guys I think I know why they did what they did to marcin in s3

I'm willing to bet my money that while they were writing the script for s3 they came up with an idea of the duel for maciej to free himself but then who should he fight with? marcin of course! it fits narratively. but we need a reason for marcin to be there and not in warsaw. so we’ll make it seem as though he went mad with love and rushed off into the blue yonder.

and then the rest happened

Meanings of the characters’ names from series 1670

I noticed that not much had been said about the characters’ names, so I decided to check whether there might be anything interesting hidden in their meanings and share it here cause maybe it will be an interesting funfact.

Jan - "God has been gracious" Paweł - "small", "humble", or "little"

Zofia - "wisdom"

Stanisław - "one who becomes glorious" or "he who achieves fame"

Jakub - "supplanter" or "heel-grabber"

Aniela - "angel"

Bogdan - "given by God" or "God's gift"

Andrzej - "man", "manly" or "warrior"

Maciej - "gift of God"

Marcin - "dedicated to Mars" or "warrior"

Rozalia - "rose" or "rose garden"

And now I'll share some of my observations and thoughts.

So let's start with main character. The name 'Jan Paweł' is a bit of a gag right from the start. It’s obviously a reference to pope. I think that especially the meaning of name 'Paweł' is funny here because 'humble' is not a word that anyone would use to describe Jan Paweł.

I think the name ‘Stanisław’ is rather ironic, because his name and his position as the eldest son, who is set to inherit everything, suggest someone burdened with many responsibilities, yet Stanisław is the type of person who runs away from them.

The name ‘Jakub’ is a fitting choice for this character. After all, he is the second son who will inherit nothing, yet he wants to manage Adamczycha and ‘eliminate’ his opponents.

Isn't it funny how the names of Maciej and Bogdan means the same thing?

I added Rozalia as well because i wanted to show to point out that her name means "rose" and rose flower symbolizes beauty, love and purity.

i saw the other day that people were complaining about marcin's character arc and their argument was "well they had to make sure aniela would choose maciej cause marcin is perfect so they had to make him worse" and i don't think i've ever heard something so dumb

marcin in s2 was ideal on purpose. he was charismatic, tactful. he had the same ideas and way of thinking as aniela. they even color coded it to us in the last episode of s2 where they both wore blue clothes to drive the idea home that they are on the same page with many things therefore perfect for each other.

the script tries to make us believe that this is how it should be on purpose, that marcin is the better choice for her. she will face no sad consequences if she chooses him. and it's not like aniela is blind or dumb, she sees it and understands it. her mother's letters are what pushes her to make that choice, or rather sacrifice.

yeah but that's not how love works. aniela loves only one person and that person is maciej. and she loves him for who he is despite their different backgrounds and complicated situations. even her mom sees it, the person who arguably was the most adamant that aniela must marry a nobleman. but she herself knows that love is not like that and she chooses to let that love live and doesn't pressure her daughter anymore (we even see her happy for aniela in the finale of s3)

i hate when people think of love as this shallow feeling that we can choose who to share it with because it's more convenient or easier. as if love is that simple.

Another neat detail I noticed in Wake Up Dead Man is that when Father Jud says he’s just spent the past hour writing down everything that happened and summing up the story, it actually happens exactly one hour into the film.

A lot of people talk about this scene — how the light seems to act as if it were its own character, carrying with it a fragile kind of hope. But what strikes me most is what Benoit Blanc says just before that. In just a few words, he seems to capture the entire tragedy of Grace Wicks’ life.

Okay. Let’s back up.

This scene left a great impression on me the first time I watched Wake Up Dead Man. I didn’t have the to fully grasp what it was saying. It reminded me of that moment in the first film when Blanc speaks about donuts and holes and the sense of all of it.

Father Jud prompts Blanc to speak truthfully, to share his thoughts about this place. Suddenly, it gets dark. Blanc starts with talk about the grandeur, the mystery. And we are here to solve this mystery.

He says that in this place lies a story that he does not believe in — that the very bedrock of this church was built on a lie. It’s just an empty promise made to a naive child, a promise filled with malevolence, misogyny, and homophobia.

All of this made me think about the story of a person that we heard at the beginning of the movie — it was actually the first story we heard about: Grace Wicks. That harlot whore. That poor girl.

Grace, who was Prentice’s child. Grace, who was promised a great fortune — her great escape from this place. From this place filled with misogyny that kept her under her father’s control. All of that taken away from her.

And just like Benoit wants to pick this place apart and get to the truth he can swallow without choking, Grace tore this place down to find Eve’s Apple.

Eve’s Apple — a jewel that shows us how weak we can be when tempted. A jewel that shows us the truth of human nature.

The truth that some of us cannot swallow without choking.
