where: turntable express
the record store is dimly lit, with only the glow from the counter lamp and a few overhead lights providing illumination. mercury is sorting cassettes from a cardboard box, slow and methodical. he hums starman quietly as he works, lost in his own little world for the time being.
when he hears the telltale ring of the bell alerting him that someone has entered the store, he looks up, pushing his glasses further up on his nose. he gives a small smile at the newcomer before continuing his work. "if you're here for something specific, i can help. if you're just browsing...take your time. i'm in no rush."
Turntable express had easily, and quickly, become one of Jin’s favourite stores. He didn’t DJ anymore, but that certainly didn’t stop him from creating his own mixes when he had a slow evening. He let the door close behind him and took in the ambience and environment of the store. It was always a comfort to come here.
“I’m… both?” Jin said, furrowing his brows thoughtfully. “I’m looking for the hidden and forgotten gems, if you know if any, I’m all ears. If not I’ll dig through your crates until I find something that jumps out at me.” He said with a warm smile towards Mercury. “Is there a, like, used records crate, or is that a longshot for this ship, maybe?”
who: juneau & OPEN @pigeonstart where: starlight park
"Aht! Out of your mouth!" Juneau knelt to Nacho 2.0's weirdly-realistic robot mouth. You'd figure a robot pet wouldn't have all of the same quirks as real ones, but Juneau supposed when they programmed it with Nacho 1.0's curiosity and ambition, that meant even a robot dog would try to eat a...What was that? She wriggled it from between his teeth, then shook the drool off of the chewed pulpy mess. "Does this...belong to anyone?" She shouted, holding it over their head. "I apologize deeply if so."
Haneul had been sitting on the grass nearby, a book open in his lap and enjoying what definitely passed for a quiet afternoon in the park. He’d looked up at the commotion, and watched the whole thing unfold with a smile playing over his lips. That was, until he recognised the chewed, soggy remains of the front cover of his backup pocket book he had brought. Haneul stood up after closing the book in his lap. “I think that’s mine.” He said, walking over to her, accepting what was now a pulpy mess. He turned it over in his hand, pursing his lips thoughtfully. “I didn’t know dogs were this into mystery novels.” He joked and offered Juneau a smile. “Are they always this ambitious, or is this a romcom level meet-cute?” He added jokingly, turning his attention to the robot dog.
Mateo didn’t look up right away when Jin’s voice cut through the quiet, he kept his attention focused on his cosmo link, just letting the corner of his lips curl ever so slightly as the other's voice settled in his mind. He let them sink, like ink, into his skin and dissolve into his veins. If they hadn't been in public, Mat would have surely shoved Jin against the nearest surface for a kiss by now. He'd be a liar if he said he hadn't thought about that night repeatedly, despite telling himself it was just a really fun time. Perhaps he was imagining the other's voice, god knows he's tried to hold on to what it sounded like since he last heard it, or maybe the cosmos were playing a rather cruel prank on him.
There was only one way to find out.
He turned his head, lashes lifting, and there he was—those soft, familiar eyes, his scent clouded him, he had to remind himself of self-restraint for a split second. Despite what he felt internally, externally was an entirely differently person. “Hello, Jin,” he murmured, like he was tasting the moment, that name on his tongue, more than reacting to it. He shifted, angling himself a little more toward Jin, arm draping across the back of the bench. He wanted to touch him, if only to make sure he was real. “I mean… if I had followed you,” he says, voice lilting with quiet amusement, “I’d at least like to think I’d be more subtle about it.” A small pause, just enough for the tease to breathe. “But who knows. I’ve heard space does funny things to people. Makes them do bold, questionable, incredibly romantic things.” His gaze flickered over Jin’s face, unhurried, recommitting him to memory.
“Truth is, I just like being out here,” he admits, looking back out towards the park. “Reminds me of home a little. Fresh air—or, you know, the ship’s best attempt at it. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite spots." A faint smile tugged at his lips again. “Didn’t expect to run into you, though. But I’m not exactly complaining. Some things are worth crossing a few galaxies for.” He tilted his head slightly, returning his gaze to Jin, eyes bright with a sense of mischief. “So tell me,” Mateo hummed, nudging just a little closer without quite closing the space, “was I so bad that it made you leave earth?”
Jin listened to Mateo’s voice, and watched him carefully as he spoke. Honestly, it still didn’t feel real. There had to be something in this weird space ship air that had him hallucinating, right? Because there was no way that the one night stand Jin found himself thinking about so often was now sat in front of him with his perfect smile, and lashes for days. Honestly, in fear of sounding like a romantic comedy, the sight of him and the sound of his voice was a lot better than he remembered.
Jin shifted in his position, getting himself more comfortable, and casually brushing his knee against Mateos. He rested his elbow on the back of the bench as he took in the man in front of him again. Christ, he looked amazing, as ever. “Romantic? I’m not sure I’ve heard that about space before, but I’m interested to learn more about it.” He said with a smile tugging on his lips again. He shifted again, so he could reach for Mateo’s hand. He wasn’t sure if it was because he was genuinely unable to keep his hands to himself around this man, or if it was to make sure for his own sake that he wasn’t hallucinating. Imagine he was getting all hot and bothered and no one was there? He’d eject himself from the ship immediately.
“It is really nice here.” Jin agreed, looking around the park briefly, before back to Mateo and then down to their hands where Jin’s thumb was brushing over the back of his hand. “I can see why you like it. I like it too. In fact, I like it even more now.” He smiled at the other.
Mateo’s last question caught him a little off guard. It landed somewhere it probably shouldn’t have. Instantly, Jin looked back up at Mateo. “Yes, devastating,” Jin said as a joke, holding eye contact a little longer than he probably should. In fact that night had been so amazing he had wondered if leaving earth was the best call for him, turns out it definitely was the best call. “Completely ruined me. Lucky for you, I’m pretty fair in my assessments, so you’ll get the chance to make it up to me.” He gave his hand a squeeze. “If you want to. I can even buy you pie first, if that’ll make you feel better.” He added, another call back to their time together before.

