The Council met that night, and there was much dissension in the ranks.

 Rocket, of course, made many a loud declaration as to why Kaylna should not be allowed to stay. Koba’s treachery, and Kaylna’s willingness to follow her brother in the beginning, was at the forefront of his arguments.

 But Kaylna had those who were willing to speak up for her too.

 The matriarch of the bonobos, for one. And of course, Caesar himself.

 But the one who struck a chord most with his support was Maurice.

 The wise old orangutan was one who had great cause to be angry with Koba, but he knew how good at heart Kaylna was and her skilled way with the young.

 “Let her at least try to live again among us,” he suggested. “I am willing to speak with those who object. Especially the parents of the young.”

 Mighty Caesar was able to command, but perhaps it was the likes of Maurice and Cornelia who were more able to sway the colony with their gentle persuasion.

 In the end it was decided that Cornelia and Maurice should visit Kaylna’s isolated hut.

 “She may listen to us, and know that the apes are willing to try letting her live among us again, and we will deal with any who make her unwelcome,” Cornelia told Maurice as they walked towards Kaylna’s dwelling,

Cornelia gasped in wonder, watching Kaylna with Cornelius. Her old friend had her brother Koba’s way with the young ones, and also the patience and knowledge to draw out their strengths. What Kaylna had said was true – Cornelius was a strong young ape even if he did not quite believe in himself yet.

Kaylna had stopped Cornelius’s worry-grooming and turned his attention from the stick sorting towards making a spear. Just like Koba had done with the young Blue Eyes, encouraging his strength and his curiosity and urging him to push past anxiety and fear.

“Look,” she signed to her husband, her eyes bright with excitement. “She’s beginning to reach Cornelius, in a way neither you nor I were able to do! Even our wise Maurice was not able to calm him, and yet our old friend is beginning to bring the curious, good-natured child he was back to us!”

The queen moved to stroke her little son’s head, her eyes full of pride. She smiled gratefully over at Kaylna. “Thank you,” she signed. “We thought we had lost our precious little boy to stress and sadness. Now he is on the way to healing!”

She frowned, however, when the bonobo refused Caesar’s offer to re-join the ape colony.

“Please come back to us, my friend,” she signed, her eyes full of sadness at the thought of losing Kaylna to the wilderness again. “What you have done for Cornelius is nothing short of a miracle. What Caesar said is true – we need you to help train our young apes, to make them confident and strong. And I do not consider you a traitor, no matter what other apes say. You may have not been able to stop Koba’s war, but you did not start it, either.”

Cornelius was looking up at Kaylna now, his young eyes and hands beseeching.

“Please, Kaylna… stay here? Stay with me?”

Kaylna grunted as she contemplated the choice in front of her. Looking between the three chimpanzees as her fur stood on end. Her own anxieties returning as tried to think of any excuse she could to deny their request, but coming up with nothing. “Fine. I will remain with the colony. But you get to tell the other apes.” she signed to her king which caused him to nod and smile.

“Apes together strong.” he replied as he embraced her, like he had once done to Koba.

“Might want to remind them of that.” the bonobo muttered, seeing Maurice leading Rocket and Blue Eyes back towards them as the rest of the colony followed.

Rocket glared at Kaylna, the sting of Ash’s death felt all too fresh upon seeing the old bonobo sitting close to Cornelia and Cornelius. He trusted Caesar, but he did not trust Kaylna. The angry chimp could see Blue Eyes hesitation to approach out of the corner of his eye. He reached for the gun on his back and aimed it at the bonobo.

Kaylna growled and got ready to jump out of the way, until she remembered that Cornelius was behind her, if she jumped, he could get hurt. Her growl got louder as she bared her fangs and crouched lower, ready to charge instead of jump. She could handle the pain of being shot as long as Cornelius was unharmed. She owed Cornelia that much…

 “ROCKET! NO!”

 Cornelia shouted before her husband could. Rocket was a good-hearted and loyal ape, but sometimes he let his anger get the better of him and the grief and anger following the death of his son Ash would be with him always.

