"depends what kind of act." she types in response. the silence fills as her thoughts simmer, thinking whether she should say anything more. was it appropriate to say 'i love you' back? why did sumin send it in parentheses? was rowan supposed to do the same? why the need to use her office number? too many questions and so little courage to ask any of them. she was never good with walls of text. it was harder for her to organise her thoughts properly and how to relay them. not to say she was socially inept, she just worried about seeming too enthusiastic. it wasn't just with sumin that this applied to either. "if it involves acting any more straight than you publicly appear, i don't know how i'd feel. you can imagine me consistently serenading you with secret love song if that happens." jests aside, she did want to know what the ordeal was. she was dying to know. it was worse with her habitual, brazen curiosity, and persistent quizzing. but enough being neurotic about hypothetical reactions or imagining how badly she could be pestering sumin with questions, lest she crosses the unspoken pseudo-partner situationship boundaries. "you're right, though. this is better discussed over a cup of tea." message sent.

the swift lighting up of the phonescreen gets the woman's lips curling in an instant at the thought of an overwrought partner getting worked up over a simple text. sumin knew just how to tie them up in knots in her little ways. not to say she was wicked, but perhaps it was just the spark of instant gratification when she does things like this. grasping some imaginary control to hog the spotlight and swerve over someone's attention to her in an instant. maybe she enjoyed that sometimes… a lot of times.

"so," she starts after ringing the phone exactly once for it to be picked up. she throws it in the air casually and with a cheerful voice too since there wasn't anyone else within earshot for her. "fake engagement." it's a big stretch but it's the most of what she could bargain with her father's demands. the business wasn't failing but her father—like a true tywin lannister type of character—wants to maintain the status quo of their family name. the songs should never sing their last song, he says to her in an argument that took place just this week. an argument that sumin wouldn't shake off because the guilt started to creep back into her shoulders and into her bloodstream. her brother (despite that useless of a fool was to her) was the perfect front to evade from all of this family business. from this obligation.

since she feels a lot a little responsible for how things went down, she had to give in to some demands for her father's sake and for her own peace. it was for her own welfare too, given how she's inheriting everything else while the old man's starting to wither away. the last she's been told is that he's getting serial work-ups privately by their family doctor. anemia, melena, something about a mass somewhere. she hasn't coursed through the folder of medical abstracts yet but she'll get to that. the first thing on her list was to tick off one request from him this week to pacify him for the meantime.

"um, too much?" the dead air doesn't worry her as much, but it does get her at the edge of her seat from curiosity.

she didn't arrive late or early, just perfectly on time. she swore to herself she would give herself a break from following such time constraints, even for things relating to leisure but old habits die hard. upon seeing her paramour, chaeyeon could hear her heartbeat pounding all the way to her earlobes. when she had asked the friend to 'dress like a whore', it was partly in jest but she was amused that the lady had abided regardless. she whistled obnoxiously, disturbing the peace that the store held before her arrival, as she approached the friend who was idly still looking at the plates. "can't tell if she's obedient or trying to impress."

"can't it be both? a good little whore always aims to please."

chaeyeon was taken aback by the forwardness, in a good way, granted there seemed to be no one around. she couldn't contest or come up with her own witticism. instead she confused desire for instinct, hand unconsciously resting on the small of her back. she stared at her, not her body, or anywhere else inappropriate. just her. a recurrent memory from a time of mischief flashed, how free and thoughtless everything seemed to be. but so much of their history had been tainted, so much of it muddled all together, that fond moments would get overshadowed by vile recollections. the clerk coming back out from the stockroom snapped her out of the reverie. she cleared her throat, realising too that she had been acting a bit unnatural the more time they would spend. it was as if she would get carried away and then something will remind her to take a step back. several steps back, as a precautionary measure. it was like a sticky note stuck on the wall when it had just been freshly painted and it stayed on for years to come, so when it came time to remove it the adhesive left the paintwork blistered. "damn..." was all she could really say back, but she gave her a reassuring smile to relay that what she said was acknowledged despite her going deep in thought.

"cat got your tongue?"

