Legitimate *pro bono legal services* don’t exist without a good reason. In a few of the exmormon groups I’m in you’ll see regular posts saying stuff like “Look what my lawyer sent me today!” with a pic of their resignation confirmation letter from the church.

Everyone should be able to choose their religious beliefs and community, and leave any that they find does not work for them.

Ex mormon here - this guy’s legit. The Mormon holds your files for eternity, and when they find out that you’ve moved to a new area, they will send members and missionaries from that region to harass you. I know this sounds like dystopic bullshit, but they followed my father through three moves before he rejoined the church.

Also ex mormon here who used this. It’s a ridiculously helpful service that is incredibly easy to use. They keep you updated throughout the whole process, and it’s totally worth it since the church doesn’t get to keep all your private information and pass it around once you resign :)

A few years ago the church started requiring some people to get their resignation notarized (quit Mormon will still help walk you through that, it’s just an extra step you have to take when the process used to be incredibly simple). It doesn’t affect everyone and they tend to make men notarize more than they make wonen do it (gotta keep those priesthood holders in the church, y'know)

and also know that getting children under the age of 18 off church records is ridiculously difficult, the church’s lawyers kick and scream and drag their feet to keep them registered as members of the church. It’s like, sure at 8 years old this child was old enough to pledge ten percent of their income to you for the rest of their lives, but at 15 they’re not old enough to say “nah, I’m out”, it’s disgusting.

And one last thing, if you’re born into the church you don’t go on church records when you’re baptised at 8, you get put on church records after you get your baby blessing when you’re just a few weeks old. So if you have children and then leave the church, even the unbaptized ones will need to be removed from church records if they’ve been blessed. And blessed but unbaptized children are the most difficult to get off church records even though the child themselves have not made a conscious (if coerced) decision to join the church.

But y'know, totally not a cult.

I realize what my blog is but I left the church like 5 years ago and I did it on my own and I hated that. I had to use a wiki how article to figure out how to leave.

My mental health and happiness is more important than any religion, and that applies to everyone.

I respect people who decide to stay in the church, and I'm not trying to say that everyone should leave. If it works for you and you are happy, great. But not everyone is and the knowledge of how to leave is not easy to find. Everyone should have the option to stay or leave and know how.

I don't want to be stuck with a decision I made when I was 7 and lacked any actual knowledge or faith. I only did it because I saw my brother get baptized and I wanted to do whatever my older brothers did. I got baptized on my 8th birthday, so I literally made the decision when I was 7. No one should be stuck with a decision they made as a child.

I think it’s funny how Mormon God was like “look polygamy is super important and I am telling you my followers to practice it even in the face of persecution” and then 40 years later Congress said Utah wouldn’t be given statehood as long as the LDS practiced polygamy and Mormon God was like “Ok tell everyone I changed my mind”

I mean the whole damn point of the Nativity story is that the supposed son of God (interpret Jesus how you fucking want, of course) was born to a couple of poor, exhausted peasants in the stable for the inn, and his first bed was a feeding trough for animals. That would nowadays be like a poor couple where the mother gives birth in a parking garage behind the motel because they couldn’t find a better place and nobody else would take them in. It’s a pretty gritty setting, and the idea is that God was reborn in some of the rock-bottom lowest circumstances. The only thing majestic was all the angels and shit, and of course motherly love

I get that a lot of the art portraying Madonna and Child as fabulously wealthy europeans in splendid robes and golden light was meant to glorify God + whichever nobility was sponsoring the artist, and while of course it’s genuinely beautiful art, it just always struck me as horribly missing the point, which is that the supposed son of God started in incredibly humble circumstances, among the kind of people that everyone else looks down on

God knew about your sexuality before you did. He was the first to accept you. He created you and your body. He knew what he was doing.
