I'm going to write a review
Okay so I started watching The Magicians out of curiosity and boredom. It's terrible. It's a shame too, with better writing and acting it's something I'd want to get into. I guess I've been spoiled by the high quality of HBO and Netflix originals. Oh well. More concrete criticism: the lead character is uninteresting and not all that remarkable and yet everyone around him listens to his directives as if he knows what he's talking about. He also is not a notable actor, unless he's doing that thing where he realizes how empty his character is and plays the part perfectly by choosing not to act. Also the leading lady is rather dull and her portrayal of a bookish nerd is at the point of satire, but it clearly wasn't intentional satire. There are a lot of really bizarre plot twists that come from nowhere. While some do add a little to the story, the story is too empty to really introduce anything of depth. There are a few good things about the series though: the guy who plays Penny is ridiculously good as an actor. He portrays an angry psychic really well and really believably, though I'm not sure why his character still hangs out with Quentin with the hate Penny harbors for him-though I chalk that up to shitty writing. I also do enjoy Eliot and Margo. They're clearly cartoons but incredibly fun and add a spark that makes this series more entertaining, though not enough to redeem some of the lesser aspects of the show. I'm about 60% of the way through the first season and I do plan on finishing the series because the plot is interesting to me personally as a lover of fantasy. It is a weird mix of Harry Potter and the Chronicles of Narnia that I like but I'm not sure I can defend it as original content. I really hope the writing gets a whole lot better. Also I hope they stop focusing so much on sex. It doesn't advance the plot or add anything to the story in the way the writers think it does. Anyway: I'll write an update when I finish the first season. I'll try and write reviews about once a week going forward. About whatever I've seen, heard, or read during that time. Let me know if you have any suggestions.