"yeah, well, you know who i'm a slave to." chaeyeon said in jest to mask the effect of weariness to whether she was catching on to the unusual behavior. she left it at that, however, on making awkward jokes about her relationship with her cat which may or may not be an allegory to other relationships in her life. then quickly, she tried to brush it off by bringing the friend's attention to one on display. "what about this one?" she felt pretentious picking the most embellished plate out of the options. it was all the yellow in it. reminded her of sumin. "looks kinda nice."

"hmm… won't it be too much? i might attract bumblebees with that."

"will you be using this plate to eat outdoors? won't it be just for home decor?" she expected this response. between the two of them, sumin always was the more sensible while all of her decisions were rooted in her invariability, no matter how hard she tried to be 'cool'. chaeyeon would notice the efforts being made to ease her into this place, or perhaps the situation entirely. a kewpie doll was held up next to her face, claiming it was a look alike of hers only chaeyeon was the less bubblier of the two. if it could talk, it would probably chime into the teasing like a form of tennis showing that chaeyeon didn't mind this sort of friendship maintenance and that she had welcomed it, in fact, because sumin had won her love many times over. "it looks weird. what are you trying to say? constipated sister?! now you're just babbling on." she scoffed of disbelief, but it was all lighthearted. her hands shook dismissively but once it was back on the shelf and sumin's attention is away from it, she was secretly snapping photos to share on her social media. "big boy..." she said lowly and snorted after.

"listen, you should make up your mind on something before i start falling asleep right here and now. can't believe you even got here early and you haven't decided yet." she said as she aimlessly walked around, eyes darting across the displays adorning the room as subtle strings upon which travel the finest emotions of past times. she wondered between them, taking in the curves of each. something about the place felt like a tiny time machine, so much of it echoing their souls. she wasn't sure if she liked that, or if it was giving her too much ponderous feelings to contemplate. it didn't help that it was so quiet and if there was music, the beating of her tense heart was much too loud for her to hear. the atmosphere was way too cheery for her to be feeling this way, and she's hoping if there's ever a next time to come back around she won't feel as heavy. it was sumin's happy place, after all. she was conflicted about the thought of being special enough to be invited and the thought that there was so much in her head that she couldn't truly enjoy herself. she stayed quiet, cautious of making sumin notice her sense of urgency to leave. she even took more pictures to crown the act.

when sumin settled on a piece, chaeyeon would find herself mentally thinking "finally" but upon the friend showing it off to her, she found it endearing enough that she felt the parasitic clasp on her heart letting go and the muscle itself switching on like a lever. like something was lifted, not because of the relief of leaving the place that brought grief, but because there was trust in the gesture. sumin showing off something to her that she may not necessarily be interested in, but still with the certainty that chaeyeon wouldn't make objections and that she would share this small piece of joy as if it was a big feat with both of them being the victor.

and just like that, they were back on track. how easily it could be achieved and how much hold sumin really had on chaeyeon. this fact, however, she was yet to realise.

eleanor might be a recluse for some who never bothered to strike her up in a conversation but for sumin, there was something in the way that woman shifts in her replies and ignite something within her. she, who was quietly combustible given the right circumstances. invisible strings pulling her like a marionette to give in to temptation, to let out a little more of what she held in and to breathe in with such confidence to overtake such drastic measures. 

the saccharine glances that stick to her skin, reminding her even when she’s turned her back and the sweet ring of the female voice beckoning her for a longer stay in an empty room for an alleged session regarding greco-roman philosophy. 

was this woman provoking her to lose herself in her primal cravings within the confines of an academic institution? 

she better not be. 

