My roommate introduced me to a D&D podcast called Dungeons and Daddies about a group of dorky suburban dads who get transported, along with their kids, to D&D land. Anyway it’s fun, hilarious, the story is well done, etc.

But something they do at the start of every episode is something called Dad Facts. Each player lists off a dad fact about their character, something about their interests or history or personality, that the other characters would have known but “off camera” rather than having all these details RP’d out. After all, your characters in games spend a LOT of downtime together in between scenes, this sort of stuff WOULD have come up.

So, now, just about EVERY RP game I’m in has incorporated Dad Facts, including ones where I and my roommate are the only ones who’ve heard the damn podcast. Some players don’t even know why we CALL them “dad facts”, but they still run with it.

Anyway I recommend it to every RP group. NOT right away, if your characters have JUST met, because some of this shit just flat out won’t be known until after you’ve already had that downtime together.

Some of mine are big and revealing, some are as simple as “Zenrae doesn’t like eating fish” or “Theria only drinks sweet wine and otherwise finds alcohol offputting” - little moments and traits and stuff you want to get out there but haven’t been able to. It helps you flesh your own character out, helps you get to know the other characters better, and helps RP along SO. MUCH. I have used others’ dad facts to help RP in game and I can’t stress enough how fun that is

And I swear in my groups I tried, like, two whole times to coin a term OTHER than “dad facts” but nope. Dad Facts is sticking.

Context: My players woke up on a pirate ship with no idea who they are (other then stats) one player picked the locks on two of the cells but the third had to kick her door down. The noise alerted a near by npc Pirate boy (npc): Panicked “what are you doing out of your cells? you should get back in them.” Dwarf ooc: “I gently place my hand on his shoulder and tell him it’s going to be okay.” me: “You heal his scurvy” Dwarf ooc: “I’M A PALADIN?!?! I LAID HANDS ON HIM???? SHIT THAT’S AMAZING IS HE MY FRIEND NOW?”

Pirate boy (npc): “Gee miss… thanks.. I feel a lot better now…” She convinced him to join them, has named him Billie and decided he’s her son now.

Druid: “You stayed like that for FOUR MONTHS!?!?”

Goblins: “Look, by the time we realized we should have come clean about this we were in too deep”

Druid: “Oh joy, I went from traveling with one miniature maniac to three.”

my favorite thing about dungeons and dragons is that you can study for it alone, wherever you are, and also the fact that i found an entire database of free resources about 5.0  that are basically all you need to play except for an actual campaign lol

What your new DnD characters say about you (to the DM)

Classic Classes

Warrior- This is my first game so I’m going to pick a durable class so I don’t die.

Cleric - This is my 600th game so I am going to pick the class that wouldn’t die even from a direct meteor strike.

Bard - I am going to be the one drinking heavily every game so I can just mumble “Bardsong” every turn from the floor.

Thief - I am going to do everything in my power to find ways to break your carefully written scenario with improbable skills like Disguise, Ride and Profession - Chef because I can.

Druid - I’m just here to shapeshift. 

Ranger - As above but I’m probably also an elf.  

Mage - I enjoy micromanagement. Like, a LOT.

Sorcerer - I despise micromanagement.

Monk - I despise you, the DM, with the fire of a thousand suns.

We had a campaign in D&D where we assembled a steampunk-ish time machine. After many sessions travelling through time, uncovering mysteries and learning harsh lessons about changing history, we had to stop a time-travelling cult from destroying the gods, and therefore the world. We failed.

Our machine crashed, we were stranded earlier than we had ever been able to travel. We found the Gods, but only a few of them were present - it was as if some had never existed. Then we realised - we had to become those Gods. Our party was entirely divine (Cleric, Paladin, Avenger, Invoker), and each of us was a worshipper of a god who had been unmade - and we were the only people in existence with enough knowledge of the forgotten deities to assume their roles.

But two of the players were worshippers of Io (in his twin forms of Tiamat and Bahamut, who would of course form later after Io’s ‘death’), and only one could become Io. The other would have to be the un-created Asmodeus.

So the most just, honourable and dedicated Lawful Good paladin I’ve ever seen roleplayed became the god of tyranny and evil. If he hadn’t, the gods would never have defeated the primordials, and the world would never have been completed.

In our setting, Asmodeus is every bit the epitome of evil you would expect him to be. Nobody but the gods who abide his presence know him as otherwise. He adheres to his role because he knows he has to - and that in doing so, the world can exist. He can never tell anyone his duty, and no-one who knows can ever discuss it.

In the farthest recesses of the Nine Hells, in a chamber sealed tighter than any other in existence is a pocketwatch of finest gnome craft with a photo of his family in it - his wife, son, and little baby girl.

They were killed by an orc army marching under the orders and banner of Asmodeus. Their deaths are what drove him to become an adventurer.

how to tell if your worldbuilding is Bad

i didn’t wanna reblog this just cos it doesn’t deserve to get seen but:

a) dwarves don’t share the gender binary that humans use, heterosexual versus homosexual is meaningless to them

b) gnomes have such a predilection towards illusions that gender is primarily based on presentation. because of consistent interaction with humans, they tend towards visually hetero relationships just for sake of public ease but gnomes all know gender is an ilusion

c) halflings are super community oriented. they would be incredibly accepting of homosexuality because frowning on someone for liking a particular gender is counter to community building

d) goblins don’t believe in sexuality they believe in food

e) orcs are 100% butch lesbians and bears. they are totally gay with a small side of being attracted to muscles and soft hairy bellies “but if they’re all gay how do they reproduce?” magic rituals motherfucker it’s a fantasy world

f) tieflings never have a predominant culture and tend to ascribe to human values, with a bit of “i’m already an outcast, so anything goes”. i don’t wanna say tieflings are super gay just because there is a lot of baggage that comes with the evil demon race being super gay but tieflings are super gay

g) dragonborn carry a lot of draconic values, one of the most notable being vanity. if a dragonbron is gay, they will literally be the embodiment of that “move, i’m gay” video. taboo my ass just try to stop that dragonborn, they’ll show you the meaning of flaming

bottom line here is really that if you thought the dnd races were straight you were so wrong. i am going to find you and rub my gay ass on your player’s handbook
