In which I lose fitbit and mourn the loss
A week after attending the quantified workshop that caused me to purchase fitbit in the first place - I was back in London on the 18th November for a course and disaster struck. Somewhere between enjoying a Thai massage and meeting my friends for dinner - I lost fitbit.
This was super annoying for several reasons. 1. I had chosen to walk (in the rain!) from London Liverpool Street to the Barbican to up my step count and was very close to comfortably meeting my step goal. 2. I dislike losing things, especially when they have cost me money and are relevant to both my work and my personal life. 3. I suffered withdrawal.
Reason 3 is probably the most significant. Interestingly I was not expecting it. In fact the week before at the quantified workshop I confided to someone that I was secretly desperate to take it off, just for a while, just to have a little break from judging my numbers. So, you'd think that losing it would perhaps have been the welcome relief I'd been waiting for. But no, I found myself tracing my steps back (untracked) to the places I had been since losing fitbit and desperately asking around to see if anyone had found it. I mournfully examined my data to see during which 15 minute interval I had lost it, and googled "what to do if I've been an idiot and lost my fitbit" and was advised to use bluetooth to track it down...This might have worked had I lost it in my house, office or car rather than a city...
The next day, I continued to go about my business and again voluntarily walked (in the cold) from Barbican to Liverpool Street. But alas, without fitness pal my steps were no longer being tracked. And, I (little miss laugh in the faces of virtual badges) missed the validation of it all.