“if i could be a different person, i promise you, i would be.” the words come off bitter on her tongue as she’s aware of the missed opportunity and the blatant persuasion she’s held against. if only dual productions weren’t so hands-on for a project of the university’s that she would spend less time haunting these halls and leaving her footprints for the other to follow. like cat and mouse, except every corner is a trap and sumin was so close to falling for one of them. but today was not the day she would tarnish her spotless record at snu, especially with a flimsy visitor’s pass clipped on her bag’s handle. 

maybe she could suggest a visitation at yonsei instead  — she knows the sweet spots there like the back of her hand.

knowing the ins and outs of the industry wherein elements of sumin’s and millie’s expertise intersect with clear definition has shown her profound truths about success, especially the not-so-glamorous details of it that never see the light and never dare get published. seeing how fleur’s popularity skyrocketed especially in the era of social media’s growth, one would think that there’s no way to go from the top than to suffer a similar fate like icarus’ wings. self-preservation and consistency were difficult, given that she doesn’t hail the same flag as some of them. the competition was tough, too, with newer and younger groups sprouting like fungi every month or clustering in certain seasons to avoid timely run-ins with popular boy groups whose eager fans threaten the numbers from gaon and hanteo. 

“honestly? you deserve better than what you’ve got,” she says, unprovoked as she draws a long sip from her soda but her voice was laced with concern for the long haul of her journey. “i’m not sure if you’re aware but you rack up good nmbers for sales and this is just an estimate from a trustworthy source as far as statistics are concerned.” stealing a glance from her fast food meal given by one of the staff backstage, she couldn’t gauge whether she was successful in giving a confidence boost and presenting options for the future of her career or if she accidentally made an idol burst with a desire to quit all of a sudden. hopefully it was the former or else she’s got a lot of explaining to do at zoom entertainment.

perhaps sumin should have asked about the latest ‘snow flower’ cover or fleur’s schedule for the month of march instead. 

“all i’m saying is... if you ever yearn for more, don’t be afraid to search for it elsewhere. you’re great at what you do and i like that about you. keep it up!”

pacing back and forth with a glass of water onhand, it’s surprising that sumin hasn’t spilled a single drop even when she briskly turns after realising it’s a dead end on her path. wenhan was no stranger to her with their casual encounters at public events. but seeing him now, unresponsive to her inquiries and mostly apathetic, she wonders if this is all just in her head now.. if she’s the only one concerned or if she’s the only laughingstock here. "you’re avoiding the subject and you know it.” a shake of her head follows the way her index finger sways in front of the man, a gentle threat not to push her to the brink of raising her voice. “what are you hiding from me?” 

was she talking in foreign tongues all of a sudden or was her intel far too advanced that he wasn’t given a prior notice? it bewilders her but also frustrates her how it has come to this — this point of facing the dagger right where it’s sharp. never in a million years has she imagined that her father, song jaeyong, would divulge some information regarding a slew of payoffs and debts in illegal trade and transacting with a certain ‘li cheng’ from overseas. her father had gracefully mentioned several instances of working with these types of personalities at surface-level but each time he attempted to share more and provide depth to his sugarcoated euphemisms, she would simply shut it down and pay no further attention. her routine from last night’s encounter with her father was no different but it seems he found a clincher. revealing the connection bore no weight to sumin at first, but given a thick wad of photographs from a private investigator and the list of ‘deficits’ under li cheng’s account, the old man finally got her ears to listen. so-called deficits which are long-awaited and now sought for available liabilities to reclaim the ‘debt’ in their own terms.

“you don’t really know, do you? or are you feigning ignorance and tiptoeing so that we’re pushed to this middle ground while it still benefits us?”

caught in the middle of a dispute between her and her father on the phone, sumin drops the phone back in her leather satchel on the desk where she doesn’t even bother to check the hustle of text messages that stormed right after the call she ended. she was surprisingly interrupted and the last thing she wanted was someone gracing her as an audience to her fits of arguments with another one of those deals the family business has cornered her with. “why are you here? didn’t anyone tell you to knock first before entering?” or maybe they did and she simply didn’t notice. didn’t she lock the door on the way in? she doesn’t entertain those possibilities for now, annoyance blocking her rationality as she soothes the creases between her eyebrows and her forehead. it was too much at that moment. 

i just thought you’d like some company. 

