I struggled with posting this, but life just really sucks more than usual right now. For anyone who follows me, I have been homeless since July and have been living in my car. Life has been very hard these past few months, and I have been trying so hard to pay some bills off before I can rent again. Winter is coming, and I am still very behind on my car note. I need to make a payment to avoid repossession in about two weeks. I am trying to raise this amount because my car is literally all I have. last post wasnt gonna go anywhere because of how old and how many notes it had so im remaking with the soul focus being on getting these two credit card bills taken care of. id especially like to get my care credit account paid off fully so i can request a credit increase because miss kitty needs dental surgery for a tooth extraction which will cost upwards of $2k based on the estimate. from what the vet told me her gums are growing over one of her teeth which is causing her pain so that’s my main priority

Basically. I got screwed.
I am very sorry for how relatively quiet this blog has been but I've been dealing with a very unpleasant situation the last few months, and now I need help.
Essentially, I tried to help someone out, and she took advantage of me, and I have no way to recoup my losses.
Earlier this year, I moved house. Before we sold the old house, a Now-Former friend ran into some trouble and was about to become homeless with pets and a small child. Not wanting them to be on the street, we offered to let her rent the old house at a severe discount to cover the cost of the two mortgages. No profit to us, just helping her out.
Instead, she:
Never Paid a Dime of Rent ($12,000 for the nine months she was there)
Trashed the house ($500 dump fees for the trash alone)
Let her pets piss and shit all over the house ($1,500 bio hazard cleanup, $4000 to replace the carpet and other damaged flooring)
Caused an electrical issue in the garage ($900 to repair)
Broke the washer, dryer and refrigerator ($2500 to replace)
Broke the FENCE ($1000 to repair)
Illegally squatted in the house for a solid three months and I had to hire a lawyer and actually take her to court to get her to leave ($2,500 because she dragged it out)
The resulting stress has been, as you can imagine, stressful. So stressful, in fact, that my Husband developed acute medical issues, had to go to the hospital, and take time off work to recover. Now the health insurance is trying to weasel out of paying his short-term disability claim.
So net, this woman has managed to cost me around $25,000 and that's not taking into account the missed paychecks and medical expenses. I do not have $25,000, and until at least $13,000 of that is spent to repair the damage she did, I cannot sell the house to even begin to recoup my losses.
Theoretically, I could sue this woman, but she doesn't have any money, or a job to garnish wages from, and it would be me paying even more money I don't have to get... Nothing.
I tried to help out a now-former friend by letting her rent my house at cost, and she instead failed to pay any rent, trashed my house, and

Fully blindsided right now & still processing the situation as I type this
My employer of 4 years, who has always been honest with me (sometimes to a concerning degree) has just let me know quite suddenly that she does not have the money to pay me for my last 2 weeks of work.

It's not totally out of the blue, I knew the company was struggling in an expand-or-die sort of way, but she's been reassuring me for months that she had investors lined up etc etc and that she'd let me know well ahead of time if I needed to start looking for another job.

Timesheets for the second half of September were due on the 1st-- mine totaled up to nearly full time at 19/hr. Typically payroll goes through within a couple of days or we at least hear an update. Crickets.
My internet bill was due yesterday; the charge hit my closed bank account and bounced. I was barely expecting to be able to cover my existing overdue and anticipated expenses with the paycheck i believed was coming. I reached out via text to ask for an update:
I have in fact been looking for another job-- at least on the side to make me feel more secure and allow me to live more comfortably-- but no one wants a gardener in the winter, or a gardener who can't drive, for that matter, and I hadn't begun to start looking for the sort of work from home admin job she had me doing.

She's been like a weird family member to me for ages now, and yet she let me do all that work the last couple weeks, knowing she couldn't pay me for it, without saying a damn word. I have emails from her asking for me to do more for her as recently as yesterday. No mention of oh btw it's gonna be volunteer labor for now. I'm feeling heartbroken and betrayed; she was one of the few 'adult' figures in my life I genuinely felt I could count on.