 “She is a traitor, like her brother!” Rocket snarled, but he lowered the gun in obedience to the queen. Caesar stepped forward with a warning growl of his own, and Rocket slowly offered a hand in supplication to the king.

 “No. To Cornelia,” Caesar said, his voice stern but kind. After all, it was the queen in whose presence he had drawn the gun. She swiped his fingers quickly, for such moments were always awkward for her and she sympathized with his grief.

 She addressed the gathered apes.

 “Koba turned against the colony, yes. But Kaylna is no traitor. She followed Koba because he was her kin, but she was never violent against any ape. And she has helped me with Cornelius more than anyone ever could. Your brother is beginning to heal, and it is because of Kaylna’s help.”

 That last part was addressed to Blue Eyes, eldest son of Cornelia and Caesar.

 “I want Kaylna to come back to the colony and continue to help Cornelius. Of course, we will bring this matter up properly and discuss it with you and the rest of the council. But I ask you all, please let her return. The health of our young prince depends upon her.”

Deep in the forest, a lone bonobo called Kaylna sat perched in a tree, watching as a baby deer stumbled closer to her trap. Hunting without the colony had been difficult, if not for Caesar and Cornelia's mercy she would not have survived the harsh winters. The King and Queen hadn't approved of her self imposed exile, but she couldn't deal with the whispers of the others. 'Traitor's sister' they called her and they were right. She had supported Koba even after he had killed Ash.

An explosion brought her out of her thoughts and she quickly abandoned her hunt and ran to join the fight. She quickly threw her spear and impaled a human from behind who had been taking aim at a younger ape. "Go." she grunted as she saw a face she hadn't seen since the war began. A large gorilla named Red, loyal to Koba, but now following the humans that Koba despised. She shoved the human corpse off of her spear just as Red moved to give a human an explosive.

She snarled and lunged at Red, throwing the larger ape off balance before the human could grab another weapon. The pair grunted as they rolled down a hill, trading bites and punches. As they hit the bottom of the hill, Kaylna jumped back from Red to get some distance to attack just as Caesar arrived with reinforcements. Kaylna grunted and picked up a fallen gun, pointing it at Red and letting out a loud cry to call Caesar.

The ape king appeared and noticed Kaylna holding Red at gun point. The alpha nodded, "Thank you, Kaylna." he spoke. "Your arrival may have stopped many deaths."

Kaylna grunted and shook her head, dropping the weapon and moving to retreat back to her home, only stopping when Caesar spoke again.

"Come back with us. We have to talk. Cornelia misses you too." he told her.

Kaylna turned back toward him and timidly followed her king, ignoring the whispers of 'traitor' thrown her way by the colony.

Back at the caves where the apes were now camped, the ape queen Cornelia was feeling very worried indeed, and the reason for that worry was her beloved younger son, Cornelius.

 Koba’s treachery and the conflict it had launched both apes and humans into was hard on everyone, but most of all on the very young.  Koba had been like a kindly uncle to the sons of Cornelia and Caesar, until his hatred of the humans had driven him to madness. And now the youngest prince has gone from being a happy, curious little ape to one of the most anxious and introverted children the queen had ever seen, and it was breaking her heart.

 Her older son Blue Eyes had also suffered greatly, particularly over the death of his best friend Ash and the mind-numbing horror of believing that his father Caesar was dead for such a long time, But he was a young adult now and very strong and resilient, and he was now finding happiness with his new mate, Lake. Perhaps one day the young couple would even have children of their own.

 “Why won’t you go out and play with the other young apes, my son?” she asked Cornelius, who looked up from the sticks he was arranging into little piles and frowned.

 “There might be humans, or evil apes out there, Mother.”

 “Just outside the caves should be safe enough, and Maurice will be there to watch over you all,” Cornelia said gently, but the little prince just bowed his head and went back to sorting his sticks. Cornelia turned her attention to looking towards the cave entrance, wondering when Caesar would return.

 She soon heard familiar footsteps, and she smiled with relief to know Caesar was back. Her sharp ears, however, soon detected a second footfall, and she wondered if Rocket or one of the others was with him.