location: observatory
on days that kermit isn't working, he likes to spend some of his time in the observatory. he finds a sense of peace in being able to look out into the vastness of space, like somehow, he just knows everything will be okay when he looks out there. it's a silly thought, but it provides him some comfort, leaving earth wasn't an easy choice for him.
he hadn't been able to sleep much, tossing and turning in his bed, so he decided to come here. it had to be the very early hours of the morning, but then again, time didn't really matter here. he looks into the screen displaying footage of outer space, sitting cross-legged in front of it. when he hears footsteps approaching, he turns his head in their direction. "morning. or...whatever time it is here. i didn't think anyone would be up this early. you have trouble sleeping too?"
Since boarding the ship, Jin had a difficult time adjusting his sleep schedule. He was used to working nights and wandering home in the dead of night. It was a habit that was hard to shake. Pair that with the completely new environment, it was a lost cause. Tonight he had simply given up, and gotten back out of bed. Rather than pick up a book, he ended up wandering the corridors, opting for exploring rather than winding down in the end.
Jin hadn’t planned on ending up in the observatory, but there he was. The screen had caught his attention, and he had stood in the doorway for a moment just looking at it. He hadn’t really noticed Kermit on the floor before he said something. “Hm? Oh… yeah,” he shrugged his shoulders. He sat down near Kermit. “I’m not used to all the weird noises or patterns of the ship yet.” He explained with a small chuckle. “I didn’t know there was a whole observatory here, that’s pretty cool.” He looked around at the screen. “What’s keeping you up?” He looked at Kermit. “I mean, without being too invasive.”
Closed starter for Mateo @novadrift Setting: Starlight Park
Jin had found the park mostly by accident, following a corridor he hadn’t tried yet until it opened up into something that felt familiar and new at the same time. He took a moment to take it in, the green, the simulated warmth on his face, the smell of something that wasn’t just recycled ship air… He hadn’t realised how much he’d missed this until now. Jin was many things, but an outdoorsy person he was not. However, being on a space ship might just turn him into one.
He found a relatively quiet spot under a tree, and was sitting with his back against the bark, headphones half on, half off, and watched the light filter through the leaves of the tree he was leaning against. That’s when he saw him, just casually sitting on a bench, in all his… perfection. It took Jin a moment to realise who he was looking at, and he almost let out the first and only gasp of his life when he realised where he had seen him before. (No, it wasn’t actually on the cover of a magazine, but the man certainly belonged on one).
Jin blinked. Surely not… right? No. That was definitely Mateo. He could pick those lashes and lips out from a line-up anywhere. Of all the places Jin thought he’d ever run into one of his past hook-ups, a god damn space ship was definitely not one of them. The corner of Jin’s mouth pulled up despite himself, and he stood up from his spot under the tree.
“You know, if you wanted my number you could have just asked.” Jin said as he slipped into the seat on the bench next to Mateo, casually leaning his arm on the back of it as his body was turned to face the other man. “Following me onto a space ship is a new one.” He added playfully. Definitely not unwelcome, though, he thought to himself.

