My English is a combination of translator and what I learned at school and a lot of other ways (English cartoons, fanfics, surfing Tumblr. Learning new stuffs everyday), so it's all weird. A couple of days ago @atlaskaida asked me what my favorite side characters are. When it comes to ADJL, all I could think of is Susan Long, for her little stories and buried in oblivion

1. Thought process and headcanon based on canon
Ok, so Lao Shi is a dragon, Jake and Haley can turn into dragons, but Susan can...not? Why? Because of atavistic heredity? That only raises more questions. Is she half-human or not? How does this inheritance even work?
Maybe it's American logic and everyone accepts it already so-
Ok I saw this. I guess it's just the creator's preference😐SHAME
To fill this plot hole that creator never thought about filling, here are some headcanons that may somehow explain why Susan cannot turn into a dragon while giving this character more background
My theory is that her dragon chi was taken away. It's possible since Jake was done the same because of a prank, temporarily. Susan's dragon chi could be taken or sealed away forever because she fell in love with a human? Though I don't remember if there's any hints that Lao Shi married a human. If not, then Susan is a pure-blood dragon and it'd make sense. Immortals cannot fall in love with mortals thing is quite common in Chinese mythology, such as 牛郎织女
Where's that dragon chi? Maybe it's fused into her jewelry (possibly the earrings because uhh it's there in both seasons) and it can be released when broken, like in the movie Turning Red
I just wish she serves a more important role in guiding Jake and Haley through dragon lives' struggling. The mom need more attention and show time than just...being there
So naturally I'm gonna add some spice to my AUs :P
2. Yokai Demon Ghost trio AU
In this AU, Susan is a pure dragon but fell in love with Johnathan the human, which let her dragon chi taken away and sealed in her earrings, as a punishment by the Dragon Council. I'm still in debate if I should go far as Jake has to fight his way up to save his imprison mother kind of thing like 杨戬劈山救母, or simply stop at mother with no power but still by their sides🤔
(Anyone ever thought about whether they're oviparous or viviparous, that is born as eggs or babies? Yeah it's strange but it won't hurt to imagine haha)
By the way, First had the same punishment for killing people (because they haven't found the way to turn monster back to normal then. Read yokai ninja au comic for details), and his chi was crafted into the 戒尺 Jake found later, in case no one get the hint yet.
3. Secret Trio Dystopia AU
In this AU, Susan was a dragon with the burden of destroying human resistance. She was a spy planted among human resistance by the Dark Dragon (briefly mentioned in this ask) Unfortunately she changed her mind after learning the dark truth under the cover of Dragon rules when living with humans. She also fell in love with Johnathan, the leader of resistance. No surprise, the king was mad, then her dragon chi was took away and she's in prison after that horrifying battle to suppress the resistance.
*sigh* I suppose no one's interested so I don't elaborate much. Thanks for reading, though!
I think it's a result of conflict between American logic and Chinese logic.
I infer the ADJL setting in American logic is that they're people who can turn into dragons. If that's the case, Jake's ancestors are wizards or witches who invented the turning-into-dragons magic and used it on themselves. Then atavistic heredity could be an explanation (also in this case they're born as babies alright or else they can't fool Johnathan)
But still, Susan is a Chinese
In Chinese's knowledge, dragons or loongs appeared long before humans. They're ancient powerful magical creatures. Naturally when human society was developing, they figured a way to turn into humans to blend in. Not to mention how great status dragons are in Chinese people's mind. Dragon genes have to be dominant. (come on no one's interested in dragon eggs?)
In conclusion, a conflict between American and Chinese logic😗

How about American Dragon and Danny Phantom
Ok, I don't have many favorite side characters in ADJL, so this post will focus on Danny Phantom
First is Danny's mentors or teachers. Danny is quite lucky to have great teachers in his constantly-struggling hero life, I must say😉
Next is Danny's clones. I once had some headcanons about how Dani trying to catch up with Danny who's getting more and more powerful day by day, but then fair game happened. I guess she'll find her place in this world at last, together with her new-found big brother😂
And Desiree because she's beautiful :P
As for ADJL, I could only think of Susan so far. I'll make another post about it if possible

On first thought, I don't really have a "favorite". However, some characters popped out of my head when I was looking at the question and it's probably my subconsciousness's reminding, so:

I realized I like most characters somehow related to the Norrisville Ninja generations or inheritance? Perhaps I'm just curious what their stories are. Hmm, yummy lore... Sure First Ninja and the Creep have been explored by other fans so I only ramble others here:
If Mac was a bad person, why did Nomicon choose him? Maybe he was good then something happend and he changed?
Why is Ninja of '05 so big and strong and lack of comments?😂
Is blacksmith's shop existing in high school normal in American schools or it's only in Norrisville? Is there also an inheritance of sword smith? Perhaps S. Ward Smith experienced the same like how he teaches Brent? Will Brent inherit the shop in the end?

Celebrity Trio Flower Fairies AU Character Introduction
What do you know, we have celebrity trio in this au, too! :D
Zak is the flower fairy of Renanthera, or "fire orchid" when translated literally from Chinese name. He has the power of controlling insects (yeah we limit it a bit since controlling all animals sounds overkill for a fairy) and the Claw
Ben is the flower fairy of Green Lisianthus. He has the power of shapeshifting, which allows him to turn into anything or anyone he'd seen and touched (as a callback to the canon Omnitrix)
Rex is the flower fairy of Tweedia, or "blue star flower" when translated literally from Chinese name. He can form weapons with petals (Imagine those little flowers as nanites and you get what I mean)
For more coordinated trio colors and nothing too much like Zak or Jake we chose blue flowers for Rex instead of red and orange. And now two trios can make rainbow colours :3

She's a double agent for the Ministry of Magic. She uses dragon heartstring wand and has a chimp familiar doing all the dirty works for her. Her lifelong goal is to seize the Sorcerer's dark magic and gain a permanent dragon Animagus form, and the spell in need of all 3 of the trio. How could she still be headmaster for so long? Well, she have some ways :)
Divinations (1st-6th grade) and Headmaster (7th grade-later): Clockwork--Mr. Krow Kcolc
Divination Professor, who secretly masters time magic and owns a Time-Turner. (He doesn't really know divination. But hey, who said time magic isn't a kind of divination?)
He's the trio's favorite professor. They love visiting him for advice or hoping for a glimpse of their future, and Clockwork always tell them to enjoy the present, everything will work out.
He has an orange owl familiar...huh, an intelligent one.
Care of Magical Creatures: Sun Park
She's a nice professor, also the one saving Randy from his mess and escorting him later

He's also a former auror, who's fired for misconduct. He teaches dangerously reckless lessons until the end of Year 3
Defense Against the Dark Arts (4th-? grade): Vlad Masters
He's Danny's nightmare. Turns out the reason he pays so much attention to Danny is because he knows Danny's parents and had a crush on Danny's mom. However, he's quite delighted to see Danny's in Slytherin like he was when in Hogwarts.
Groundskeeper: Wulf
He's an example of what happens when you do an animagus spell wrong and you get permanently stuck between forms. He's a humanoid wolf person who speaks Esperanto.

Tengu
Captured by Chang to harvest its feathers for her grand ritual; escaped captivity. Its venom can open dimensional rifts. The trio rescues it and names it Howard.

Venomous, pure evil serpent-scorpion hybrid beast, opponent during Triwizard Tournament trials.

Shapeless shadow monsters born from repressed magic; the Sorcerer can mass-produce them.
Undergrowth (Forest Guardian Spirit)
Ancient magical entity bound by an old pact; the Forbidden Forest's flora acts as a natural seal containing the Sorcerer.