 The queen nearly fell over backwards when she saw who was accompanying Caesar. It wasn’t Rocket, or Blue Eyes, or anyone else she expected.

 “Kaylna!” she exclaimed, happy to see her old friend but concerned as well.

Innocents in the Apocalypse

Iris frowned again when she heard the noise too…this made her nervous" Koba…did you hear that?“ She asked cautiously tensions started to rise.

Most the other apes began to notice the noise as well making them on high alert, even Heather began to hear making her spooked greatly” M-Mommy…“ Her voice trembled as she clutched to Cornelia.

The only who didn’t hear it was Suzanne.. and frankly she seemed to be lost in own world to take notice of the reactions.

Koba gave a grunt of affirmation to Iris, his senses tuned to the sound, trying in vain to discern what it was. The call definitely sounded ape-like - but no ape could make that loud a sound! It was not machine, and not human, either…

Cornelia stroked Heather’s hair, trying to reassure her and the fussing Rory at the same time. She gestured to get Suzanne and Cornelius’s attention.

As the highest ranking ape present, the decision as to what to do next must be hers.

Koba, as was proper, looked to his queen next.

‘We must all go back to the village, and call a meeting of the council. Caesar must know what has happened,’ Cornelia signed.

It took a while to get Suzanne out her gaze, Iris came over to gently shake the young girl" Suzanne? Suzanne?“ She signed to the young girl only for her to blink and look at the scarred woman confused.

Iris had seen something like this before…with trauma victims… mostly with herself… Suzanne looked there but not completely.

” its ok…it ok.. “ Iris tried to reassure her, but Suzanne just looked away.

Some time later the council gathered leaving the kids to be watched by Lake until they where dine, Suzanne was still quiet while holding Cornelius.

Cornelia and the others who had been down by the river related what they had seen and heard to Caesar, who was frowning deeply.

‘We must investigate,’ he signed to the members of the council. ‘But must be careful, take spears and go in large group. Whoever we find might be dangerous.’

Over in the kids’ group, Cornelius reached up to touch Suzanne’s face. Young though he was, he sensed something wasn’t right with his big sister. Holly the young orangutan sensed it too and touched Suzanne’s arm gently to get her attention.

‘What’s wrong?’ she signed to her friend. ‘Anything I can do to help?’

Suzanne didn’t make response at first but slowly to look at Holly with broken eyes.

“ can you make the fear go away” Suzanne signed as she played with Cornelius fur"…because i don’t think I’ll ever feel safe…with them out there" the young girl may seem to be strong but in fact, she was extremely terrified…not only the soldiers maybe finding them…but also the mad ape placing his wrath on her for what she did to him.

Holly looked sober for a moment, but tried to reassure Suzanne nonetheless.

‘Caesar is brave, he will protect us,’ she signed. ‘You are his child now, just like Cornelius here. He is a good and peaceful king, but he will fight to protect us all, especially his family.’

Meanwhile, a group of warrior scouts had moved off into the forest, Caesar himself leading them with Rocket and Koba at his side. The gorilla guards had stayed to protect the village, with Luca as their leader. The mighty gorilla kept his eyes on the young ones, his protective instincts roused. 

Cornelia had been left in charge of the village while her husband had gone off with the scouts, and came over to Suzanne, a look of worry on her kind face.

Suzanne just looked down at her hand the whole time…tracing the old burn scar that had violently placed upon her hand. She had become very quiet since speaking to Holly.

Iris noticed the reactions of the young girl…her distant sad look…it was familiar to her…she had this look herself when she was her age.

Iris went over to sit in front of the young teen gently taking her hand in hers making Suzanne look at her blankly" It’s ok to be scared Suzanne…many are" she replied before sighing" I know I was for a long time while I was growing up" She told her gently.

Suzanne raised brow at this" I’ve heard stories about you…you where vicious" iris chuckled at this as she rubbed her eyes" besides your an adult" Suzanne replied again quieter Suzanne adults get scared just like children do…“ Her eyes got but sad” and back then most us had to be vicious to survive…“

Cornelia came over and gave her older daughter a reassuring smile. 