Milo wandered without hurry, drifting from one display to the next, fingertips brushing along the edges as his eyes traced each label in quiet fascination—velvet static, sunburst delirium, midnight hush, neon confession, gravity sleep. None of them sounded real, not in the practical sense; they read like moments, like moods, like something you’d feel at 2 a.m, something between here and there. Part of him supposed they were exactly that, each one specifically designed to fulfill any needs a person could seek. Sleep, lessen stress, become one with zero gravity.
He lingered on one vape, then another, turning a sleek device over in his hand as if it might tell him more if he looked long enough. His head tilted slightly, attention snagging on the presence of someone nearby, and he glanced sidelong at them briefly. “Do you suppose there is a universal vape?” he asked, curiously, giving the device a small, absent spin between his fingers. “One that you can change the flavor with the turn of a knob, or do you suppose you have to refill them every time?”
As he moved through the displays, Haneul too had been taking in the names with mild amusement. Neon confession and midnight hush were his favourites so far. He really wished they’d had one that was just called ‘good old-fashioned cigarette’, though. He glanced over at the question, then to the device in the mans hand.
“Universal would be a really practical choice.” He said with a nod. “Or a mystery one, where every time you take a drag there’s a different flavour?” He suggested with a playful smile spreading over his lips. “I don’t know if the universal one would fit as easily in your hand or pocket if you loaded up different flavours next to one another.” He said, picking up one of the sleek devices, as well, turning it over in his hand. Though, the idea of being able to shift the flavour that quickly was appealing. But it would be a disaster if the flavours somehow got mixed.
“Have you managed to settle on one of these flavours?” Haneul looked back up at Milo. “I’m really unsure. The names don’t give much away. And I’m not sure I trust anything called gravity sleep while on a space ship.” He said, pointing to the label in question.

Bo wasn't feeling particularly ready to to dive into any virtual reality scenarios just yet, not with the throbbing shiner consuming a great part of his face. The thought of encasing a black eye in those goggles made him wince, but even so, he had come to check out what was available. He had been an avid enjoyer of VR games back on Earth, and while he was excited about his new adventure in his real life, he thought that it was only a matter of time before he'd be going back to his old habits.
Turning to the person beside him, the only one in the vicinity not suited up for or in the middle of a virtual reality, Bo cocked his head to the side. "What d'you reckon the most popular experience in here will be by the end of the voyage? Like, the most popular reality people will be going in to?"
Haneul had only really stopped by to have a look at what experiences were available. He had played his fair share of VR games before, some on streams, but he had never been very good at them. Especially not the ones where he was dealing with people, he always ended up accidentally punching them instead of helping them. He hadn’t really committed to putting on any of the goggles yet, though. He liked to know what he was getting into first.
Haneul turned his head to the person beside him as he spoke to him. He noted the black eye, and tilted his head curiously, but didn’t comment on it for now. “Apart from any lewd ones?” He half-joked, he wished he could joke it away, anyway, “probably the ones resembling earth and the way life used to be there, don’t you think?” He shrugged his shoulders. “I mean, we’re here for a change of scenery, right, but there’s something about nostalgia that draws you back in. In a few years time people will probably want to revisit old memories, maybe their old hometowns or placed they used to holiday.”
He glanced over at Bo properly. “What do you think? What’s your go to virtual reality?”

Eurydice had had no issues with operating her Cosmo Link since take off, naturally, as someone who worked on the team that developed, refined, and maintained the technology. Not everyone had gotten the hang of the new technology so quickly, however, and so Eurydice had found herself having what felt like more conversations in the past week than she had had in her entire life before the starship.
She had become incredibly vigilant, particularly when it came to looking out for people struggling with their Cosmo Links. That's how she found herself noticing the person who she stepped closer towards. "You good?" She asked in a casually friendly tone of voice - the tone she had gotten used to putting on as of late. "I noticed you staring at it; didn't know if you were struggling, or just like, either regretting or admiring your cosmetic choices," she chuckled.
Jin wasn’t entirely sure how long he had been standing there with his wrist at eyelevel at a slight angle, studying the deep blue glow of the crescent moon the way you’d look at a new piece of equipment you hadn’t quite figured out yet. That was, by all accounts, exactly what this was, though. He hadn’t really had any trouble with it, he just wasn’t entirely sure what possibilities he had.
Jin snapped out of his thoughts when Eurydice approached him, lowering his arm as he moved his gaze to her. “Honestly, it’s a little bit of both.” He said with a light chuckle.. “I think I just keep expecting it to do something unexpected, like, you know, when you accidentally open the speech to text when you’re writing a message?” He had done that too many times, accidentally sending some colourful wordings about his shitty phones to unsuspecting people.
“You seem like someone who knows their way around these things, though, since you’re asking.” He smiled sheepishly. “Do you have any tips and tricks?”
"How likely do you think those two will make things on board interesting?" Nodding towards a couple, how they were making out in the hot tub overlooking the stars, before smirking at her acquaintance. "First, they introduced themselves to each other. They swam together, talking, laughter between them. Then, they started fighting over in the water park because that one—" she says, pointing to the tallest of the two, "looked at the lifeguard a second too long. Now, they're kissing and making up in the hot tub, which is definitely need to be disinfected after they're done. All within the past twenty minutes. Now, my theory is that they're already a couple, and taking advantage of this adventure to start a new life and have a little fun by pretending to not know each other. I work fast, but not that fast. What do you think? Already got your eye on anyone, or simply enjoying the beginning of our voyage among the stars?"

