Truegreen7 Contest Entries
A couple of month ago, I entered a contest held by Truegreen7to design volutions for 2 different Pokémon of his. These were my entries!
The First one of them here is Odonterror!
This one actually got 27th place on the contest! Ron said I could have made the tail more fantastical and, looking back, yeah I can see that. I guess I was just really afraid of overcomplicating it.
I actually got the thresher spark inspiratin right for it! Though the first thing I thought of when I saw the original Bluffin design was a false cleanerfish. They don't look much alike but I got reminded of it mostly because of its whole concept (a dangerous fish that pretends to be another)
Since the fish the false cleanerfish pretends to be usually cleans other fish's teeth, I decded to mix in the evil dentist trope. The drilll nose, glove hands, "glasses" and "buttons" on the fake fish head and face mask mouths all came from there.
Also for fun, here are some imagesI had conceptualizing Odonterror.
I didn't know what its pre-evo was precisely based on so I just named it Toothpyke (toothpick + pike) since it worked with Odonterror's name (odontology + terror).
The other one is Hazpurt!
This one didn't make it to top 50 and I can definitely see why. Admittedly it was pretty rushed and I would tweak the proportions a bit. Overall though, I still like it. Big fan of the palette I used.
I actually got a gut instinct telling me the original design (Numblanc) was some sort of marsupial. I looked it up and it turns out I was right! It's based on a numbat (also known as walpurti), a small marsupial that eats bugs.
The numbat also has some scent glands that allow it to mark its territory. This capacity of releasing substances coupled with the insectivore diet gave me the idea to mix in elements of a pest exterminator.
Adding a bit of plague doctor in it felt fitting too since the numbat has a long snout.
Unfortunately, I didn't have much time to conecptualize this one so I don't have images like the ones I had for Odonterror.
Since the names weren't revealed when the designs were released to the public, I nicknamed the unevolved form "Pawpurt" (paw + walpurt) since it had large front paws. Also, Hazpurt's name comes from "hazmat", "walpurti" and "spurt".
Well, this was a fun experience for sure. I think biggest takeaway from all of this is that I could definitely try to play a bit wilder with Pokémon designs (and maybe just design more Pokémon in general lol).
