Now that I am consistently active again, I've decided to redo my blog since the old intro post is from *checks watch* four years ago.
About
☆ Carter (she/him), early 20s, Black lesbian
☆ I love horror (especially gothic and religious), tragedies, characters with a miserable existence, complex (and codependent) character relationships, cannibalism metaphors, vampires, unreliable narrators, and em dashes
☆ Also, I post regular updates about books I'm reading and give recommendations, which you can find under #carter reads. I mostly read horror but I sometimes deviate from that with non-horror related queer stories and books about the environment/nature (I'm an environmental scientist; I don't post about these ones but feel free to ask me if interested). And feel free to send me your own books recs too!
☆ I follow from @phantomfemmes, my main blog where I exist outside my writing
My Works
☆ The Taste of Hallowed Earth
This is my primary wip and I'm currently in the process of writing the first draft. Associated tracking: #the taste of hallowed earth, #oc sadie, #oc mercy
Following the recent death of her mother, Sadie Copeland returns to Salvation, Mississippi, the town they left behind twelve years ago. Upon arriving there, it's clear something's going on—something that no one wants to talk about and that everyone hides from when the sun goes down.
Themes: southern gothic horror, unreliable narrators, small towns, unreality, paranoia, death, grief, estranged relationships, religion, trauma, ghosts, psychological horror
☆ In the Heart of the Ocean
A wip still in the planning stages that I dabble in from time to time. Associated tracking: #in the heart of the ocean, #oc caro
Follow Carolina "Caro" Bell as she recounts the disappearance of her best friend Moira from their quiet coastal town as teenagers, and Moira's subsequent reappearance one year later after emerging from the depths of the ocean with no memory of where she'd been—only to disappear forever the following year.
Themes: literary fiction, queerness, magical realism
☆ In the Eyes of the Saints
I don't really post about this one much and it's in a very rudimentary planning stage. Associated tracking: #ies
No one in Jeremiah's family lives past the age of 30 and after the death of his sister, he knows it's only a matter of time before it's his turn. So, he does the only thing he can think of: he runs. However, in a turn of misfortune, he ends up in a small little town on the other side of the country where he meets Father Celeste, the enigmatic priest who seems to be not entirely human. . .
Themes: Catholicism, guilt, cosmic horror, internalized homophobia, and dare I say, hierophilia
