Because the existence of billionaires is predicated on the exploitation of human labor and unsustainable environmental harm.  That level of wealth hoarding is harmful to economies, as it reduces the amount of money in circulation. No one person, no family, could ever conceivably even SPEND a billion dollars anyway, and  it is inherently immoral to accumulate wealth so narrowly while so much of the world lives in abject poverty.  

Better then to create a wealth ceiling, a point at which all wealth over a certain point  is taxed at or very near 100% to incentivize people to actually spend their money rather than hoard it, stimulating the economy and bettering the lives of far more people. Better even still to create and regulate economic systems that protect workers and the environment in a way that such extreme levels of wealth accumulation aren’t even feasible.

The problem with this is that it reduces the incentive to actually do fiscally well. What’s the point of starting a business if you can’t become wealthy?

I’ll never understand why this concept is hard for people. I think it’s because they can’t actually fathom how much $1 Billion is.

Let’s say you have a badass job. A great job. You make $100 AN HOUR. You work 10 hours a day ($1000 A DAY), 5 days a week ($5000 a week!!!), every week ($20,000 A MONTH), thats $240,000 Every Year.

It would take you 4,167 years to make a billion dollars.

Keep in mind then, that if you got paid $1000 an hour, 10 hours a day, five days a week, every week, all year, it would still take over 400 years to make a billion.

You want to make one billion in a human lifetime? If you made $10,000 an HOUR, 10 hours a day, 5 days a week, every week, all year, it would take you 41 years to hit a billion.

(And that’s not counting, ya know, money you spend to stay alive on food or rent or anything. )

Jeff Bezos currently has 140 billion dollars.

1 million seconds is approximately 11 days.

beyond pisses me off that the US and england - two countries that did virtually nothing to stop the spread of covid on their own - are getting premier access to the vaccine just bc they have the $ and the desire to send all of us back to work asap no matter the human cost. meanwhile many countries in the so called third world that took covid seriously, locked down, and provided for their citizens without a second thought or complaint wont receive the vaccine until 2022 or beyond. totally fair and cool.

you can respect and admire and even *gasp* like celebrities without stanning them

i like plenty of celebrities. i like them because they're pretty, i like them because they make good music, i like them because they act well, i like them because they make me laugh and smile and i like them because they provide me with joy and entertainment.

but i never, not for a second, pretend to know a celebrity. they are strangers. they are not people i know. they are not people i trust.

at any point, someone i admire can do a shitty thing, and that sucks. it sucks because you want the people you admire to be better than that. but if they do a shitty thing, it is NOT your fucking obligation to defend them or help them or rationalize it.

celebrities are people, and you're totally allowed to admire and respect people. but when people do shitty things, it's not your job to leap to their defense.

Anyway, my sister-in-law would like me to remind everyone that speculative fiction magazine Strange Horizons (and its multilingual sibling magazine, Samovar) are 100% free to read, are always looking for stories by and about marginalized people (all flavors of queer/non-straight/non-cis and intersex, POC, disabled, etc forever), and pay their authors, artists, and translators professional rates for stories that are available to read for free online. They are especially proud to focus on content about a particular identity whenever bigots get up in arms about their inclusion (or, as was the case with the Sad/Rabid Puppies and the Hugos a few years back, have completely misunderstood what the magazine and its staff stand for).

So - here's a thing yall need to understand: LA County is bigger than SEVERAL STATES COMBINED. The impact this is going to have on the welfare of the COUNTRY is going to be PROFOUND AND IMMEDIATE. Hopefully? Other DAs will follow suit because if they do? God, we could fix some shit, we really could. Just all the abolition of cash bail in LA county alone is a start. SEE WHAT VOTING CAN DO?

Here's another thing to remember: it's way way easier to make sweeping reforms at the local level, and these reforms have much more impact on your actual day to day lives than reforms at the national level. Target your activism appropriately and don't neglect local elections!
