Non-tragic D&D backstory

Tragic D&D back story are becoming sort of a cliche. It is always, “my family was killed by orcs” or “My village was destroyed in a drow raid”, no one ever had a decent life. So, I decided to change it up for my latest character.

Felix is taking a gap year from the Scarlet Citadel to go adventuring. He thinks it will be better to take time off and get real world experience so he can get a better job after graduation. Currently, he is majoring in evocation with a minor in transmutation magic. He won’t take any necromancy spells because his uncle (mom’s brother) became a necromancer, and later a lich and it broke the family’s heart.

Because he is trying to get experience during this gap year, he takes detailed notes on his adventures. After every combat, he takes an accounting of his role. “I killed that goblin with firebolt, but Ragnor, while you delivered the killing blow on that one other there, would you consider my firebolt on him helped or not? Yes? Okay, that is one kill and one assist, please sign here as a witness.”

Currently, he goes by Felix the adequate, which he assures everyone that it is the title he has earned so far and the suffx “the great” is earned and not just given. It is, of course, better than his brother Jakob the disappointment, who spends all his time smoking green leaf with the druids. When he levels up, he will be Felix the Seemly, and only gets better from there.

His father is the headmaster of the citadel and Felix hopes to make him proud. His mother casts sending everyday to check in on him, or to tell him that she is about to be scrying on him so he can tell her about his day or to make sure he is eating.

Felix is a well adjusted young elven mage with a loving, supportive, and most importantly LIVING, family. After he adventures for a while, he will go back and finish his studies at the citadel and maybe take a professor role where his experience and benefit his students.

The reason that blackness almost acts as a sexuality is because antiblackness is something that is so innate in the minds of nonblack people when growing up, that them preferring not to date someone who is black is almost as normal as them preferring not to date someone who isn’t their preferred sex.

Did y’all follow that? Like, let me give you an example. Like, a straight white male saying that they don’t date black girls is just as normal in society as a straight white male saying that they don’t date boys. And straight white women saying that they don’t date black boys was almost as normal as them saying they don’t date women. And granted, that example might not be as prevalent as the last one, but still.

And I know in both of those examples, they were white, but it applies with nonblack POC too. And to add a little bit of intersectionality, let’s be honest, it probably applies to some black men, too. And that’s a shame, that we would treat our own women similarly to that of a sex we don’t prefer.

Oh, I just thought of something! Antiblackness is something that is so innate in the minds of nonblack people that they would almost have to come out! Come out! And say that they like black people. It’s like homophobia was so innate that you would have to come out and say you’re homosexual.

EVERY single one of my relationships, once we get to meeting the parents? I have to ask them three questions:

Do they know you're gay/bi/pan/whatever?

Do they know I'm transgender?

Do they know I'm black?

Sometimes I've gotten "I don't see how that could be an issue" for the last one and I tell him I don't care, warn them in advance that I am black. You know most of them have reported back to me "they were really surprised, I don't understand, it's more surprising to them that I'm dating someone black than someone gay and transgender?"

I've been through this song and dance with friends already, friends who neglected to mention to their parents that I'm black prior to me coming over and whose parents had less than fantastic reactions to seeing their kid playing with a little black kid in their yard. I'm not doing a surprise round with a partner I'm trying to determine if I want to spend the rest of my life as part of that family. My sister still has not met her white husband's family because she insisted on the same prior warning before walking into that house, and a good thing too because his parents basically disowned him for even considering marrying a black girl. They've been married more than a decade! They have children together! They're straight! And he had to 'come out' to his parents and get kicked out of his family for his attraction to a black woman.

It is one of the major reasons I stopped actively pursuing relationships with people who are white.

Interracial marriage was legalized when my parents were teenagers. My parents grew up not knowing they would enter an interracial marriage, not thinking it would be possible. It remains a major factor in why my parents hesitated for YEARS to get married, thinking the ruling would be overturned and they would have to end their marriage and not wanting to do that to their future children. Or that they would have to constantly uproot their kids and move around the country to stay safe. I remember growing up repeatedly having to explain how I could be black even though my mom is white [passing], because everyone jumped to 'adoption' and not 'her husband is fucking black'

My parents lived in Texas but got married in New Mexico because the Loving Decision made it legal for mixed race couples to BE married, but didn’t give the right to GET married. So, in Texas, interracial marriages were legal, weddings weren’t. This is in living memory.

I mean I hate to be the one to break this to you, but everything in space, including the sun, is moving through space. Very quickly, actually. The earth orbits the sun at 64,000 miles per hour, sun orbits the center of the Milky Way galaxy at 500,000 miles per hour, and the Milky Way galaxy itself is moving through space at roughly 1.3 million miles per hour.

Well since it’s now tomorrow I might as well answer your question about where the Milky Way is going. Really, there’s two different answers, a short and a long answer. The first, and shorter explanation, is that the Milky Way is heading towards our nearest galactic neighbor, the andromeda galaxy, and the two galaxies will collide within the next couple billion years. The second and much longer answer is that the Milky Way is apart of what’s called a “cluster” of galaxies. Basically, all the galaxies that are near ours. And this cluster is part of an even bigger cluster, called a “supercluster”. Superclusters are some of the largest structures in the universe, they stretch for hundreds of millions of light years and encompass hundreds of thousands of different galaxies. Our galaxy is slowly orbiting the general center of what’s called the Virgo supercluster, guided along by the gravitational pull of the galaxies around us and the structure of the universe itself.

Has anyone else noticed how, when you have a chronic condition of some kind, that there’s always the basic assumption from people around you that you’re not already doing everything you can?

It’s all about the illusion of control. People who are healthy like to believe they can always keep being healthy if they do the right things. They don’t want to think about how good people get struck with terrible circumstances for no reason. So they keep assuming that if they got sick, they could do something to make it better. And if you’re still sick, that must mean you’ve done something wrong or not done enough.
