She’s thriving and I’m here with lore (Finally)
NEW-TOKYO, MOTHERBOARD CITY, UNIVERSE 2077
This universe is 42 years ahead of ours. Technology as we know it has evolved… but in exchange, our planet Earth has become uninhabitable, so humans now live underground in city-states divided by countries, some erased from the world map and others had to join the USA in order to survive. This happened with part of Japan-Tokyo and New York 20 years ago in 2057, giving rise to New-Tokyo, a central city seen as a digital utopia.
New Tokyo is a large city with a population of 5 million inhabitants, more than 80% of whom are not visible, because as I said, technology has evolved… now you can leave your human body behind and be part of the Digital Utopia, a place that resembles a server, the largest in history, and promises to transfer human consciousness to the digital world and live a perfect life. The government of this city-state is more focused on this civilization in the digital world than on Motherboard City located in the real world, leading to a large amount of crime in this city.
After all that, let’s get into my OC, Yunomii Hamada. Yuu was originally born on November 18, 2046, in Japan-Tokyo. Her mother (Masu Kubota) was a secretary for an advanced technology company, Z00N4M1 CORP., before meeting a man of higher rank, marrying, and having Yuu… unfortunately, Yuu was able to spend 11 years with her family before the catastrophe in 2057 happened. Her father disappeared in the accident while Yuu and her mother became migrants to the USA, where her mother started as a prostitute… she was “lucky” to convince someone to accept her as a cadet to become a police officer, wanting to do it for her daughter’s safety.
Year 2060, three years later… Masu turned out to be an excellent police officer, Yuu left behind any memory of her father or the disaster, now getting used to her life in the USA playing hockey, being an outstanding student, and having a partially normal life even if the accident had left her dependent on using a robotic leg for the rest of her life. Masu, although she had a relatively busy job, always tried to be present to raise her daughter and show her that our past does not define who you are or will be. Yuu always silently saw her mother as a role model and learned to be strategic, intelligent, and above all brave… although inside she was still afraid of what the future held for her.
Year 2061, Yuu had just turned 15 when she and her mother returned to the rebuilt Japan, now becoming the already known city-state, New-Tokyo or Motherboard City. We could say that the change from real life to the digital world was not easy… not because of the language or culture, but the social structure and like any teenager… appearance. Yuu was not very welcome at the school where she started studying, she suffered several abuses due to the lack of her leg and her appearance not meeting the strict Japanese beauty standards. Yuu felt worthless and like an abomination among everyone, she wanted to die… she quit hockey, but what pushed her to continue was the support of her mother, who always gave her the love that no one else did even if she came back with another bruise, another bump, and without her prosthetic leg.
Year 2061, it was a Saturday on a “rainy” night, Yuu thought it wasn’t worth calling it rain, it was just an irrigation system since they were always underground. She was in the room of the apartment where she lived with her mother, who was not at home due to work, Yuu had already finished her homework and household chores, so she went to sleep…
Something woke her up in the middle of the night, something on her face… something cold and with legs, A SPIDER. Before Yuu could react to get it off her, the spider bit her right on the face. Yunomii felt a searing pain, one she wouldn’t wish on her worst enemies to this day, her body was paralyzed and only her screams and sobs from the pain were loud enough for Masu to hear.
That night, neither of them slept… neither knew where that cyber spider had come from and the pain on Yuu’s face had been caused by a corrosive venom that melted half of her face and left one of her eyes completely blind… she was admitted to the hospital for a few days and came out with no desire to go to school at all… but she had to.
Although Yuu didn’t tell anyone what had happened during those days in the hospital, when her hands and feet stuck to the floor and walls… how a type of substance or webs came out of her wrists, how she was able to accidentally destroy walls or how she felt danger approaching her like a sixth sense, she didn’t understand what was happening to her, she felt rejection towards these powers until she went to school.
There was a force that had awakened within her, she could defend herself… she could be the defense in this hockey game once and for all. And she did… no one bothered her again, ever. Yuu was no longer the defenseless nerd, now she was just a nerd.
Among all this, Yuu thought about what to do with these powers… until she remembered her father, the little she remembered of him were his last words… “with great power comes great responsibility,” and yes, it sounded a bit silly to her at that moment… being a vigilante in a city where— well… there was no crime! So Yuu had a plan, an ingenious plan.
Year 2063, everything was… fine, Yuu considered being a vigilante easy even though the real world was full of crime… it was clever to accompany her mother to her work daily to see how she did it, with the excuse of also applying as a cadet later on… Yuu had another plan that her mother didn’t know about, but a secret like that wouldn’t hurt anyone if it stayed a secret… right? So there was Yuu, with a cheap suit and never-before-seen powers, jumping between the real and digital worlds saving the day, no one could stop her now that she was an adult (only legally, according to her mother… she was just as stubborn as her father).
Year 2064, Yuu doesn’t remember that year clearly… but I do haha— it had been a good half of the year, Yuu was now a very popular person with her alter-ego that the city affectionately named: “Cyber-Web,” Masu was now Captain Masu… and Yuu couldn’t feel prouder even though they fought all the time, about how Yuu no longer had as much interest as she used to in university and school and how Masu was never home anymore.
CANON EVENT, November 18, 2064.Yuu only expected two things, a normal patrol in Motherboard and getting home to read the “Happy Birthday” text from her mother with a $20 gift card in yen. The patrol was going well for the moment… until an earthquake hit Motherboard… they happened regularly, but not like this… it was a catastrophe… skyscrapers were falling from the sky along with the artificial panels that simulated a blue sky… there were screams, dead people… and Yuu was just trying to save them all as best she could, just like her mother.
And she thought of her mother the whole time, swinging between falling skyscrapers, she saw her… and only her. Masu jumped to push the little girl who was in the path of debris about to fall on her… Yuu tried to reach her, it was the fastest she had ever run in her life without a leg… and still, she couldn’t, she couldn’t prevent it… Masu sighed in relief after saving the girl, but didn’t see the building coming down on her when she took the girl’s place. And so, before Yunomii’s eyes, the only person who had loved her died, and she died without Yuu being able to apologize for all the stupid things they had fought about.
Yuu wondered if her mother would have understood if she had told her secret… if she would have been a criminal or her daughter, in front of Masu’s lifeless body crushed under the rubble… the worst part was that she could only take the badge and leave her behind, the world wouldn’t stop for a moment to mourn her mother and carry her in her arms or even give her one last hug… it was a somewhat bitter farewell, a bit more bitter than all the others.
Year 2066, Yuu had managed even if she was no longer there for her. She didn’t feel there was another alternative to live… she had thought about it, but something in her knew this wasn’t over, that Motherboard depended on her not to fall into dystopia. Get up, eat, bathe, save the day, and go to sleep… that was her routine until her flesh and bone body could no longer bear this weight that only someone inhuman could carry in their arms.
That only someone 𝘪𝘯𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯 could carry… those words kept spinning in Yunomii’s head… until she had another idea… an idea she didn’t know if it would work, but her life depended on it.
And so, Yunomii abandoned her body, her mind was stored in files, her flesh was replaced by metal and gears… and her heart by a vibranium core. Renouncing her mortal life to defend Motherboard with a new purpose… that in her mother’s name, she would bring peace to the city as she wanted, so that peace would be restored and it would be the true utopia she wanted to live in with her beloved daughter.