those words, that face, the hamster wheel ironically stopping from spinning just as they shared a staredown. the initial displeasure over her uninvited guest subsides like analgesics infusing in her veins in a rapid motion. how volatile her anger is when it’s redirected, whisked away like froth until it dissolves to whatever else is around her. no matter how labile the mood her hormones would lead her to, she couldn’t justify the way she snapped at him and so she apologizes in silence. her way of doing it 45-degrees with a brief pause to sigh out most of the steam that threatened to whistle. surely, that wouldn’t suffice but it was the most of what she could offer for now. stumped, she melts back into her chair and sorts out her emotions just as she would with her office files. she wouldn’t forgive herself with another lapse from her picture-perfect visage to people. what more if she spilled over, cup almost too full for the past few years of being named the sole heir to her father’s throne that she never wanted. 

gathering a pen and some paper, she starts to write out today’s schedule to put herself at ease. busy hands keep a busy mind.

a ruffle of sumin's skirt spreads the scent of jasmine mixing with the scent of old books around the room in ripples across the soft breeze of the aged air conditioner as she gets up and changes the corner to hole up in. there's no telling how long she's been cooped up in there without a clock to dictate how late she was for her commitments, but it seems she hasn't been alone all this time. after hearing a bump or two and mirrored steps from a stone's throw away, she could sense an observer's gaze on her now with every blink of her eyes. piercing but not intruding just yet. part of her wants to wait it out to see how long before the person either knocks with an act of kindness to ask her 'what's up?' or something vile and indespicable to be done to her like in those slasher movies. it was the perfect crime scene anyway: a secluded place with no shopkeepers, a stylistic choice with the color hues of the lights and wallpapers and last but not the least — a dark, rainy evening.  

seeing how long it must have been, maybe that step was hers for the taking. "i surmise you like solace or that you like the items in this section." for her, she revered both without a working compass. the spine of the tattered children’s book she was holding was starting to show its age and faults which prompted her to slide it off, part of its dust tickling her nose as she caught it with her left hand. like curtains drawn away, she revealed herself to the silent stranger. her makeup was only light and her hair was blown to a minimum that matched the casualness of her clothing. she must have looked like those odd and eccentric personalities but she didn’t care. nobody knew who she was on this side of town. “you don’t have to keep me company.” there’s reassurance in her tone when she offers to lend the book she chose to imprint on her face. when there’s no response, she lays the book to rest by closing it and returning it to the space it previously occupied on the shelf. her new choice was a classic tale from a.a. milne. “i’m fine by myself,” she adds just as she strides around, in the midst of choosing yet another corner to take a cautious nap in.

HIGHLIGHTS OF TONIGHT’S TALK

host: now that we’ve covered the ice breakers and introduced you to the listeners, let’s delve into something deeper. you’ve been in the scene for around.. 6-7 years, right? 

sumin: that’s right, yes. i started in 2014. (nods) 

host: was it difficult at the beginning? or did you already know people in the industry before then? 

sumin: there were internships and i applied to the companies i liked and thought i could flourish in. i had a few setbacks but i eventually landed a spot in dual and worked my way up. 

host: you certainly went up, up, up with that. look at you. you could be the face of dual at this point. (the screen flashes images of sumin representing the company in several events like movie premieres and product launches)

sumin: that’s too much. hah, hello to our boss! director kangmin! (waves at a camera on the left but the host then guides her on which camera to look at) thank you for letting me go on this show. i am grateful. i won’t let you down. 

host: thank you so much, kangmin-nim. (slow claps) wah, we have to send him a gift basket for letting us kidnap your most precious employee. (does a full 90-degree bow while the staff members can be heard chuckling)  

host: you have a long list of powerful people linked to your name. one of which is son jihye. world-class prima ballerina. ah.. you two even had a photoshoot once a year ago. you seem to be the best of friends. (screen shows a-cuts of the photoshoot held in the past) how did that shoot feel like? 

sumin: it was just like this- 

host: like this? 

sumin: it’s a bit nerve-wracking for me. i’m so used to being behind the cameras that it’s more comfortable. being on the spotlight takes some getting used to. but for that shoot, jihye helped in making me comfortable.  

