How a Blobfish Looks with and without Extreme Water Pressure. Learn more đđœđđœ
Blobfish live in water pressures 60-120 times greater than at sea level. They lack both bones and teeth and have a very low muscle mass. This means that they do not actively hunt and instead, they drift along the seafloor, picking up mostly small creatures like crabs and shellfish.Â
Interestingly, they do not possess a swim bladder - air sacs that allows fish to maneuver accurately in the water - and instead, they rely on their very gelatinous flesh (at a similar density to the surrounding water) to keep them at the correct depth.
Although Blobfish as a whole are a mystery to scientists, it is known that during breeding the females lay thousands of eggs (up to 108,000) and that they have complex nesting behaviors. For example, both the female and male will ânestâ on the eggs, lying on top of them for protection. Not only that, the fish have been know to clean the eggs, removing dirt and other imperfections. Considering there is a very large necessity to conserve energy for all deep-water species, and given that Blobfish do not actively hunt, flee (or more broadly, move with purpose) it is odd that they show such extravagant breeding practices.
Blobfish are considered endangered. They do not have predators and do not generally have an instinct to flee so as a result, they are often pulled up by ocean floor trawlers, dying in the process.Â

Two young men were found dead inside torched cars. Three others died of apparent suicides. Another collapsed on a bus, his death ruled an overdose.
Six deaths, all involving men with connections to protests in Ferguson, Missouri, drew attention on social media and speculation in the activist community that something sinister was at play.
Police say there is no evidence the deaths have anything to do with the protests stemming from a white police officerâs fatal shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown, and that only two were homicides with no known link to the protests.
But some activists say their concerns about a possible connection arise out of a culture of fear that persists in Ferguson 4 œ years after Brownâs death, citing threats â mostly anonymous â that protest leaders continue to receive.
The Rev. Darryl Gray said he found a box inside his car. When the bomb squad arrived, no explosives were found but a 6-foot (1.8-meter) python was inside.
âEverybody is on pins and needles,â Gray said of his fellow activists.

This is an amazing deep dive into a fantastic conspiracy theory.Â

Women weren't excluded from early science fiction: they were erased
Science fiction scholar Lisa Yaszekâs recent book The Future Is Female! 25 Classic Science Fiction Stories by Women, from Pulp Pioneers to Ursula K. Le Guin, is a secret history of women in science fiction, reframing the story of exclusion (âwomen werenât welcome in early sf writing circlesâ) as one of erasure (âwomen made vital contributions to early science fiction, and these were systematically expunged from the record when the first wave of historical sf anthologies were published, as part of a backlash against first-wave feminismâ).
Yaszekâs work is very personal to me, dealing extensively with Judith Merrill, the great feminist sf writer, editor and critic, who was my mentor growing up in Toronto.
In a new interview with the Geekâs Guide to the Galaxy podcast (MP3), Yaszek elaborates on her work and its ramifications for how we think about the story of the future.