My roommate and I have just gona through a move and he has a dental surgery coming up. Additionally, our new housemate is a relative of ours who is fleeing an abusive relationship. We thought we wouldn't need more help when we got moved in, but we had to invest in a lot of necessities her ex took, and we need to pay the storage bill, get food for after his dental surgery, and take care of bills. I love first-person because it’s about what the narrator chooses to tell. What do they focus on? What do they leave out? What can you learn from reading between the lines? Are they lying to you? Are they lying to themself? It’s great for unreliable narrators and for epistolary storytelling! It’s intimate but there’s still a distance because you aren’t really seeing the narrator’s thoughts–you’re just seeing the story that they’ve constructed.
I love second-person because it’s a conversation. Does “you” mean a broad, indefinite “you”? Does “you” really mean “I” but with plausible deniability? Does “you” mean one specific person? Can they hear the narrator? Do they know the narrator? What is the relationship here? Who’s talking? Who’s listening?
I love third-person limited because it’s focused and intimate. What does the world look like from inside this character’s head? What are they seeing? What are they feeling? It doesn’t grant them the privacy that first-person does; the narrative isn’t something they’ve chosen, it’s invisible and inescapable. As a reader you’re not watching so much as astral projecting.
(I love singular point of view because of how much it leans into that limitation. You’re not getting the whole story; you’re not seeing anything unless this character sees it. How do you embrace that? What do you do with the gaps around the edges? How does that define–or warp–the events that they’re experiencing?
I love multiple points of view because of how it broadens your understanding of the story and the world. If two point-of-view characters react in opposite ways to the same thing, what does that tell you about them? About the world? How does it feel to spend time inside a character’s head and then see them from someone’s else’s point of view? How do all of these viewpoints work together?)
I love third-person omniscient because the narrative is a character. It’s great for stories that know they’re stories! It allows for a camaraderie between the narrator and the reader! It allows for wider and more cinematic descriptions because you’re not limited to what a specific person can see! It lets you look at the characters from outside while still giving you the option to delve into their heads because you have full control over what you’re focusing on!
And I love authors who can combine viewpoints in ways you wouldn’t think would work but manage to pull it off! Stories with multiple point-of-view characters where one is first-person and the others are third! Stories that combine first- and second-person! Stories where the omniscient narrator suddenly refers to themself in the first person! Stories where you realize halfway through that you were wrong about who was narrating it!
Isn’t it fantastic that there are so many different ways to tell stories!!!!
i'm founding a new school of media criticism which i've decided to call Bitism. the Bitist school of literary analysis asks a simple question: is this work committed to the bit?
you see, any work of fiction is either committed to the bit or it's not. the worst thing a piece of media can be is ashamed of its own premise, of the genre it in habits, of the tropes and aesthetics we expect from it. to be committed to the bit does not inherently make it good, but it makes it more worthy of respect than those which are not.
also, that's not to say that a story cannot parody or criticize the genre it inhabits or mimics. we can discuss the bit, we can deconstruct the bit, we can ask ourselves whether or not it's a good bit, but to commit to it first will strengthen these discussions, not detract from them. commitment to the bit is, after all, the first step to genuine sincerity. and sincerity will exalt and elevate parody such that it can stand on its own feet.
commitment to the bit turns melodrama into camp, elevates parody to biting commentary, and allows cringe to open up into a resonant, if unpolished, expression of true emotion.
fully expect bitism to take the literary world by storm sometime in the next few years.
I think the thing to understand about writing advice is that there are no guidelines that are one-size-fits-all. Advice that is really useful for one genre/style can be completely anathema to another. You have to consider what your goal is when you’re writing, and how much it aligns with the goal of the person who’s giving advice.
Like “don’t use excessively flowery description” is a great tip if you’re writing a suspenseful thriller, but not if you’re writing something contemplative and pastoral. The “don’t use adverbs” adage or that Chuck Palahniuk quote about not using verbs like think/know/understand but instead telling through action is useful for certain moods/styles, but sometimes you’re writing something where you don’t want the reader to have to be constantly aware of subtext and emotional undercurrents. I think the best way to develop your own style and voice is to always be open to advice, but know that you can pick and choose what to actually follow. If you hear a writing tip that’s very against what you generally do, it’s not really valuable to think “that sucks, it’s wrong.” Feel free to disregard it if you think it doesn’t fit the kind of work you want to create! Or, try it out for a minute as an exercise, stretch your writing muscles in a new way, and then decide “yeah that’ll never work for me, no thanks.”
I was talking to another writer friend recently, and they said something complementary about my work and my style, about how they might struggle to write in a similar way. And that was so funny to me, because that’s just how I write. It comes naturally to me to work in that style, while I would find the world building and complexity and high stakes of the fantasy writing that this friend had done very intimidating. That doesn’t mean that the stuff I write doesn’t take effort (I’ve spent over ten years writing in some capacity, studying in classes in high school and college, attending writer’s lectures, and reading and writing and critiquing and editing). But it’s the style that I’ve built by taking the advice that works for me, emulating the stories and writers that influence me.
To me, a piece of advice is always something to consider, to turn over in your mind, to evaluate for yourself. Being open to that advice from a wide range of authors and genres and styles can help you make something unique. But because writing is also a very personal, individual craft, a huge chunk of writing advice isn’t going to apply to you. And that’s fine! But it doesn’t mean it’s all bad advice.

My roomate and I are disabled and trans and next week we are moving to a place we will be living rent-to-own. This is great for us and will solve a lot of the issues we've been running into over and over, but it's also a lot quicker than we expected, and I expected to be making money from a job I oboarded for by now. Basically we need a lot of help fast to make this happen. We need first months rent there, last weeks here, and as little food as we can live off of + moving costs. I may figure out ways to cover some of this and will update if I do.
