Feeling the PRessure to be a Jack of all Trades
As graduation quickly approaches I am starting to really feel the pressure. Â The pressure to set myself apart from my peers. The pressure to acquire enough experience to land a job. Not my dream job, just a job. As many PR superstars know, it all boils down to involvement and tailoring your PR experiences to secure that you are the supersar that employer wants to hire.
During my years as President of PRSSA, I acquired experience in non-profit PR through campaigns implemented with local non-profits, and agency experience through our student run firm and my current internship. Â I also developed a strategic way of thinking to reach students in member relations campaigns.
Ok, ok, enough about my accomplishments. Â My point is that you need to become a "jack of all trades" so to speak to market yourself more effectively as an employee. Plus being a more well rounded individual overall. Â As I woman and a PR student I know the necessity to be good at many things, sometimes simultaneously.Â
However, that does not mean you shouldn't find your niche and stick with it. Â On the contrary. Developing skills in several different areas will allow you to find your place in the expanding PR universe. It will tell you what you like and don't like, and reveal what areas you truly excel. Â THEN you can go for your dream job.
Point: Become a jack of all trades, to become a master at some.
Finally Time to Rise to the Top
Yesterday I secured my first internship at Proterra PR.  They originally were a small firm called Mason PR, but recently they merged with integrated marketing firm, Proterra Advertising, out of Dallas to create Proterra PR here in San Antonio.  They have clients such as Allstate, Eva's Heros, Proctor & Gamble, AT&T, Chiquita, and the Dallas Stars.
I was a little nervous going in to the interview, but I remained calm and confident. I knew I had a great resume, some experience from PRSSA, and a great portfolio. Â The woman who interviewed me was bubbly, fun and made me feel even more comfortable. Before I knew it she was asking for my help for the US Army All American Bowl over the holiday's. Not wanting to assume anything, I asked after the interview wrapped up when she would have a decision. She replied,"Maren, don't you think if I am asking for your help, you got the position?" Â I laughed and told her I didn't want to assume anything so I had to ask. She assured me that I had the position and told me she would be in touch very soon.
I was ecstatic. Three years ago I never would have imagined I would have come so far.  After all the trials and tribulations I have been through, I am about to graduate in May, my PRSSA Chapter is doing better than ever, all of my hard work is paying off, and I got the perfect internship.  I am very blessed for all of the opportunities I have been given this last year.Â
Going forward I am going to be as successful as I possibly can be during this internship. Â I am going to open my mind to learn new things, gain valuable experience and shine like sun. Â My journey of becoming a PR superstar is definitely underway. Are you on your road to where you want to be?
Inspiration from Steve Jobs
In honor of his passing, I wanted to post some inspiring quotes from the innovative Steve Jobs. Â He is a man of humble beginnings, who fought to make his vision a reality. He revolutionized technology, marketing, the music and animation industries. Â He will never be forgotten. I hope these quotes inspire you as they have me. Â RIP Steve Jobs. Â You have forever made your impression on the world.
“I want to put a ding in the universe.” (Me too!)
“No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.
Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” (People should really think about this)
“Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren’t used to an environment where excellence is expected.”
“It’s more fun to be a pirate than to join the navy.” (Arrrrgggg matey!)
"A lot of times, people don’t know what they want until you show it to them.”Â
“Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while. That’s because they were able to connect experiences they’ve had and synthesize new things. And the reason they were able to do that was that they’ve had more experiences or they have thought more about their experiences than other people.

"
“We’re just enthusiastic about what we do.”
“Innovation has nothing to do with how many R&D dollars you have. When Apple came up with the Mac, IBM was spending at least 100 times more on R&D. It’s not about money. It’s about the people you have, how you’re led, and how much you get it.”Â
“I don’t want to see us descend into a nation of bloggers. I think we need editorial oversight now more than ever. Anything we can do to help newspapers find new ways of expression that will help them get paid, I am all for.”
“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle.”Â
“Stay hungry, stay foolish.”Â
“Sometimes when you innovate, you make mistakes. It is best to admit them quickly, and get on with improving your other innovations.”
“Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.”
“We don’t get a chance to do that many things, and every one should be really excellent. Because this is our life. Life is brief, and then you die, you know? And we’ve all chosen to do this with our lives. So it better be damn good. It better be worth it.” (So true!)
“Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes… the ones who see things differently — they’re not fond of rules… You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things… they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.” (LOVE THIS!)
“Quality is more important than quantity. One home run is much better than two doubles.”
“I’m convinced that about half of what separates the successful entrepreneurs from the non-successful ones is pure perseverance.”
“I didn’t see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.” (I identify with this one for sure.)
“You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.” (Great advice!)

