There is hope! All over the world, people are speaking up and stepping up to protect the worldâs future.
Climate change and global warming are the biggest issues in our lifetimes. Sadly, most people do not realize the severity of these issues. Even if they do, I have found that many people believe that they have very little impact on reducing their carbon footprint (how much carbon their behaviors and habits release). Here are some simple ways to reduce your impact on the environment.
I spent much of my childhood exploring Devilâs Lake and Pewitâs Nest State Natural Area. Sadly, because of increased visitors and water pollution, these fragile areas are now in danger.
Water pollution is a major problem in the United States. Fertilizer runoff from farms and lawns cause massive algae blooms, killing life in the water and making the water toxic. Trash and pollutants harm the wildlife of our aquatic ecosystems. Let us take these steps to reduce the damage to our water.
A quick overview of what I will begin next year. I will be a fisheries, wildlife, and conservation ecology major at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. My career goal is to become a conservation ecologist and protect the wild in our hearts as well as the wild of the world.
The beauty of the world lies in the beauty of life that is different from our own. Let us see the world as more than one neighborhood of humanity, but rather as many neighborhoods of diversity including animals, plants, and humans,
Humans have this belief that all other life is meant to serve human kind. No life form is meant to serve another. We are all one community, and we should treat the Earth as such. Making it impossible for one species to serve will prove detrimental for all of us.
Land Ethic
This scares me. What is my future, our future, the worldâs future going to be like if humanity keeps this up? The time to act is now.
In 1620, the first Europeans arrived on the Eastern shores of North America to colonize a new home. The issue with colonization is that you can not colonize a land that is already inhabited by people. That being said, in 1620, a genocide began. For four centuries, white people have oppressed the native people of North America and forced them to relocate onto minuscule pieces of land. Bears Ears in Utah is one of the last remaining areas where Native American culture and sacred grounds have not been destroyed. Sadly, this may not be true for long. Before Barack Obama left office, he designated Bears Ears as a National Monument, temporarily protecting it from being sold and developed. President Trump now aims to sell off much of this protected area to private industries such as oil and ore mining. Bears Ears is a sacred place to the Native American people, and it deserves to stay that way. Untouched and wild. One of Trumpâs arguments is that Bears Ears and other grand natural areas serve no purpose to taxpayers. Yes, billions of dollars are not being made from these areas, but that does not diminish their significance. Bears Ears is a mecca of rock climbing, mountain biking, backpacking, and love for the outdoors. Let us protect it and keep it as such. There is beauty in the wild and things which do not need to be assigned a monetary value to be of significance. Protect Bears Ears National Monument.
Washington Post
Donald Trump plans to slash the Environmental Protection Agency's already paltry budget (compared to those of the military, CIA, FBI, Homeland Security, etc.). He has put Scott Pruitt in charge of the EPA, a man who does not believe in Climate Change and has refused to answer questions regarding public lands and selling them to oil and mining companies. This is the man who is supposed to head the Environmental Protection Agency, but who's point of view is the exact opposite. To the Trump administration, I ask, âplease get your head out of the (polluted and toxic) dirt and protect Americaâs nature.â
Madison, and the area around it, are part of the Sugar River Watershed. A watershed is a geographic area where water flows to one point. This being said, the Sugar River Watershed is one of the largest and most populated in the state. To maintain clean drinking water and healthy waterways, perhaps the people of Madison should look to Baltimore for inspiration.
Trump does not care about our environment. He has every intention to take what oil and money he can get from it, no matter the damage caused.
