Okay. For my money, the entire thesis of Chris Nolan’s 2026 film The Odyssey is that society chokes and sputters and dies when we abuse, ignore, or violate social norms like the laws of hospitality. That is not really what The Odyssey (the book/poem) is about, but I can clearly see why in the horror that is the 2020s, someone could read The Odyssey and go oh my god that’s a lot of bad dropping in. That’s a lot of bad visits. That’s a clear vision of how the loss of social norms and cohesion fucks you up and how war, literal, brutal war, is a terrible wound that destroys your humanity and your understanding of what civilization and society is. I don’t know that the iteration of Greek society that ultimately birthed the poem would agree with Nolan’s take, but I think this movie is quite ideologically coherent, that Nolan knew exactly what he was trying to say with each and every adaptational change, and I think he wasn’t nuts for using one of the most famous classical western civilization works as a way to make that argument.
"You know, when I first moved in, he didn't know what to make of me, if you can imagine that. But I hoped we could be friends, so every day at teatime, I'd prepare a tray and I'd ask him how his latest case was progressing."

had plans to head over to disneyland paris today but i literally changed plans so that i could see the clair obscur expedition 33 exhibition at the musée d'orsay in paris. it was so surreal to see artwork of this beautiful game alongside artworks of renoir, monet and van gogh. sandfall PLEASEEEEE sell prints of some of these. would buy them in a heartbeat.
Nos vies en Lumière: The Musical Brilliance of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
The reason why I continue to think about Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 months after I played the game is because of how eloquently the story is told through three different forms of art: creative writing, visual arts, and music.
Now, I’ll be honest: I can’t draw to save my life.
However, I do know a bit about writing and a fair amount about music. So as I played, I found myself in awe at how the music shaped the structure of the story. Not only in terms of appreciating the melodic beauty and creative brilliance that Lorien Testard wove into each piece, but in realizing how the placement of each song functions as a narrative technique.
A while ago, I posted about how Clair Obscur has this subtle theme of terrific threes and terrible twos, and how it manifests throughout the story:
“Three endings. Two offered, and one denied.
One choice, two options, three wishes shown.
A Life to Love (Une Vie à T'aimer) for some.
A Life to Paint (Une Vie à Peindre) for others.
A Life to Dream (Une Vie à Rêver), forgotten by Act 2's close. Because Verso threw a letter into the water dockside.”
One song reinforces this structure with surgical precision. A song that, coincidentally, also happens to be exactly 33 minutes and 0 seconds long: Nos vies en Lumière.
Split it into three equal parts, and you get, in order:
Each 11 minutes long. You would think that the game would place the same amount of narrative value on each song?
No. That's the fascinating part.
Three songs, each played during boss battles. Two are mandatory, but one is missable.
Une vie à t’aimer is played during the mandatory fight against Painted!Renoir in Act 2.
Une vie à peindre is played during the mandatory fight against Real!Renoir in Act 3.
Une vie à rever is played during the optional fight against Painted!Alicia in Act 2.
Here’s the kicker: the only time Une vie à rever is required listening is during the credits.
By then you've already chosen between the two endings the game offers, and you're dreaming of the third one that Verso threw into the water.