‘Yes, Iris right. Adults can get scared, too. Sometimes even I get scared. But I try not to let little ones know it.’

As she signed these words, she suddenly heard another noise. Like... somebody taking a huge piece of wood and knocking on the trees.

Whatever could be doing that?

The queen while quite shocked at Iris being pregnant again was also excited as a smiled grew on her face as she went over to her.

Heather noticed the talk of babies went over to the older females at looked at all the curious" where do babies come from?“ The little girl asked with her big innocent eyes making all the older apes their freeze and dumbfounded.

Meanwhile Luca couldn’t his excitement in while he was in his shift and revealed his news to everyone. ________________________________________________________________

Everyone was excited and happy to hear the news of the new baby, and all sorts of talk was happening among the apes - whether it was likely to be a boy or a girl, when exactly it would be born, etc.

Some of the older female apes looked astounded when Heather asked where babies came from, and a few uttered amused chuffs at the child’s complete innocence. 

Cornelia, who was sitting next to Iris, smiled at her adopted daughter.

‘One day I tell you,  but it is far too soon,’ she signed. ‘Suffice to say for now, babies come from love.’

Heather at this went over and touched Iris belly" There’s a baby in here" Heather asked.

The little girl actually didn’t really know where babies came from due her parents being killed before they could tell her and because she never seen a pregnant woman before.

Iris nodded" yes my belly will grow as months go by and then once the baby is ready to come out it will be born" She told Heather softly as she held her tiny hand.

Suzanne meanwhile was shocked to hear Iris was pregnant…she never thought it would be possible that a ape could get a woman pregnant.

Later during the day Suzanne didn’t really know how to react around the boys after what Holly and the other girls told her, she felt a bit awkward she sat next to a tree as the white tails played along with Heather, she saw Heather come running towards to the young teenager saw the little girl come rushing over to her with a smile but it quickly faded and was replaced with horror

“ Your bleeding!!” The little girl screamed.

Suzanne was confused at first but then looked where she was pointing which was between her legs and her face pale in horror and she soon stood up screaming.

Hearing the children’s screams, apes started rushing up to Suzanne. Among them were the healers, including Etumbe’s daughter Maya, who brought soft leaves to mop the blood up.

Luckily the wise bonobo had heard of such things happening to humans. She had had enough talks to Ellie about the physical differences between humans and apes, and how how human and ape males and females came into maturity.

‘It all right,’ Maya signed to the alarmed apes and to the human girls. ‘Ellie say this happen to all human females. It kind of like first heat for ape girls. I take you to Iris. She probably the best person to talk to about this since Ellie is not here.’

Heather had to be calmed by Cornelia who went over to pick up the little girl" mommy" she cried in her arms.

Suzanne turned bright red when Maya mentioned she was going through" heat"…and pretty much all the village witness it…she wanted to crawl in a hole and die embrassment.

Suzanne hid inside her hooded sweater as Maya guided her to Iris and Luca’s hut, though they where also embrasssed do being inturrupted from a “intamite” moment but nothing extreme.

Cornelia comforted little Heather and tried to explain that Suzanne was not hurt, she was just growing up, while Caesar picked up little Cornelius and Rory, who wanted to see what all the fuss was about. He cradled his two youngest sons and tried to distract them with a type of rattle-toy Blue Eyes had made.

Maya gently guided Suzanne towards Iris.

‘I am sorry to interrupt,’ she signed to Iris and Luca. ‘But Suzanne needs help… she is growing up and it is best if human explain this to her rather than ape.’

“ Ohhhh” Iris said as she got up and we river to the embarrassed Suzanne “ Did?…did you mother ever explain to you about what you period was…before she died…”Iris signed to her Suzanne looked at her and shook her head.

The queen while quite shocked at Iris being pregnant again was also excited as a smiled grew on her face as she went over to her.

Heather noticed the talk of babies went over to the older females at looked at all the curious" where do babies come from?“ The little girl asked with her big innocent eyes making all the older apes their freeze and dumbfounded.