Jin turned to look at the couple she was pointing out with mild interest. The way she was narrating really made them more interesting, it was like watching something unfold on a screen rather than in real life. He pursed his lips thoughtfully before responding. “Twenty minutes,” he repeated flatly, glancing at the hot tub. “I mean, it’s good to just cut to the chase sometimes, you know? But it doesn’t sound very healthy in a relationship setting.” He shrugged his shoulders. “I like your theory, though. The jealousy arc happened too fast to be organic, so probably a rehearsed fight. Or, maybe they just happened to be victims of love at first sight? No reason to beat around the bush then, I guess.” Love at first sight didn’t seem plausible to him in any capacity, or reality for that matter. But who knows, some people might have more feelings than him.
“Do I have my eye on anyone?” His thoughts immediately went to someone, that special someone he always seemed to have an excuse to go see. “Sure I do, there are a lot of pretty people around on the ship. But I joined for the space travel, obviously.” He smiled at her. “What about you? Or are you still scoping out the place? At what point do you think we start getting sick of people on this ship? I mean, there are only so many here, what if the person we’re meant to be with didn’t get selected? That means we’re fucked, right?”
"Did you ever imagine this? Growing up?" Ora stocked up some records before glancing over. It was weird: going to work, as if in any other regular place... Yet if you looked out any window, there was stars. There were planets. "Y'know, when I was a kid, I had a dream where I was lying on a planet, yet there were stars and planets all around me. I was reclining back, just like I would under a tree, but there was no gravity. No spacesuit to keep me safe. Just space, and I could bounce from planet to planet if I wanted to. This feels pretty close to that. It's... surreal. Like any moment, I'll wake up in my shitty bedroom, hearing my shitty roommates throughout our shitty house, ready to tackle Toronto for the day."

Jin had been flipping through a crate of records calmly, trying to find something he could make remixes of. Those records were usually well hidden, but hidden gems nonetheless. “Yes, actually.” He nodded to her question, looking up at her with a small smile. He had imagined a lot of things growing up, but going to space had be a recurring theme in his daydreams, and art. “I always wanted to go to space. But had you told me at twenty I’d end up on a spaceship, I probably wouldn’t believe you.” He pushed the stack of records he had flipped through back in their box properly and stepped back from it.
“I think your dream sounds better than mine though, in mine I was on a mission of some sort. Saving the moon from the evil moon-snatchers, or whatever.” Jin laughed lightly. “To live in peace on some planet far away from all problems would be ideal, so I like that scenario better.” Jin stepped to the next crate and started slowly flipping through the records in it. “Are you excited about this journey, then, or do you ever wish you were back in your Toronto house?”
"How ready are you to fuck an alien?" Their grin grew mischievous. "I'm just saying: a lot could happen in the next twenty to twenty-five years before we get there! What if these Cosmo thingamajigs are genetically mutating us, slowing our physical ages to make us live longer and look like we're ten, fifteen years younger than our biological age? What if aliens also move to Mundus Meus, causing us to co-live with them? Do you think they could be homogeneous or diverse, just like humans? What if we could procreate with them? What do you think a human-alien hybrid baby would look like? Ugly-cute or cute-cute or ugly-ugly-but-in-a-cute-way?"

Haneul turned his head to the person speaking to him. The starting line had him pause for a moment, causing him to lose the game of pac-man he was playing. He let them finish. All of it. The full spiral, from alien fucking to hybrid baby aesthetic. They had asked seven questions, but Haneul was still stuck on the first one. He was not ready to fuck an alien, actually. Maybe this voyage wasn't as thoughtout as he wanted to believe it was, from his side anway.
“Do you think it’ll come to that?” He looked at them, brows furrowed as he thought about the possibilities and outcomes. “Well, if I’ve learned anything from The Sims, it’s that alien babies look a little weird and have black eyes, but as they grow older they can disguise themselves as humans so I don’t think we’d notice much difference if we have to co-exist anyway.” He said after a moment of thought. “So probably cute-cute, depending on the parents. The people who say all babies are cute are liars. Also, as for your first question I’d need to know their stance on small talk first. I can’t stand it, and I think that’s a dealbreaker, regardless of species.” He half-joked. He really did hate small talk.
“Are you prepared to start alien families? What if they have to wait for us to get really old before they can hook up?” He asked them back.
