I gotta admit, the cold open that was her (and Hal) with her family really got to me, as someone with a large extended family. It felt like it rhymed with my childhood memories of family dinners with all my cousins, aunts, and uncles.

inxolotle being the navika'an word for remember being derived from xolotl, aztec psychopomp and the twin of quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent. azune talking about forgetting as a kind of death and thus theoretically remembrance as life and rebirth. azune using a word derived from the name of a real world mythological psychopomp on a sundered stone made from the bone of an in-universe psychopomp and awakening a dragon in the process. xolotl also being the god of fire and lightning, azune's father saying there was no ladder out for them except through fire and storm. also, xolotl guilding the sun every night into the afterlife and therefore connecting him directly with the idea of sunset

Hal and Thaisha are not divorced. I definitely thought so at the start of the campaign, but by the time we get the end of the Conference, it's clear to me that they aren't. for one thing, they were never married so in a literal sense they can't be divorced. but more to the spirit of what people mean when they call them divorced, I personally don't believe Hal and Thaisha's romantic relationship ever ended. she still has a designated room at his house despite having a family home in the same city. they still canonically sleep together. and throughout the Convergence we can see how deeply they still love each other, through words and actions. I can understand why people assume they're divorced/broken up. their relationship decidedly functions very differently from what is average and conventional. if I had to put specific terms to it, I'd call it a long-distance open relationship. but that feels rather clinical and like an attempt to shove it into an easily understood digestible box, which seems silly to do considering they're a completely different species with a completely different culture from a completely different world. whatever the case, I love the two of them and what they share for its unique view of what romance can look like. and I'm excited to see how their relationship develops, as well as their individual relationships with other characters

Alex Ward’s exploration of Occtis is so fresh and fascinating. He specifically said (I forget if this is from a cooldown or other ep) that he wanted to explore the concept of undeath without vampirism. Brennan took that conceptual baseball and knocked it out of the park.

No hunger, no drive, just an absence of life. Never fully tired but never fully rested. Wearing and being your own corpse, pain but no urgency, discomfort with no cure.

This is also balanced with who Occtis is a person. He constantly jump-ropes across the line of victim and hyper capable specialist. He’s an anxious kid, but he also molded himself into the shape of very dangerous people and his moral compass isn’t exactly calibrated right (being raised in a family like his will do that). He learned necromancy for the express purpose of being powerful, but doesn’t seem to understand the point of that power other than having it.

Not quite alive, not simply dead. Not a regular noble, but not quite a normal wizard either. In between with absolutely no one who shares his situation in any capacity.

I want to eat this idea and execution with a spoon it’s so good.
