Post-Abortion Counseling and Care: What is safe?
Emotions surrounding abortion vary greatly. Regret, relief, sadness, confusion, anger, hurt - even happiness. The list could go on and on, but the most important thing to remember is that every single one is valid. Maybe you feel one at a time. Maybe you feel relief first, and regret fifteen years later. Maybe you find peace after five years of sadness. Maybe you feel everything at once.
So what do you do? On one side, people are adamant about most people feeling relief. On the other, they drill regret and depression. Take a moment and forget the sides. Knock down that damn barrier that keeps you from fully wrapping your mind around your feelings. Forget the debates (no matter how polite they are), forget the fake sympathy that sounds so sticky sweet from those who pretend to care, and forget the cruel words that attack your personal decision. Focus on you and your needs.
Perhaps your needs include a nice cup of Irish breakfast tea (Mint? Earl Grey? Green?) and a hot bath. Or maybe you need a good book and a snuggle with your puppy. Maybe a good Lifetime movie and a long cry will help everything.
Or maybe your needs include a talk with your best friend. Your mother. Your sweet old horse that taught you to always get back in the saddle. Or even yourself - that long blog post lifted such a heavy weight from your shoulders!
But maybe you need more help. Maybe you need to speak with someone who doesn’t know you. Maybe you need spiritual healing. Maybe you just want to talk to someone - anyone - who will listen and leave their personal feelings behind.
So where do you go? And how do you know if a place is safe - how do you know they won’t judge you?
After some personal research, I’ve compiled a list of safe places and unsafe places. This list comes from looking at the websites and their wording and follower recommendations.
What is Safe:
Exhale - (1-866-4-394253) - Available in multiple languages (English, Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, and Vietnamese). Talkline is open Monday-Friday 5:00-10:00 PM Pacific Time, and Saturday-Sunday 12-10 PM Pacific Time. If you live outside the United States, you can call (510-446-7977)
Connect and Breathe - (1-866-647-1764) - Listening Line is open Tuesdays 6pm-9pm EST, Thursdays 6pm-9pm EST, and Saturdays 10am-2pm EST
Faith Aloud - (1-888-717-5010) - This is a nonjudgmental religious (Roman Catholic, Jewish, Unitarian-Universalist, Protestant Christian, and Buddhist) hotline. You will have to call ahead to set up an appointment. Tell the person who answers that you would like to set up an appointment with a counselor. They will take a little bit of information and then select a counselor who would be a good fit for you. They will have the counselor call you at the time of your choice. If you receive the voicemail when you call, just leave a first name and number and say that you want to speak with a counselor.
Backline - (888.493.0092) - Offers pre- and post-decision counseling and resources.
What is Not Safe:
Project Rachel - Many Project Rachel centers have websites, and almost all of them shame those who have had an abortion on the first page. (The one in Atlanta, for example, has the photo of a man with the sign “Abortion Kills Children” as their header). The main website also claims that they do not cater to those who felt relief after their abortion.
Rachel’s Vineyard - This extremely rude and snarky answer in their FAQ raised red flags for me.This is not a safe place.
Pro-Life America - Uses the fear tactic that there is a relation between abortion and breast cancer.
Option Line - This name is extremely misleading! Very anti-abortion and a lot of shameful language on the website.

hello! I just saw your reply to the post about condom size. Recently my boyfriend and I tried to have sex, both for the first time. The condom was VERY tight on him and he said that he couldn't feel anything when he was inside. Can you recommend a wider condom?
Try finding a bigger size condom either in the brand you were using or a different one! If sensitivity is still an issue after finding the right size, you could also try using thinner condoms, non-latex condoms, or internal condoms.
You can read FYSE’s post about condoms for more detailed information, too.Â
Abortion Stigma Is Hurting Women, But Here’s How We Can Start Getting Rid Of It
Tuesday marks the beginning of the “1 in 3 Week of Action,” a grassroots effort to push back on the pervasive abortion stigma that continues to impact women’s experiences with their reproductive health. Despite the fact that abortion is a very common aspect of women’s health care, many people feel like they’re not allowed to talk openly about it — largely because they’ve internalized society’s shame-based message that having an abortion means they’ve done something wrong. The events held during the “1 in 3 Week” hope to change that.
Well hi there! Welcome to our latest adventure in the digital world: the brand new Planned Parenthood Action Tumblr! We’re excited to share some of our favorite things with you—from the latest victories on women’s health to our efforts fighting bad legislation, from how Obamacare works to why birth control rocks, from feminism to pop culture, and everything in between.  But best of all, we can’t wait to hear from YOU. Every day, we hear and see amazing stories from the folks who are standing up for women’s health all over the country—how they’ve benefited from access to health care, why they’re in this fight, who inspires them, and what progress means to them. We have the best, most inspiring, and most indomitable supporters in the whole world, and we love you back. So check out our Tumblr, follow us, and share with us. We’re thrilled to be here!
We talk sex, they talk politics.

can we stop referring to all sex that could possibly result in pregnancy as “heterosexual reproduction” now

