“So I shouldn’t ask what you’re thinking about? Okay,” James drummed his fingers on the table, trying to think of anything else to say. “I’ve been grading exams all day, I can tell you about all the ridiculous things kids write that makes absolutely no sense. I swear, all this technology lowers their IQ significantly.”
Kate made a face at the male before running a hand through her hair, eventually ALLOWING her body to relax and recline in the seat she had occupied for the last twenty minutes or so. “--- NO ONE loves math quite like you, Jamie,” she wrinkled her nose. “The technology should actually make it easier to know this kind of stuff, but you know... generation of LAZY THINKERS and what not. That’s what pops used to call us.”
“Not thinking about it, not thinking about it, not thinking about it,” Kate mumbled more to herself as she lowered her travel mug of coffee away from her lips. “Okay, I’m DEFINITELY thinking about it now. Quick, DISTRACT me!”
kendallholloway:
“House Holloway here to dominate another family cookout.” Carrying a cooler in each hand, she skipped merrily to their spot in the line up of barques. “Be ready, burgers are coming.”
Kate had left the festivities an HOUR EARLY to prepare for the cook out. The event was supposed to be fun, but with Kate it was always going to be stressful. The Holloways had a tradition of winning the BEST BURGERS award and, somewhere along the line, the eldest of the four had interpreted that as failure is not an option thing. This year was no different. “Thank God, Kenny. I thought you had gotten LOST or something on your way back. Is everything there?”
witchnora:
“okay. dancing and sparklers and all are nice but when do we get to the actual MOST IMPORTANT part?? seriously, i’m living for the BURGER COOK-OFF right now.”
“oh god, DON’T remind me,” kate made a face as she picked at her remaining candy floss. it had been tradition for the holloways to enter and, no matter how many times kate was involved, she still found herself STRESSING over something that was supposed to be fun. “it shouldn’t be too long now, though.”
huntermonroe:
“I’ve been asked to take off my shirt TWELVE times today. TWELVE TIMES. I counted. — is it prostitution if I request a payment the next time?”
“MAYBE A LITTLE,” Kate held up a thumb and forefinger to demonstrate her words. “It probably does fall under some sub-genre of PROSTITUTION, but who does it really harm? People get what they want and your pockets get fatter. Win-win, right?”
After spending the last two days creating enough food to last the ENTIRE WEEKEND, Kate was now able to relax and enjoy the event. Weaving in and out of the crowd while the parade was in full swing, a grin appeared on her lips as she came across her close friend. “Elisa, thank God you’re here!” she chuckled. “I’ve had to fend off at least FIVE people trying to put these on my head,” she pointed to the rainbow headgear that sat lopsided atop of her hair. “Please RESCUE me.”

johannawalkley:
“— well, that’s CONVENIENT,” Johanna commented, raising a brow as the woman went on. “Let me get this straight, you want me to sit down with you and taste every single sample meal in the menu? COUNT ME IN.”
Kate lets the comment slide by with a simple shrug of her shoulders. She didn't entirely mind that an old friend got back into contact with her, but she was kind of bummed by the fact that it was for this and not for actual REUNION reasons. “Absolutely. You’re a LIFE SAVER, truly.”
ofthecurrent:
“That’s really beautiful. I’ll tell him that, he’ll love it,” Sierra said, looking at the girl with wide eyes. “I never saw it like that, I just didn’t want to throw away a gift someone gave me. Thank you for saying that, though. No one’s ever said something so nice to me before.”
“I guess you just haven't been talking to the RIGHT kind of people,” Kate shrugged. “It's just something that I kind of grew up believing in, it took me a while to get used to the fact that not everyone SHARED THAT BELIEF. It sucks, but it's something that you can turn to your advantage. People rarely reach out, so you do it instead. Someone has to. It's nice to know that there's someone out there that will. It’s as close to REAL MAGIC as one can get.”
kitholloway:
Kit shook his head in amusement with his sister, sometimes he forgot how seriously she took what people said to her, even when it was friendly teasing or said rhetorically. “What’s important is that you believe that they exist.” Kit said pointedly, nudging her shoulder playfully with a grin. “There’s a healthy amount of worrying,” He told her, “And then there’s Kate Holloway level of worrying.” He considered her words for a moment, he wasn’t an expert on what was and what wasn’t acceptable food to be served at a wedding. Kit considered himself a foodie, he would be happy with anything Kate served at his wedding, but he knew not every bride and groom would be as relaxed as he would be. “What kind of people are they? Are they chicken stuffed with cheese and white sauce kind of people or are they fancy cheese board kind of people?”
“You’re such an ASS, Kit,” Kate swatted at his arm in response to his nudge. She wasn’t the most sociable one when it came to the Holloway siblings, but the eldest did like to think that she was doing okay when it boiled down to facts. “I'll have you know that the Kate Holloway level of worrying is PERFECTLY NORMAL, thank you very much.” Despite her words, the restaurant owner knew deep down that her one and only brother had a point. If there was something to worry about it was a safe bet to assume that Kate was dedicating her ENTIRE DAY thinking it over. “As far as I can remember, she was mostly in the middle of those two options. She always seemed to hang out with the fancy smoothie drinkers, but you'd still catch her in McDonald's on a Friday night after a few drinks -- but now? Honestly, I have NO IDEA what she'd be into now. Apparently she's marrying a lawyer, though. -- Maybe we should compile a list of options that can cater to both types?”
veryfaeriefreddi:
“I think that could be true about almost everyone.” she chuckled “You’re very welcome!“ she cheered.
“I guess that’s true,” Kate nodded as she extended a hand, offering the EMPTY SEAT to the blonde. “I would like to say I’m PRODUCTIVE when my phone dies, but I end up just finding something else to distract myself with.”
httpwalt:
“Yeah of course, free food is one of my main weaknesses in life.” Walt sat next to Kate and clapped before rubbing his hands together excitedly “What’s first?”
“Fantastic,” Kate grinned as she turned the laptop so he could see the EXTENSIVE list of meal options that she had already prepared not that long ago. It was the narrowing down that she was having the issues with. “I think we can start by NARROWING DOWN what I have here, and then from there we pick six to try out in the kitchen.”
I am hopelessly in love with a memory. An echo from another time, another place.
