isn’t an insult to you and your soul. Being common doesn’t mean being unimportant or unremarkable.