host: it looked so good. i hope you get more opportunities for shoots like this. (shows a copy of the magazine and flips it right to the centerpage so that the camera can focus on the couple shots widespread and collated on different pages) there’s people you’ve worked with and some people you know around the industry. care to name five people you know but not a lot probably do? unexpected names, perhaps? 

sumin: ah- okay. hm. jennie! from gentle monster and nieeh.. we’ve known each other for a long time. we sometimes travel too! our last trip was last year, we went to europe. second one would be- ah, have you heard of.. kim hanbin? 

host: jennie, wow.. big name in the fashion in dustry. (makes a count using their fingers) ah, BØRNH8R hanbin?! or is this a different hanbin. the idol? or..

sumin: yes! him! we’ve only been introduced to each other recently. he’s a chill guy, definitely worth all the praise. we meet similar faces and we bump into each other so it was easy to befriend..

host: alright, that’s two! (waves the hand for the count) 

sumin: hmmm..

host: you don’t have to explain, it’s alright. (studio plays a sound that counts down to playfull rush sumin into naming names) three more. 

sumin: miya, jung soojung from mbc, bang jisoo, haru, and.. and.. sehun of exo! (hastily mentions each name, unconsciously oversharing due to the rush) 

host: (claps as the staff gives a round of applause too when sumin raps out the names so fast) wow.. (two thumbs up) she even named seven, wow.. 

host: with all that we’ve discussed today. you’ve accomplished so much. what’s next for song sumin? 

sumin: i have a non-disclosure agreement so i can’t really divulge much of the information- 

host: (laughs) she’s so professional, we can’t catch gossip here. 

sumin: if you wanted gossip, you should have invited me for the saturday show! (refers to another show on the platform that airs every saturday, with topics usually circulating on show business and the latest local and international celebrity news of the week) 

host: (laughs even harder)

sumin: but i can tell you one thing! there’s at least three more big events for our company this year. 

host: she says one thing then claims there’s three.. (laughs) that’s more than enough information. thank you. i think the listeners and viewers are bound to get excited because dual hosts some of the most buzz-worthy occasions so let’s all look forward to them! 

host: we’ve received a lot of callers tonight. a lot of fans. 

sumin: thank you! i didn’t expect them to really call.. i told my friends about this but it’s a tuesday so i really didn’t expect them to make time. i’m touched. 

host: your friends are so supportive, really.. i think one of them even sent flowers to the studio. it’s- (staff shows the flowers) there! wah.. such good friends. you can thank them on air, if you want.  

sumin: (hesitantly looks for the camera then flashes a grin) taro-yah! sehunnie.. soojung. haru! nao bb. rj my #1 ig stories supporter!! (pauses briefly, thinking hard before smiling) chaeyeon.. (the camera focuses on her faces as she does a cheeky finger heart) thank you.. if i forgot anyone, please don’t kill me.. 

host: yes, please don’t attack her. we’re all overwhelmed by the greetings. thank you so much for watching the show. ah, wait-

host: there are a lot questions here on the page now.. it’s filling up the page, honestly. A LOT. someone’s even spamming your name here and there’s another asking for your number.. isn’t this a virus already?! 

staff: (laughter) 

host: no, seriously! look at this guy! (shows the screen of the tablet they were holding and lets the camera zoom in on the pinned comment that says: ‘hand in marriage, song sumin’)

sumin: (scrolls through the comments, smiling at each one as she reads some of the funniest) 

host: that’s enough, guys. the list is refreshing too fast, she can’t even read the long, moving ones.. 

staff: (points out that the comment section then buffers and moves faster this time) 

sumin: (talks to the host, smiling as she points out particular portions on the comment section) 

host: ah, here’s one of the notable comments! it seems to be from someone you know! (reads) 

As expected of Song Sumin, you did great! It was fun listening to your radio show appearance! Will we get to see more? I'm looking forward to it, main girl! ㅋㅋㅋ    

sumin: that’s my friend. yuko eonnie, hi!! (waves enthusiastically while reading the rest of the comment section) 

host: i give up! i might as well send love calls to our guest. the viewer numbers are pretty high, i think? based on the livestream, according to pd-nim. it’s high, right?
