God, I ADORE this fic, and forgive the long ass post but I have quite a few things to say about it. First of all, very bittersweet that this is the second to last chapter, but I think that this fic truly was a wonder to read and the ending next chapter would feel complete. But the CHARACTERS?????

Hey so Porty, right. Porty is such an important character to me in this fic, especially as a trans person myself. I won't spoil anything but he's so amazingly written. Red Son as well! This fic really does remind me of some of my favourite pieces of literature and I find myself thinking about it REGULARLY. So I decided to share some art i did ^^.

And since its not exactly too obvious, the bugs on Porty's side are tear drinking moths (Hemiceratoides hieroglyphica and Mecisoptera litochroa). On Red's side are the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) and the swallowtail butterfly (Papilio machaon). The flowers under Porty are obviously a rose and a sunflower, whilst under Red is a milkweed and a peony (the peony is for a reference to a different fic which you should check out by the same author)

So to keep this short and not get into my horridly complex thoughts about the characters analysis wise, HERE THEY ARE MY LITTLE FUCKERSSSSS

If Tripitaka were to die during Journey to the West, in your opinion, what would happen?

Would he remain dead and reincarnated or be revived? Would they have to restart the cycle again? Through what means do they go through to get the monk and recover the Scriptures? Sorry if this turned out to be a barrage speculative questions😅 I had done no prior research (I will though!) and wanted to hear your take on it

Btw, I love the extensive research that you have compiled to make such informative articles!! they make excellent references and there's literally a well-written article for just about everything. it's nice to read something that was done with so much passion overall

Thank you for the kind words. The novel is my passion. Now onto your questions.

Not counting the Ginseng Fruit that gives Tripitaka a nigh-immortal, steel-like body, Guanyin or even the Buddha himself would prevent the monk from being killed. However, for the sake of argument, there are a number of ways to bring him back, but the methods used depend on the state of his body. For example, if his vessel is destroyed, his disciples could mimic this trick:

Ch. 11 - The soul of a Tang official's long-dead wife is given new life in the form of a recently dead princess. The soul is wed with the new vessel at the request of underworld officials.

The pilgrims would just need to find him a newly deceased body. But if his form is whole enough, there are a few methods:

Ch. 9 - Tripitaka's deceased father, who had been murdered by bandits and thrown into a river, is brought back to life by simply reuniting soul with body. His vessel was preserved with a magic pearl and, along with his self-aware spirit, kept in the undersea dragon kingdom. The Dragon King orders that the two halves be reunited some 18 years later.

Ch. 39 - Monkey brings a foreign king, who had drowned in a well, back to life by placing a magic pill (bestowed by Laozi) into his mouth and blowing the primate's immortal breath into his lungs.

Ch. 97 - Wukong goes to the underworld and asks permission from Boddhisatva Ksitigarbha to take the soul of a recently murdered foreign householder back to earth. He then reunites soul with vessel.

These are the only methods that come to mind. I hope this helps.

Edit: According to the novel, uniting the spirit with the old or newly deceased body apparently heals whatever was originally wrong with the vessel. But Monkey could also heal any damage with his immortal breath provided that Tripitaka's body doesn't have huge chunks missing.

I have expanded this ask into an article for my research blog. Part of the introduction reads:

The novel presents two main modes of revivification: 1) forcing the soul into the original or new body; and 2) causing the spirit to reform within the old vessel using a magic pill and rescue breathing. The first method requires underworld authorization, while the second does not. There’s quite a bit of stuff going on so breakdown time💃💃💃

I was looking to kinda start elaborating 3am’s timeline a bit since it is way different than what we think happened in canon and jttw,, this was basically the sparksnote version and more of Heaven’s involvement during those 500 years since Heaven’s role in Wukong’s and Macaque’s lives is the main plot of Celestial Affairs

This whole thing is in the pov of Macaque, so we don’t get a lot of what Wukong really went through during this period, but he changed a lot after everything he went through, they both did, and it’s because of these changes that they were able to start again, as equals after the journey (an a few centuries of fighting), because their dynamic had become more and more unequal by the time that the war on Heaven happened, highlighting how Macaque’s concerns were swept away by arrogance of winning,

But they both care so much about each other, and they both overcame their struggles….a little too well cause now they got a baby on the way😭😭😭👍

Bit random, and idk if you've answered this sort of ask before, but how do you feel about MK being a shadowpeach baby that shadowpeach themselves didn't even know about? Wanted to know what you thought cause it's fun to think about, considering how similar MK is to Wukong personality and power wise, while way more similar to Macaque in appearance and personality as well sometimes honestly

I’ve seen a lot of people do this plot, including some really great fanfics and Kyri45’s comic which I adored. So I definitely am not averse to it. And I definitely see the appeal because, as you said, he resembles the both of them so much as if he were a combination of the two.