Leadership vs. Management
Yesterday I attended a PRSSA leadership retreat at Texas State University. Â We discussed several topics such as ethics, recruiting, fundraising, and social media. Â However, the topic that made the biggest impression was that concerning leadership versus management. Â
First, let me ask if leadership and management are the same thing? Â I say NO, but they aren't mutually exclusive either. Â Leadership is more about character, its something you are. Its a choice, not a position. I believe that being a good leader requires management skills, but managers aren't always good leaders. Management is more task and time oriented, while leaders are visionaries with a big picture. Â Leaders encourage, inspire, influence, and know when to step back and let people do their thing. They have the ability to "grow" new leaders by encouraging people's strengths instead of improving their weaknesses.
Management is more preoccupied with results and overseeing of logistics, while leaders have passion, which inspires others to follow the example. I have identified several key qualities I believe a leader should possess. Â I realize there are many more, but I believe these are the most important.
A leader must:Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
1) Be a visionary-Leaders have a vision, they understand what it takes to implement that vision and can execute it with ease. A leader perceives challenges and growth opportunities before they happen, positioning people to produce extraordinary results that make real contributions to life, their company, or their community. Henry Kissinger said, "The task of a leader is to get people from where they are to where they want to be."
2) Be inspirational-Leaders must motivate people. Â Its not enough just to have a vision, and expect people to jump on board. Â A leaders enthusiasm and passion is what inspires others to follow. Attitudes and emotions are contagious. Â As a later you are responsible for the morale of your team. Â If morale starts to waiver, your team looses sight of the goal it is trying to achieve. Â
3) Have integrity-Integrity is defined as the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. This creates trust because the never veer from their inner values, even when it may be quicker and easier to do so. Â A leader how is centers around integrity is more approachable and thus more effective. Today there are many people in leadership positions that do not have integrity. Â The world is hungry for more leaders that display this quality. Â We have several examples of these leaders in the news lately.
4) Have excellent communication skills- Remember that vision I spoke of earlier? Â Well that vision will never be implemented if you cannot communicate it clearly to your team or staff. Â A leader must know how to communicate in various forms (written and verbal) with various types of people. Â It is this knowledge that sets excellent leaders form mediocre ones.Â
The world has millions of managers, but only a fraction of them are leaders. Â Which are you?

Words of Wisdom
My favorite professor, Dr. Utecht, has inspired me to achieve amazing things, and to reach for the stars on my journey through life. On the last day of class he shared some "words of wisdom," which I will share with you shortly. But let me first preface them by saying I realized that his words were a perfect framework for creating your personal brand. Â I am leaving to go to Australia in a few days on a Business Delegation with International Scholar Laureates. Â I will be with complete strangers, (which I have never minded much, cause I can strike up a conversation with a wall) and will have to portray myself professionally and personally. Dr. U's wise words will definitely help guide me as I embark on this wonderful opportunity. Â
Richard Utecht's Words of Wisdom
As you make your way through this noisey confusion of life- Be tender with the young, Compassionate with the aged, Sympathetic with the striving, and tolerant of the weak and the wrong. Because someday you Jedi you will be all of these. People do not always remember what you say, they do not always remember what you did, but they never forget how you made them feel. These impressions are a function of four things. These four things will ensure you a smoother social and professional existence, They are:Â
1. your appearance
2. your behavior
3. what you say
4. how you say it.
Be at peace with yourself and reticent of comaparing yourself with others. Such comparisons can manifest themseleves in insecurity, resentment or vanity. Insecurity: you must allow someone to take your confidence, shake the haters. Resentment: this is a poison you take hoping the other guy gets sick. Vanity: confidence is the food of the wise man, overconfidence is the liquor of the fool. Therefore, be humble in you achievements and proud of your career, for it is truly a possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Your feedback, constructive criticism, and comments are welcome.
