Tilly sighed and gave Eirian a tired smile. âSorry about that. Thanks though. Iâm doing as well as can be expected in a situation like this.â She really appreciated Eirianâs concern; Eirian was a good person and Tilly was glad to work with her. âHow are you?â
âIt seems a little foolish to try to say weâre doing well - donât you think? I havenât come to terms with how any of us can be doing well,â Eirian said softly, glancing around to ensure there were no children nearby. She still held fast to her belief that the professors needed to present a calm front, no matter how they felt inwardly. âI havenât had time to think about it; I suppose Iâm doing well under the circumstances.â
Mr. Raymond, is this a bad time?

She looked over at her professor and offered an uncertain smile, brushing her hair back. âIâm not sure yet,â she admitted. âItâsâŠitâs surreal. Iâve been more focused on keeping the younger years calm, really.â
âIt is - for us as well.â They had handled many situations at Hogwarts but this one seemed a little beyond anything they had faced before. âWe appreciate you helping with them. Thatâs invaluable, really; thereâs only so many of us to do that and the younger ones need at least a semblance of calm. But you should take care of yourself as well. Itâs important to help others but if you need a moment, find somewhere quiet. No one will blame you.â

âShe might like it, it might give her an awakening or sheâll get really mad. In case she gets mad, just blame it on one of your wild students,â Rose laughed, imagining the situation in itâs entirety, hoping she wasnât making her professor uncomfortable in any way, shape, or form. Still, hearing so much, learning so much, it was lovely to her. Once again, she listened to the story, amazed and proved right that Professor Cadwallader was a woman to be reckoned with. Convincing her parents to postpone the wedding the point where her husband to be fell in love with someone else? Amazing. âSo, now youâre here, doing something you love and living a life you love. And they think you should be doing something inside the lines? Donât bother, really, Iâve found people who stay in a box never see anything outside the boxes walls. Itâs dreary.â
âIâm a bit closer with Mother, so she might chose to see the humor in it. Either way, she canât really do anything about it.â It was a rare thing to see a student who truly cared what was going on in a professorâs life, and Eirian was glad sheâd been walking by at the time. She cared for all her students, but everyone had favorites, and she thought Rosmerta might become one of hers. âYes, I am. And Iâm grateful every day that I am.â Time would bring along a family - Eirian hoped it would, at least - and she couldnât imagine what her life would have turned into if she had followed her parentsâ wishes. âIâve seen people like that as well and I hope I donât turn into one of them.â
"How far can your arm go before it breaks?"
"How far can your arm go before it breaks?"
Eirianâs eyebrows shot up in alarm at the words and she swerved quickly, placing a hand on the second yearâs shoulders. âI believe I saw the rest of your year heading to class. You run along as well,â she said gently, sending the boy on his way. Once he was out of earshot, she fixed Narcissa with a stern look. âTen points from Slytherin, Miss Black, and detention with me after dinner tonight. That is hardly an appropriate thing to say to anyone, let alone a younger student.â

âDâyou think we really can keep that secret from them? We couldnât keep the fact weâre worried from the group thatâs gone missing. Whatâs important that weâre honest with them, let them know weâre here to help and provide the information they need.â Not being honest with them is what got them here. They know somethingâs wrong. A girlâs gone missing. If they know nothing, theyâre going to find their own answers.
âThe ones who left are all older students and I doubt they only left because weâre worried.â Eirian said as patiently as she could manage. âBut I still stand by my words. There are eleven and twelve year old students who must not see their professors panicking.â Looking worried and being worried were two completely different things; their duty at the moment was to keep the students calm and the only way they could do that was if they looked calm as well. Honestly, the younger ones didnât need to know the professors were worried. âWe can still provide the information they need and help them if we appear calm.â
"Leave me behind."
"Leave me behind."
Why were all her students being so over-dramatic today? âI assume youâre speaking metaphorically, Miss Jordan,â she mused, looking over the essay. âI know you have a lot on your plate this year, but this is hardly that bad. Iâll assign some extra credit and youâll be on top of things again in no time.â
"Leave me behind."
"Leave me behind."
Eirian shook her head at the melodramatic words, trying to quell her smile. Sending the other students ahead with a wave, she carefully sat beside Rosmerta. âThe castle is right in front of you, and I have no doubt you can make the remaining distance. But Iâll sit with you for a little while, unless youâd rather be alone.â
"What is that girl up to?" [From Tilly]
"What is that girl up to?"
The words slipped before Eirian could stop them but she didnât really want to take them back either. Now that Tilly had joined the Hogwarts staff, it wasnât unusual to hear all sorts of strange noises echoing around the castle. Eirian thought it added to the charm, honestly, and she enjoyed hearing the music that drifted through the air. However, what she heard at this particular moment didnât even seem to count as music - a discordant sort of . . . jangling? Shaking her head, she paused at the corner before deciding it was the better idea just to continue on her way.Â

Honestly, considering all of the things that could happen tonight further than the attack, students up and leaving was the last of what Lennox knew anyone needed. Not only were they looking for Rosmerta Daniels, but now there was a group of vigilante students off to find her as well. He admired their reasons, however their choices were far from what was needed. They could get themselves killed. âTheyâve just gone? Oh Merlin, Merlin, Merlin.â
âThe situation is far from ideal but we mustnât let the other students think that weâre worrying, Lennox.â Eirian cast a quick look around them and sighed; they wouldnât be able to keep the rest of the student body quiet for long and she was already dreading the uproar.
