Poet Taylor Steele captures the problem with appropriating Black slang.
In her poem “AAVE” (which stands for African-American Vernacular English) Taylor Steele explains why appropriation of Black slang is the worst. I’m not Indian because my family is from Guyana. I’m not Indian because my dad is white. I’m not Indian because I was born in Canada. All the time people are telling me how and why I am not ‘Indian enough’ and for a very long time I believed them. This past year I’ve discovered more about my history and myself than I had ever before, and it’s the first time that I’ve truly felt connected to my culture. I’m proud of my skin, of my heritage and of my roots, and a lot of this pride and confidence came from this book, the first YA book I have ever read with a protagonist who was culturally relatable for me. My identity matters, and no one can erase it.
