This will be the closest I get to a pet dinosaur. Dressing my dog up as a dino for halloween.
Greece is the Word
I work at a gym and anytime the members tell me they are going on an exciting adventure, I tell them "bring me a really cool rock!" I got an awesome sandstone from the Grand Canyon and then this week, another member returned from a long backpacking trip around Europe.
He brought me a couple pebbles from a beach in Greece! The first one I think I identified right away, because we had just finished up a lab in our Natural Disasters class.
On the left is a breccia. Breccia are formed from a solidification of sediments and pebbles. What I could find when searching the terms "Greek Beach and Breccia" was a book about breccia formed in the Pleistocene era. The book is The Early and Middle Pleistocene Archaeological Record of Greece. Could this be one of those rocks? I can only speculate.
On the right in the picture is a piece of calcium feldspar. I brought this to my Natural Disasters teacher and that is his assessment. The word feldspar is greek for oblique fracture. It's such a pretty rock. Very light and sparkly! I can't wait to throw some HCl on it to see if the calcium deposits fizz! Did you know that calcium is a metal? In fact, the "calcium" in calcium feldspar is actually calcium carbonate. It's also what makes seashells white.
Mind. Blown.

Dinosaur Erotica is a Very Real Thing.
I.... I don't even know what to say. I'm pretty sure that there wasn't much research done to accurately portray the dinosaurs in these novels...so maybe, just maybe I should read them to make sure. Wonder if I'd get extra credit in my Dinosaurs class for pointing out what was wrong with the dinosaur descriptions.
Anyhoo...here's an excerpt!
Azog stood, back to the wall, clad only in damp buckskins, waiting for the beast to slash at her torso until she lay helpless and bleeding on the damp cave floor. She wondered if it would kill her first, or if her limbs would be sliced from her body as the beast gorged on her.
Instead, it reached out with a classed hand to snatch at her damp animal hide as it clung to one shoulder. Azog felt the kiss of sharp claws against her skin as the hide slid from her shoulder and exposed on naked, heaving breast. The raptor paused, curious, sniffing at her as she pressed desperately against the wall.
A reptilian tongue, stiff and hot, dashed out to lick at the tender, naked flesh so suddenly exposed. Azog gasped at the touch, then gradually relaxed as her body warmed to the intoxicating sensation of the beast's flesh against her own.
She wasn't sure if her sudden arousal was because of her earlier thwarted climax in the cool stream, or if she was just desperate for one last pleasant sensation before being torn limb from limb by the great, scaly beast. Either way, Azog relished the rasp of its tongue, hot and rough, on her sensitive skin.
Well, I'll be in my bunk...for research.
Yeah...research.

Neat!
Bill Nye! Doing the Robot! In a Tron Outfit! To Daft Punk! In a Leg Imobilizer! (all arguments are invalid)
Bill Nye was eliminated from Dancing With The Stars last night. Which is a damn shame, but after his injury, I'm glad he'll be able to stay off his 80% ripped quadricep and heal. Needless to say, the ratings will go down considerably and the judges were way too harsh. His performance was by far, leaps and bounds better than Valarie Harper's awful dancing. All 3 weeks! I'll never watch this show again...unless Neil deGrasse Tyson is invited on.
wait, what?
Yes!!!!!!
It's officially dinosaur awesomeness day.
Dinosaurs! On a Spaceship! @NASA
Photo Credit Karen Nyberg / NASA via Pinterest
Flight engineer, Karen Nyberg has been busy in space doing space type things, but not so busy as to ignore her crafter tendencies. She made the dinosaur toy for her earth bound 3 year old, Jack, out of scraps from a Velcro like fabric that is used to line Russian food containers.
This pulls at my crafty heart strings a little. It combines three of my favorite things. Dinosaurs, Space Travel, and Crafting. The only thing it's missing? Googly Eyes. I think we need to talk to mega crafter, Bonnie Burton about getting some Googly Eyes in Space! I'd love to see some Giant Googly Eyes on the International Space Station.