That being said, I don’t usually write those kind of plots for myself. Like I said, no issues with it or anything and I do enjoy other people’s art having to do with it. For me, though, I just think it’s more interesting story-wise for them to become close through a method that’s not just ‘that’s my kid by blood.’ If I were to write a story about Wukong and Macaque becoming MKs dads, I would center it more about Macaque coming around on MK, being surprised by the paternal instincts he finds himself feeling because they are NOT related, and eventually conceding that yeah ok this kid is my kid even though he’s not.

Yes definitely!!

Actually, something I’ve been wanting to write for awhile now is some more Prisoner MK centric stuff.. I’m in the middle of a chapter of A Test of Time that’s MK’s perspective, and it makes me want to go back and do some MK perspective from when he’s actually dealing with the kidnapping and stuff.

The bit I’m most interested in writing is right after MK gets kidnapped for the first time.. Red Son has turned on him and handed him over to his parents. The staff is gone. He’s chained up in a dungeon. And he’s completely, and utterly devastated.. not even so much because of his circumstances right now or even that he lost to DBK. He can’t believe that Red Son betrayed him. It occurs to him for the first time in that dank, miserable place that maybe their whole relationship was a lie and Red Son never actually loved him.

Of course, while he’s stewing in this misery, Red Son shows up to check on him. He quickly dismisses the Bull Clones guarding MK and then rushes into the dungeon cell, seemingly frantic. He asks if MK is hurt, checking him all over, his hands grasping but gentle as he looks genuinely concerned.. this throws MK for a loop because he kind of expected Red Son to just start gloating about how stupid he was to have fallen for the trap the DBK fam laid out for him. But no. Red Son actually wants to know if he’s ok. So, he says he is. Physically. He’s only hurt that Red Son helped his parents put him in this cell. To his credit, Red Son does actually look contrite at being scolded like this. And he even apologizes! (A first for him tbh) He says he’s so sorry it turned out this way. He couldn’t refuse his parents, but he couldn’t stand by and let MK be killed because he loves him.

Hearing those words again makes MK smile genuinely for the first time in this place. He leans forward and kisses Red Son on the nose and says he understands. His parents are really scary, but he doesn’t have to face them alone anymore. He has MK there with him. All Red Son has to do is get these chains off of MK and they can go confront his parents, get the staff back, and save the city! They fan still fix this, together!

This, unfortunately, is met by an awkward laugh by Red Son as he shakes his head, no. He can’t do that. No, no. He can’t turn on his parents. They’re his parents and he loves them! He just also loves MK. Obviously he’s not going to keep MK locked up like this, but his mother said he can’t let the Monkie Kid out until he can guarantee that he’ll behave… he came down here to try to get MK to promise NOT to try to save the city. This is the only way they can still be together. And, obviously, since they’re in love, Red knew that MK would agree.

This is the moment MK realizes what has actually happened. Red Son didn’t come down here to save him. He came down here to try to make him submit to his family’s authority… his first instinct had been correct. Red Son doesn’t actually love him.

He shoves the demon away, glaring at him fiercely and proclaims that he’ll never stop fighting. And if Red Son thinks he could get him to, like, turn evil or something then he’s got another thing coming! And he tries to take a swing at the demon. He doesn’t manage to use his full strength due to the chains still on him, but Red still does get a nasty bruise on his cheek from the hit and has to fall back to avoid MK actually getting at him.

Standing on the other side of the bars again, he looks nearly as sad as MK as he stares on, apparently speechless… finally, he turns away, muttering that he’ll figure something out. He’ll find a way to make sure this will work and MK will behave.. it’ll be fine. They can still be happy. He’ll be back soon.

MK is left alone in the cell, even more miserable than before as he realizes the circumstances he’s in. Red Son doesn’t love him… but he thinks he does. As sad as that is for him, it’s also just bolstering his determination to resist. He’s doesn’t know what the demon is going to try to do to get MK to “behave” but he knows one thing for sure: he’ll never stop fighting and he’ll never forgive Red Son for this.

I like to think that Mei is very very good with children because they see her as one of them 😂 MK is the opposite. He is also viewed as one of them, but he also tries at least a little bit to be responsible and be in charge and that causes children to turn on him.

You said that Jade behaved in a way that made Nezha snap into a Yandere because of her behavior. What was the final straw that made the third lotus prince into Yandere! Nezha? And does Princess Jade Face benefit from it or not cause she seems one of those girls who are into it.

I’m racking my brain but I can’t think of a specific event that would cause it 😂 It probably would have to do with her just trying to make him jealous somehow, though.

Also yeah, Jade Face is definitely the type to actually kinda like having a yandere boyfriend. He murders someone who looks at her too closely and she’s like “awww babe ☺️”
