Saving shigaraki just got more complicated like even if deku saves him AFO can just blow him up too. This really will not be good for izukus phsyce
this is something I would like to talk about more! because yeah, you're absolutely right. for a moment there it seemed like this chapter might finally start taking Deku's mental health in a more hopeful direction. he successfully defeats Nagant, and it seems like he might actually convince her to join his side too! winning and saving! he helped someone, and he has a potential new ally and a lead to AFO. maybe, just maybe, this is gonna turn out all right.
let's assume for the time being that Nagant is actually not dead and is going to be fine and that Overhaul will heal her, because otherwise her death will unfortunately cast a very bitter shadow over all of the ensuing character development, and I'm really hoping that doesn't happen. I want to be able to enjoy this without having the whole "yet another female character got fridged for this" thing souring all of the resulting angst, sob.
but anyway, so assuming that happens. the thing is, even if Nagant does get healed, the damage to Deku's psyche is already done. he was reaching out to help someone, and then AFO killed them. bam. just like that. for no reason other than to prevent their helping Deku.
this kid already has issues with depending on other people right now. he's already traumatized and scared of other people getting hurt for him. this is basically the last thing he needs right now. confirmation that AFO really will fuck someone up any time, any place, if Deku gets too close to them. Deku was literally holding Nagant's hand. it happened at the precise moment when his guard was at its lowest, when she was supposed to be safe, because that's what heroes are supposed to do -- protect others.
and once again, he couldn't do that.
we definitely seem to have reached, if not the end of this arc, then at least a rest/save point. so here's my wishful thinking, fingers-crossed, fantasy prediction: regardless of whether Nagant lives, Deku is going to finally reach his breaking point here and is going to run off. the timing is especially good because Nagant destroyed his GPS, leaving All Might and the rest with no way to track him down. which suits Deku just fine, because he's done having people die for him. fuck that. fuck that entirely.
and this provides us with an excellent note on which to finally transition back to U.A., with a very sheepish All Might+Hawksquad calling in to admit that they may have sort of, kind of, lost the OFA kid. yeah. whoops.
which in turn would provide what I personally would consider the ideal segue to our long-awaited reunion with everyone's favorite protagonist of BnHA's sister series My Gremlin Academia.