A bit of good news.Â
BREAKING NEWS: Federal judge rules Texas abortion restrictions are unconstitutional
The restrictions, nearly defeated in a 13-hour filibuster by Senator Wendy Davis in June, will not go into effect tomorrow. This is a final decision, not an injunction, and will head to the 5th Circuit (a federal court) to be reviewed.
What’s included in the restrictions ruled unconstitutional?
Requiring providers to obtain admitting privileges from hospitals within 30 miles of their clinic
Requiring providers to follow outdated FDA instructions for administering a medication abortion
What’s not included?
A ban on abortion at 20 weeks, with the exception of fetal and maternal indications, will still go into effect. The majority of abortions are performed before this point.
The requirement that all abortions be performed in ambulatory surgical centers, a qualification only five of 42 clinics in the state meet, will go into effect in 2014 if it is not challenged.
This is better than nothing, but not nearly enough. Â I'm concerned about what will happen when this, or one of the other bills like it, makes it up to the Supreme Court. Â I don't think it will go well.
Abortion is often framed as a mercy bestowed upon a woman who has committed the “crime” of having had sex. Mercy is something that someone else grants you, however, and not something you can simply decide for yourself that you deserve. That’s what people are stabbing at when they say they don’t want women to use abortion “as birth control.” The fear is that a woman might get an abortion without feeling remorseful or may, gasp, even feel like she’s entitled to it without having to apologize or grovel. Basically, people are uneasy with leaving the decision of whether or not an abortion is deserved to the woman seeking it herself. What a lot of people in the gray area between pro- and anti-choice want is for women to have to justify themselves in order to get abortions, even if it’s something as simple as making women feel ashamed of themselves for what they supposedly did wrong. The problem with that, beyond the inherent sexism of it, is that there’s no real legal way to make women justify themselves, besides maybe making them sign a piece of paper that says, “I’m sorry I was a naughty girl who had sex. Can I please have my abortion now?” Roe v Wade sets things like time limits and Planned Parenthood v Casey says that there can be no “undue burden” to access, but the court decisions that shape abortion law don’t speak to “good” vs. “bad” reasons to have abortions, and for good reason. Abortion is medical treatment. It goes against basic medical ethics to require a patient to argue their moral worth before they are permitted access to health care they require.
Every Reason for an Abortion Is a Good Reason (via brute-reason)

Not only women can get pregnant.
SO OHIO JUST PASSED AN INSANEÂ ANTI-ABORTION BILL
-Physicians providing abortions are not allowed admittance to public hospitals.
-Fetal pain must be described to the woman at all stages of pregnancy.
-Doctors must tell women how much money they make from performing abortions.
-Ultrasounds include visual description if woman refuses to view image; no rape exemption
-Mandatory wait-time doubled
Gov. Kasich has until 11:59 pm on Sunday to line-item veto any or all of these restrictions. —-from post by natashavc here—-

