How To Support Canadian Net Neutrality
Posted December 19th, 00:45 PST
If you are currently unfamiliar with the unexpected net neutrality battle, please refer to this post.
As a short summary, Bell Media, backed by Cineplex and Rogers Media, is attempting to take control of net neutrality in Canada by going directly to the CRTC (who regulates most Canadian media related leglislation).
This allows them to skip the regular court process that would normally open them to public disapproval and is a dangerous and underhanded move for all Canadians.
This guide will show you how to directly comment to the CRTC on the proposal put forward by Bell step by step. The comment process should take less than ten minutes and could make a huge difference on tomorrowās outcome.
The following is for Canadian citizens or permanent residents only. If you are neither please follow the above link where you can still make your voice heard by signing the active petition. Please also continue to circulate information including this post and the post linked above.
You can continue to do this until the hearing period is over, but comments submitted in the next few hours will also hold a lot of weight.
First open a new browser tab to this page: https://services.crtc.gc.ca/pub/CommentForm/Default-Defaut.aspx?lang=e&EN=2017-429&ET=N&S=O&PA=B&PT=A&PST=A&FN=
You will see a feedback form. Select all three applicants listed (Bell Media, Corus Entertainment, and Rogers Media).
Next, select your intervention type as opposition. You will also submit your comment here. If you donāt know what to write or donāt feel comfortable writing from scratch, you can use the following skeleton:
āMy name is [LEGAL NAME], and I am writing my intervention in opposition to this application.
The application will set a standard for media moderation without input from the majority of Canadian consumers. As a Canadian citizen, I do not believe this is in line with our right to freedom of speech and furthermore does not accurately represent the majority of consumers desires.
As a consumer I ask for this application to be denied, as it stands in opposition to the beliefs of the CRTC as well as the values we as a people hold for our freedom of information and speech.ā
I recommend changing the wording slightly if you are able. However even just a direct paste if you agree with the message still is a good contribution.
This next part is optional, but I would recommend selecting āI do not wish to appearā unless you are completely confident should you actually be asked to defend your message in person.
Unless for some reason you actually are a respondent or a designated representative (if you are one youāll know, donāt worry), skip these two. Agree to the confirmation of service, you wonāt be asked to provide evidence or proof as you are responding as a consumer not as a legal or commercial representative.
Finally, before completing make sure all necessary sections are properly filled out. Use your legal name and most professional email.
If you have any questions or if I missed something, please let me know.
hey american followers
canadians reblogged fcc & net neutrality stuff for you so you had access to information - can you lend a hand and help us now?
Context (please share this post!):
Bell, Cineplex, Rogers and Shaw are trying to censor the internet and force the end of net neutrality in Canada.
NDP MP, Don Davies has introduced a Private Members bill (December 13th, 2017) to combat high student debt.Ā
If passed theĀ Student Debt Relief Act would create a national student debt strategy with the objective to:
Reduce student debt interest rates toĀ āprime rateā (currently student debt faces a 3.86 to 4.66% rate, and the prime rate is 3.2%).
Introduce incentives to complete a degree, including loan forgiveness.
Establish awards for on-time payments of loans such as the possibility of interest rate reductions
Read the full bill here:
Want this to happen, Canadians? Contact your elected representatives and tell them to support this bill.
This bill only has a chance of passing if Liberals or Conservatives can be convinced to support it (as the NDP has a minority of seats and majority support is required to pass any law):

National police force expands sexual assault review to all cases since 2015 where no charges laid
The RCMP is set to dramatically expand its review of closed sexual assault cases.
The decision comes after an examination of 2,225 files from 2016 where Mountie investigators had concluded the complainantsā allegations were unfounded.
Having identified investigative, supervisory and knowledge gaps, the national police force has decided to re-examine every sexual assault case since 2015 where no charges were laid, no matter the reason.

Today marks the 26th anniversary of the Ćcole Polytechnique massacre, in Montreal, Canada. A cowardly, misogynic act which left 14 promising women dead, simply because they were women:
Twenty-five-year-old Marc LĆ©pine, armed with a Mini-14 rifle and a hunting knife, shot 28 people, killing 14 women, before committing suicide. He began his attack by entering a classroom at the university, where he separated the male and female students. After claiming that he was āfighting feminismā and calling the women āa bunch of feminists,ā he shot all nine women in the room, killing six. He then moved through corridors, the cafeteria, and another classroom, specifically targeting women to shoot. Overall, he killed fourteen women and injured ten other women and four men in just under 20 minutes before turning the gun on himself.[1][2] His suicide note claimed political motives and blamed feminists for ruining his life. The note included a list of 19 Quebec women whom LĆ©pine considered to be feminists and apparently wished to kill.[3]
After thisĀ despicable act, Canada adopted gun control measures. Since gun control measures were adopted there has not been another mass shooting killing more than 10 people in Canada. SinceĀ Ćcole Polytechnique there has only been 9 massacres in Canada; 9 in 26 years.
Please remember these women.