The little girl actually didn’t really know where babies came from due her parents being killed before they could tell her and because she never seen a pregnant woman before.

The queen while quite shocked at Iris being pregnant again was also excited as a smiled grew on her face as she went over to her.

Heather noticed the talk of babies went over to the older females at looked at all the curious" where do babies come from?“ The little girl asked with her big innocent eyes making all the older apes their freeze and dumbfounded.

Meanwhile Luca couldn’t his excitement in while he was in his shift and revealed his news to everyone. ________________________________________________________________

Everyone was excited and happy to hear the news of the new baby, and all sorts of talk was happening among the apes - whether it was likely to be a boy or a girl, when exactly it would be born, etc.

Some of the older female apes looked astounded when Heather asked where babies came from, and a few uttered amused chuffs at the child’s complete innocence. 

Cornelia, who was sitting next to Iris, smiled at her adopted daughter.

‘One day I tell you,  but it is far too soon,’ she signed. ‘Suffice to say for now, babies come from love.’

The little girl actually didn’t really know where babies came from due her parents being killed before they could tell her and because she never seen a pregnant woman before.

Luckily the wise bonobo had heard of such things happening to humans. She had had enough talks to Ellie about the physical differences between humans and apes, and how how human and ape males and females came into maturity.

‘It all right,’ Maya signed to the alarmed apes and to the human girls. ‘Ellie say this happen to all human females. It kind of like first heat for ape girls. I take you to Iris. She probably the best person to talk to about this since Ellie is not here.’

She knew how to make a warm drink with herbs and berries that the healers had shown her how to concoct, and she made some for Suzanne, carrying it over in a cup made of bark. “ boys are weird…well the ones around me recently have been… Holly says it because they like me but…I don’t know…” Suzanne just had a hard time believing that they would like her when there where many pretty apes around.

The queen while quite shocked at Iris being pregnant again was also excited as a smiled grew on her face as she went over to her.

Heather noticed the talk of babies went over to the older females at looked at all the curious" where do babies come from?“ The little girl asked with her big innocent eyes making all the older apes their freeze and dumbfounded.

Meanwhile Luca couldn’t his excitement in while he was in his shift and revealed his news to everyone. ________________________________________________________________

Everyone was excited and happy to hear the news of the new baby, and all sorts of talk was happening among the apes - whether it was likely to be a boy or a girl, when exactly it would be born, etc.

Some of the older female apes looked astounded when Heather asked where babies came from, and a few uttered amused chuffs at the child’s complete innocence. 

Cornelia, who was sitting next to Iris, smiled at her adopted daughter.

‘One day I tell you,  but it is far too soon,’ she signed. ‘Suffice to say for now, babies come from love.’

The little girl actually didn’t really know where babies came from due her parents being killed before they could tell her and because she never seen a pregnant woman before.

Iris nodded" yes my belly will grow as months go by and then once the baby is ready to come out it will be born" She told Heather softly as she held her tiny hand.

Suzanne meanwhile was shocked to hear Iris was pregnant…she never thought it would be possible that a ape could get a woman pregnant.

Later during the day Suzanne didn’t really know how to react around the boys after what Holly and the other girls told her, she felt a bit awkward she sat next to a tree as the white tails played along with Heather, she saw Heather come running towards to the young teenager saw the little girl come rushing over to her with a smile but it quickly faded and was replaced with horror

“ Your bleeding!!” The little girl screamed.

Suzanne was confused at first but then looked where she was pointing which was between her legs and her face pale in horror and she soon stood up screaming.

Hearing the children’s screams, apes started rushing up to Suzanne. Among them were the healers, including Etumbe’s daughter Maya, who brought soft leaves to mop the blood up.

Luckily the wise bonobo had heard of such things happening to humans. She had had enough talks to Ellie about the physical differences between humans and apes, and how how human and ape males and females came into maturity.

‘It all right,’ Maya signed to the alarmed apes and to the human girls. ‘Ellie say this happen to all human females. It kind of like first heat for ape girls. I take you to Iris. She probably the best person to talk to about this since Ellie is not here.’
