I read the Fruits Basket manga back in the day, but there’s definitely a bunch of things I’ve forgotten over the years. I still own all the volumes, but I can’t decide if I want to go back and reread the series or if I should just take the anime reboot as it comes.

So I’m watching the new She-Ra, and it’s reminding me of this time when I was a kid. My mom loves garage sales, and one day she came home with this action figure for me that she got at one. I didn’t know who She-Ra was, but I knew this action figure of her was a superhero toy of some sort.

I was around five at this time, my next door neighbor just a few months older than me, and we would play together a lot. One afternoon, he wanted to play superheroes, so I told him to hold on, and I ran home to get She-Ra. Then I ran back to his house to show him the toy.

“Girls can’t be superheroes,” he said.

I punched him in the face and went home.