Documents obtained by CANADALAND reveal a plan to create a not-for-profit corporation responsible for maintaining a blacklist of alleged pirate sites.
Canadaās biggest media companies appear to want to put an end to net neutrality, in the name of blocking piracy.
According to a draft proposal to the CRTC obtained by CANADALAND, Bell is leading a coalition of companies that intends to push the telecom regulator to create a not-for-profit corporation that would maintain a list of websites it had determined were peddling pirated materials, and force all internet service providers in the country to block access to them. The proposal closely follows testimony Bell made this fall before a House of Commons committee.
The new corporation would be called the āInternet Piracy Review Agencyā (IPRA).
The coalition includes broadcasters, movie studios, and cinema operators from across Canada. After Bell, some of the biggest names include Rogers, Cineplex, and Quebec theatre chain CinƩmas Guzzo, according to emails obtained by CANADALAND. A complete list of companies supporting the plan has not yet been finalized. The coalition expects to file its application to the CRTC on December 19, the emails say.

The country added a stunning 80,000 jobs at a time when the economy was supposed to be slowing.
Canadaās red-hot job market smashed all expectations in November, adding 79,500 jobs at a time when the experts predicted the economy would be slowing.
Canadaās unemployment rate dropped right through the 6-per-cent level, registering 5.9 per cent, down from 6.3 per cent the month before. Itās the lowest since February, 2008, Statistics Canada said Friday morning.
The consensus among economists had been for an increase of 10,000 jobs in November, and for the unemployment rate to reach 6.2 per cent.

How will the US net neutrality vote affect Canadians?
Greatly.
Since the majority of large websites are based in the USA, what the USA does in regards to net neutrally will effect every person that uses the Internet.
This is an old article but its on this topic:
Net neutrality changes in U.S. could impact Canada
āWe may not live in the U.S., but many of our favourite websites do,ā he said. āCanadians rely on a lot of American services⦠to go about their daily lives.
āIf a proposal were to go through that would allow slow lanes on the internet, that could impact how those services operate and what new services are able to emerge.ā

In August, Eskimos president and chief executive officer Len Rhodes said the club was consulting with Indigenous leaders, but had no plans to change the Eskimos name, despite critics who say it is an antiquated term for people of Inuit heritage which many consider derogatory.
If the Edmonton Eskimos donāt rename the team before next season, the 2018 Grey Cup could be ābeset by a very chargedā debate about the issue, warns Mayor Don Iveson.
āThis conversation is not going to go away,ā Iveson said in an interview with CBC Radioās Edmonton AM on Thursday.
āWith the Grey Cup coming here next fall, itās going to be difficult to imagine that conversation not coming back in an even more significant way over the next year.
"I worry that what would otherwise be a very positive Grey Cup could be beset by a very charged conversation around the team name.ā

Our very governments, along with ignorance of the populous. And itās not just food either, many Native Americans lack access to what many non-natives consider basic amenities: Feminine hygiene products (1) , electricity (3), clean water and plumbing (4,5) , basic healthcare (2), to which even then many Natives are treated poorly or even denied treatment on the few hospitals nearby (6) 1: https://www.google.com/amp/m.huffpost.com/us/entry/us_597216dde4b09e5f6cceddfb/amp 2: http://www.nbcnews.com/id/31210909/ns/health-health_care/t/broken-promises-reservations-lack-basic-care/ 3: https://indiancountrymedianetwork.com/news/native-news/not-alone-in-the-dark-navajo-nations-lack-of-electricity-problem/ 4: https://mobile.nytimes.com/2016/10/20/opinion/for-these-americans-clean-water-is-a-luxury.html 5: http://www.upworthy.com/some-native-american-reservations-have-no-access-to-basics-like-water-why-look-to-1948 6: http://sugarmoonaki.tumblr.com/post/165473548548/a-little-native-girl-passed-away-in-her-sleep-last#notes (courtesy of @sugarmoonaki )
