I can't be the only person who genuinely STRUGGLED to imagine Kaz "grinning like an idiot"
Kaz Brekker's lip twitches Kaz Brekker smirks Kaz Brekker half smiles
Sure. But my brain refuses to picture him grinning

I’ve finally accepted that my Grishaverse phase will never end and will simply stay buried inside me forever, ready to emerge at any mention of crows
Completely outlandish and unserious Grishaverse theory: Baghra is Kaz Brekker's mother! (I know, I know, just let me explain)
Both have a disposition for hitting people with canes
Both spend their time glaring at people
Both are always grumpy
Both have a past that they try to hide due to a specific family member
Maybe the reason Kaz is so good at small magic tricks/making things disappear is because he has a little bit of magic that he is able to use to destroy/move/erase things
So either Baghra is secretly Kaz's mother or Leigh just accidently gave them a few similar qualities while writing (It's the latter option😔)
Wylan: And Kaz will be my father.
Kaz: I don't want to be your father.
Wylan, tearing up: Just like the real thing!
Jesper: In that case, I want Matthias to play my mother.

Nina:

Matthias' ghost:
Jesper: Just like the real thing! *starts crying*
making fan edits for the first time
ofc i had to start with my queen inej
the discourse about the ages being removed from six of crows is about to drive me up a wall
cause i've seen a lot of people saying it's a good thing bc "their ages never made sense, they were too mature and doing things teenagers couldn't/wouldn't do"
and man, it's almost like that's the fucking point??? it's almost like soc is a series about a group of deeply traumatized kids who have gone through things no one their age should have to and have been forced to mature way faster than they should have as a result of their circumstances.
"oh but there's no way kaz could command that kind of respect and fear as a 17-year-old" bro he's fucking unhinged. people have tried to underestimate him bc of his age. he made them regret it.
"oh but thinking about inej being a sex slave at such a young age makes me feel icky :/" IT'S SUPPOSED TO. her backstory is not supposed to make you feel good or be comfortable to read about.
and that's not even getting into all the times in the series the crows do, in fact, act like teenagers despite their circumstances. like the way they acted around colm?? kaz and jesper getting into that petty fight and then instantly backing down like kicked puppies when colm scolded them? c'mon.
i just think that saying the crows' ages don't make sense is missing a lot of what six of crows is about.
do you guys think the louvre robbers said "no mourners no funerals" while putting on their construction outfits
Wylan/Kaz interactions where Wylan gets his way, my beloved.
I js saw someone headcanon that the louvre heist was acc planned by jesper to prove to kaz that he could pull it off and it just- feels right? Like i can imagine it.
Kaz: What do you have that makes you think you can pull this off
Jesper: ADHD, bisexuality, a gun, a gambling addiction and a dream. Also a bet worth 50 kruge
the six of crows rewrites are bad for many reasons, but let's take a moment to especially mourn Matthias, the oldest at 18, looking at all the others like "djell, they're so young"
Ngl the changes to the 10th anniversary editions of SOC make me weary of the novella.
the removal of all mentions of the crows ages from the dregs editions is genuinely one of the worst choices leigh bardugo has ever made. the youth of every character is so crucial to their stories.
kaz is not an angry adult man who can’t let go of a grudge, he’s a teenager who lost his brother only a few years ago who’s still grieving, but is still naive enough to believe that fathers must love their sons.
inej is not a strong adult woman, she is a child still, forced to grow up too fast and fend for herself. her optimism despite the shitty hand fate dealt her has so much to do with her youth.
jesper is not an adult man who can’t control himself. he is young and reckless and grieving his mother and suppressing one of the most important parts of himself.
wylan isn’t a grown man too sheltered to leave his fathers house despite being well past the age he should’ve left by. he was sixteen when his father tried to kill him the first time, young and still hopeful that his father must love him enough to send him to school to make music, the one thing he truly loves.
and nina and matthias were carefully groomed by their countries to maintain their biases from a young age, but they are still young enough to change.
and kuwei?? a literal child being held captive by the fjerdan government for the actions of his father, frightened and too intelligent.
it infuriates me to strip these characters of their youth when their age is so tightly woven into their personalities and character arcs.
most of what CAN be said about the six of crows changes has been said, but i gotta say i’m so annoyed with all the “their ages were unrealistic anyway” like actually child soldiers and trafficked children do exist. they exist now and they ESPECIALLY existed in the vague fantasy 1850s, sorry
The louvre heist was just a distraction so Kaz could steal what he actually wanted: The moon
As a youth librarian seeing in real time the adultification of YA and how so much is now written for an assumed adult audience, it's actually so appalling to see the Six of Crows edits.
Taking the teen out of one of the best and most recommended teen series is such a gross edit, and to see people say "it's fine because I age them up when I read it anyway" tomato tomato tomato
i think that, to me, the worst thing about the dregs editions being edited might be how that changes jesper’s story.
he’s not a reckless teenager who’s grieving his mother and coping with that and a million other things in an unhealthy way.
now, he can easily be painted as a grown man of color who simply can’t handle himself.
who hands over property to his white father because he’s just not quite mature [pt: mature /end pt] enough.
obviously, even though he’s an adult character in these editions, there’s much more nuance to this. but this makes it so [pt: so /end pt] much easier to ignore that and to picture him as stupid and immature
imagine you’re trying to investigate some big mystery about an island massacre and the documents you uncover are just incessant flirting between ketterdam’s mob boss and the captain of the wraith
