Sadly, Jonathan was writing in short-hand, which was newly invented in his time, so there’s little chance that the vampire sisters could understand his diary, but it was too good a joke to miss!

Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein is an ode to all the past tales of Victor Frankenstein and the Monster, from the original novel to its sil

Guillermo Del Toro's Frankenstein is an ode to all the past tales of Victor Frankenstein and the Monster, from the original novel to its silver screen predecessors, so while this review will focus mainly on comparisons between Del Toro and Shelley's visions, bear in mind that I'm not approaching this film as a direct adaptation of the novel.

I've seen criticisms that Del Toro's film villianises Victor while turning the Creature into an innocent victim. Sympathy towards the "monstrous other" is a common theme in Del Toro's storytelling. But here, I would like to bring up one of the central themes of the Frankenstein story, and that is the question of inherent evil (which I discussed in detail in a previous post).

These are my initial thoughts on the film. If you would like to read more on this, do let me know! I would be more than happy to revisit the film and dig a little deeper into its motifs and the films it pays homage to.
