There were many times during the filming of The Godfather when Al Pacino wanted to quit the set and go home. 21 years later, while working on Carlito’s Way, he did just that. Wearing a knee-length black leather jacket, Pacino sweated his way through take after take of the final and fatal chase scene. Filming began in the winter and finished in the middle of summer; not exactly leather weather. “At one point,” said Brian De Palma, “Al said he’d had enough and actually took the train home.”

Portrait of John Milton by Gregory Heisler, 1997. 

Heisler was responsible for the photography on The Devil’s Advocate. (He’s the man behind the poster!) He explained in his book, Gregory Heisler: 50 Portraits: Stories and Techniques from a Photographer’s Photographer, how this arresting photo was born. Wrapping up the exhaustive shoot, which included medium shots and close-ups, Heisler was eager for a full-body shot and hoped Pacino would indulge him. Tired but willing, “Pacino silently walked over to the wall and, still in his character’s slightly malevolent mode, turned to face the camera. Arms at his sides, without seeming to do anything, he projected serious-as-a-heart-attack gravitas. I said nothing. He was giving me a gift.”
