"the rap frederick douglass" takes us on a semi-psychedelic trip through civil rights footage (official video of "ring bellz" courtesy of vitamin e films).
it's clear why cyhi da prynce has recently signed to kanye's label, G.O.O.D. music. the man has been putting in work the past couple of years, dropping 4 mixtapes (royal flush being his latest), balling out on the touring circuit, blowing up the bet hip hop awards cypher (cyhi comes in at the 2 min 30 sec spot), all while continuing collaborations with fellow indie hip-hop heads like alabama's yelawolf and the mad violinist (clip 1 / clip 2). in addition to being in the xxl 2011 up-and-coming freshmen class, cyhi also has an upcoming mixtape coming out (anytime now) in which he mixes with j cole, yela and big sean. (this will aptly be named "allies").
cyhi shared the stage with yelawolf at bottletree in birmingham, alabama last wednesday, and they both showed they have the goods for a strong club circuit. yelawolf (born michael wayne atha, gadsden, alabama) lived up to all the hype (and proved why he was recently signed by eminem--good move for slim to nab catfish billy for shady 2.0). yes, he does have some laughable ghet-o-vision videos and just plain corny tracks off of trunk muzik, but all is dismissed when you see his live show. it's all energy with the one man wolf pack, as he delivers his southern flows with utmost fervency (see his own bet cypher performance with raekwon, wiz khalifa, and bones brigante). although the kid has been in the game for several years pumping out quality bama mixtapes, yela's expanding connect has given him increased exposure (he's made cuts with folks like big boi, gucci mane, raekwon, paul wall, slim thug and juelz santana). he's also been getting substantial press coverage lately with cover spots in the fader and xxl (story 1 / story 2). since both yela and cyhi have new deals, it was a celebration party of sorts, with both rappers doing what they do best - hitting the mic hard and pushing each other to elevate their game.

caleb chancey, under the moniker WAR JACKET, is releasing leaflet no. 1, an ep of four lovely demos in march (listen now!). he ain't too shabby behind the lens either.
he will be playing at the red cat in bham, al on march 26.

if nothing else, the grammys do supply performances. go check out cee-lo's silliness and a bevy of over-the-top medleys over at consequence of sound.
arcade fire took home album of the year then seemingly hijacked the stage for an encore. props to the black keys, danger mouse and the white stripes (posthumously) taking home some hardware as well.
THE soft bulletin shows + limited vinyl
the flaming lips announce tour and an extremely limited vinyl collection. HEADY NUGGS: the first 5 warner bros. records 1992-2002 is an extremely limited vinyl collection, set for release on record store day and will be comprised of hit to death in the future head (1992), transmissions from the satellite heart (1993), clouds taste metallic (1995), the soft bulletin (1999), and the grammy-award winning, yoshimi battles the pink robots (2002).
there will be two different editions of the vinyl box sets. the "standard" record store day edition will be pressed on black vinyl, while the "special limited edition" will be pressed on 5 different colored vinyls, and will only be available through the band's official web store.
AND, the flaming lips are on tour, performing the soft bulletin in its entirety at some locations:

oxford american's ABALABIP!
oxford american's most recent issue was its 12th annual southern music issue, with the focus on music from alabama. treat yourself and go pick one up.
the good folks are also doing a series of concerts further spotlighting bama artists, and the party will start at the ABALABIP! kickoff concert this weekend at the beautiful alabama theatre in birmingham, alabama. musicians featured in the issue will be performing (ralph "soul" jackson, mary gresham, and the sex clark five), as well as the secret sisters and arthur doyle. if that ain't enough, you also get free entry to the after-party show at the bottletree, which is featuring rising hip-hop heads g-side, the green seed and dj rashido.