Ohio's extreme anti-abortion measure and what it will do to Ohio women
In the heat of the Texas anti-abortion legislation, Ohio slipped through the media’s fingers Thursday when they passed a new bill that will effectively outlaw abortion as well as deny rape victims abortion rights.
The new budget bill recently passed in Ohio added unprecedented new restrictions on abortions. Ohio state law OAC 3701-83-19 (E) currently requires that “Ambulatory Surgical Facilities” maintain a transfer agreement with a hospital as part of their licensing requirements. The new budget bill, starting at line 10257, states that:
(B) No public hospital shall do either of the following:
(1) Enter into a written transfer agreement with an ambulatory surgical facility in which nontherapeutic abortions are performed or induced;
(2) Authorize a physician who has been granted staff membership or professional privileges at the public hospital to use that membership or those privileges as a substitution for, or alternative to, a written transfer agreement for purposes of a variance application described in section 3702.304 of the Revised Code that is submitted to the director of health by an ambulatory surgical facility in which nontherapeutic abortions are performed or induced.”
In short, in order to maintain their license to practice, abortion clinics would be required to maintain written transfer agreements with hospitals that the new law prohibits. On top of this law, any abortion clinic within 30 miles of a private hospital that agrees to the written transfer agreement (which will be few and far between, as most private hospitals are religiously affiliated and wouldn’t agree to the transfer agreement) will be shut down.
Furthermore, doctors are prohibited from using public hospitals to provide abortion services by Ohio law ORC 5101.57 (B) which reads:
(B) No public facility shall be used for the purpose of performing or inducing a nontherapeutic abortion.
WHAT IT WILL MEAN FOR RAPE VICTIMS:
As part of the new bill, Rape Crisis centers will be funded with an accompanying gag-order of provisions set up by these Government-funded or nonprofit centers where the state government will intervene in the rape counseling the victim gets, they will intervene in the instuctions and information that the victim is allowed to be given, and will force the rape councilor to refer rape victims to abortion clinic that will be ineligible to perform abortions under the earlier line items that I mentioned.
As well as deny rape victims basic rights, the new bill will effectively:
Cut off federal funding to planned parenthood, an organization where 97% of funding goes to testing and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, contraception, cancer screening and prevention, pregnancy testing and prenatal services and the other 3% goes to abortion services.
Mandate a forced ultrasound, regardless of the circumstances of the pregnancy. This does not exempt rape victims. If the woman refuses to look at the ultrasound, the doctor must give a visual description. The doctor must also explain the physiological state of the fetus; if it has eyelids, fingers, toes, a heartbeat. As if that isn’t enough of an intrusion of women’s rights; she must pay for the mandatory ultrasound out of pocket.
Force doctors to recite a speech given to them by the state government discussing the statistical probability of the woman carrying the fetus to full term, regardless of whether they agree with the statement or not.
Force doctors to “describe the development of nerve endings of the embryo or fetus and the ability of the embryo or fetus to feel pain at each stage of development.” Women undergoing an abortion in her first trimester must be told her fetus is capable of feeling pain even though there has been no conclusive medical evidence to prove this.
Force the physician performing the abortion to sign sign a “conflict of interest’ waiver stating how much money the doctor or his or her facility made from preforming abortions in the previous year. The physician must also provide a statement detailing how much money they or their clinic would lose if a woman decides to carry her pregnancy to term. Before performing the abortion the physician must give a woman these documents. Violation of this restriction is considered a first-degree felony and the offender can be fined $1 million.
Increases the mandatory wait time for a woman to receive abortion from 24 hours to 48 hours. The wait period cannot be bypassed unless “the pregnancy complicates the medical condition of the woman that the death of the woman would result from the failure to immediately terminate the pregnancy.” That means, for example, if a woman is raped —but is not teetering on the brink of death—she must wait the mandatory 48 hours and undergo all the above restrictions.
There’s more.
Under the new bill, Ohio lawmakers have redefined the term “pregnancy" as: “the human female reproductive condition that begins with fertilization", meaning that pregnancy begins even before implantation of the uterine lining. Many different types of birth control work by prevent implantation of the uterine lining. Under the new bill, birth control will be considered an abortion and a woman will be forced to have an ultrasound before being prescribed contraception.
If Governor John Kasich doesn’t veto the new budget by Sunday, June 30 at 11:59, these new legislatures will go into effect.
What can we do to stop it?
Call Gov. Kasich at 614-466-3555 and tell him to veto for women
Tweet Gov. Kasich at https://twitter.com/JohnKasich and tell him to veto for women
Email Gov. Kasich https://secure.ppaction.org/site/Advocacy?pagename=homepage&cmd=display&page=ActionAlertTakenPage&id=16604 and tell him to veto for women
WE CAN’T LET THE GOVERNMENT PLAY DOCTOR AND INFRINGE ON WOMEN’S RIGHT ANY LONGER!
Please signal boost this post. If this bill passes, Ohio will have some of the most pro-life and anti-women laws in the nation. We can’t go back to that.
I am coming off hiatus temporarily to signal boost the everloving fuck out of this.
Going on a brief hiatus
Hi followers. Â Life update: I am moving to a new apartment this weekend and am pretty much not going to be blogging until the middle of next week, or maybe until the week after. Â We've got a lot to do and then will have to get internet set up at the new place, so I'm going to be out of the loop until we've got everything squared away. Â The queue is unfortunately empty but I'll be back in ~10 days max. Â I'm assuming the internet will survive without me until then. Â If you're having an abortion/pregnancy/whatever crisis and want advice or help, try bebinn.tumblr.com, provoice.tumblr.com, antiprolife.tumblr.com, or choosechoice.tumblr.com.
That's it. Â Peace out y'all.
This was about ten years ago but I still think about it to this day. A close friend of mine tried to hide her pregnancy for a long time, as if it would just go away. I finally convinced her to see someone. She went to a place called CareNet, a place we had seen advertisements for in a local paper. It promised a free pregnancy test, sonograms, and reproductive option counseling. She was wooden by the time she went and was most likely completely separated from her pregnancy. So despite the propaganda videos, the pamphlets, and pressure from the center’s staff, she decided she wanted to have an abortion. They told her that there was a week-long waiting period that she had to go through to be sure she really wanted it. She went back a week later still set on having the procedure. The receptionist said, “I’m sorry, I seem to have lost record of your appointment. Come back in four days when the doctor will be here next.” When she went back in four days, they told her the doctor was sick. I told her it seemed sketchy and that she should go to a Planned Parenthood clinic. The nearest one was 45 miles away. Because of her work schedule, she was only able to go five days after that. When she arrived at the clinic they told her she was 17 weeks along. In our state you can only have an abortion up to 16 weeks unless it’s an emergency ... She was forced to carry to term and give the baby up for adoption.

This is what Crisis Pregnancy Centers do.  Their agenda is to prevent as many people as possible from having abortions by any means necessary.  They do not care about your health, wishes, or well-being.  All they care about is taking away your reproductive choices.  They are usually religiously affiliated, deeply misogynistic, and they will lie to you.  They do not want to help you.  They want to control you.
Pregnancy should not be a punishment.
A child should not be a consequence.
A child is a child, not a repercussion.
