I feel like Ilya would definitely get some “ball and chain” type of comments regarding Shane and at one point he ends up in a group of guys who start ragging on him when he's thinking about heading out early, calling him whipped, joking about Shane having him on a tight leash, and Ilya ends up just saying, genuinely confused, “do you guys not like your wives?” There’s complete silence for a second before Ilya continues, “maybe you should give them the chance to find someone who actually enjoys spending time with them." And then he goes home to his husband, who also happens to be his favourite person in the world.

Why We Need a Queer History of the Holocaust

For LGBTQ history month, HWO are very pleased to republish Anna Hájková's piece on the need for a queer history of the Holocaust.

Homophobia has had a far-reaching impact on historical memory. At a basic level, there are next to no queer Jews in Holocaust histories. If you find any, they are usually deviant figures. But more importantly, homophobic prejudice has come to shape all the oral history collections of Holocaust survivors around the world. The large USC Shoah Foundation has over 52,000 interviews with Jewish survivors; next to none of them speak about same-sex desire. This does not mean that none of them were queer – I know for a fact that some of them were. But they did not dare to bring it up in the interview given the heteronormative framing of the inquiry. With missing testimonies, it is as if these people never lived and haven’t left a trace, which for survivors of a genocide is a devastating fate. [...] Let me be honest, even in the context of Holocaust studies this is a hard research. Some people will tell you that queer history is irrelevant and should not be written about. They believe that homosexuality is dishonorable to the reputation of Holocaust victims. Sadly, these lines of enquiry have sometimes led to painful personal attacks on myself; I have had my professional path, research integrity, sexual orientation and family history attacked. But more often, I have been able to change people’s opinions and to show why should we strive for a less judgmental and more inclusive history.

My dear lgbt+ kids, 

Here’s a hug (or a high-five if you prefer) for everyone who is deeply interested in sex as a topic but not as an activity. 

Maybe you are interested in sex from a biological or psychological perspective (sexual health, relationship dynamics, cultural differences etc.) or from a creative standpoint (reading, writing, drawing, watching sex scenes), or maybe it tickles your collectors brain (in a „I’d like an itemized list of all sex positions, no I do not want to try any of them, I just like lists“ way) - but in either case, you are not sexually active and you do not wish to be. 

People who are not interested in having sex are often assumed to be immature, as if it automatically means you are a 7 year old in their „eww kissing gives you cooties“ phase. You are assigned a childlike innocence, you are presumed to have no understanding of how sex works or that it even exists…  But in reality you may actually have more theoretical knowledge on sex than your peers do! You just happen to not want the hands-on experience. 

People may also automatically assume you’re disgusted or even deeply afraid of sex and feel like they need to tip-toe around the topic with you - which can create a really unpleasant disconnect between your internal self-image and the way others treat you. In reality, you may love to talk about sex and wish you could discuss it with others freely without having to fight assumptions. There’s a loneliness in this. 

„Interested but not personally participating“ is not as strange a combination as people may think. People really do that with lots of activities! People can be super into watching sports but not play any sports themselves. People can love to learn about dogs but would personally never get one. It shouldn’t be that surprising that it can apply to sex too. 

There’s nothing wrong or weird about you. You basically just love basketball but do not play it. A fully normal, valid thing.
