personally I am of the opinion that vegans who are like “the way our food system currently works under capitalism on a large scale is exceptionally cruel to all animals including humans and is not sustainable, so I’m doing what I can to make the most ethical choices available to me about what I eat and encourage others to do the same” are generally very reasonable people who I agree with in spades. but vegans who seem to think human beings are not themselves animals who are ultimately also part of the food chain but instead some kind of other paternalistic higher entity that can never engage in ethical and sustainable hunting practices (and especially the fringe I’ve seen who think other carnivorous animal predators are also evil and need to be eliminated) are people I regard as foolish at best if not actively anti-indigenous and racist

My child, who spends their entire life being transfered from home to car to school and back, and is not allowed to leave the house or talk to anyone and can only in their wildest dreams imagine a life free from constant surveillance, is very sad. Obviously they're dumb and lazy, like all kids these days.

kind of a tangent but i recently went to a bowling alley with my friend i'm 19 he's 18 and the woman at the door didn't want to let us in because there was a sign saying under-18s needed adult supervision. everything got cleared up and we were able to go bowl, but i'm still so mad about the fact that kids need adult supervision to go to a bowling alley and arcade. like okay maybe young kids should have supervision but what do you mean middle and high schoolers need to hold mommy's hand while they play video games. kids aren't just addicted to their phones because phones are addicting, we're addicted to our phones because there's nothing else to fucking do

I deleted the photo for phone storage but I was at a public square kind of space in Cleveland, there were restaurants all around and a little open air market and food trucks and a local band playing. Some flower beds. Benches. a nice spot to sit, hang out, enjoy the outdoors and get some yummy food. And there was a sign saying anyone under 18 there after 4 pm. had to be accompanied by an adult. There was a posted minimum age the adult had to be. There was a posted minor-to-adult ratio. what's more, the sign explicitly made the exception for underage employees of nearby establishments, provided they were there during scheduled work hours (they'll take your labor, but won't suffer you to enjoy the fruits of it)

When I was "under 18" I had a job and friends from different parts of town and options for transportation. I volunteered at a food bank. I had an income and the desire to spend it. and I would have been told to leave if I had the audacity to go hang out in a community space without a grown up.

My parents made the point that teens often cause a Ruckus which can be unpleasant to be around. which is true but 1) adults are just as capable of being a public nuisance and 2) if they can enforce this rule, surely they can enforce rules such as "no swearing" or "no loud music" or "no roughhousing" or whatever else they're afraid will happen if a teenager goes out in public.

It's sad.

One of the reasons we were so adamant that we not the leave area even after we outgrew the old house is that it is an are where kids still free-range. My 8 year old can walk to the shop and buy a snack by herself or some groceries for me. The kids wander to each other's houses and yards pretty freely. There are lots of places she can be, to learn how to be in those places. She has a large area of freedom of movement.

If we want adults who know how to adult, we have to let them start practicing doing things early. Yes, even if they sometimes make noises. Yes, even if they aren't spending money. Because they are people. People need to be able to go places, and talk to people, and do stuff, and make choices.

Children are people.

Elliot Page’s role in The Odyssey is to be unwillingly sacrificed within the first five minutes of his appearance and THAT’S the “complex and interesting” role that people have claimed was personally gifted to him by Nolan for transitioning into a man?? This is about Christopher Nolan’s movie adaptation of the Odyssey, not The Aeneid book.

I get that Sinon is an important and complex character, but when we’re discussing the context of Elliot Page playing him and how his character was handled in Nolan’s adaptation:

1) His character doesn’t exist in Homer’s Odyssey and was taken from Virgil’s Aeneid and given to him instead of giving him an actual character in the Odyssey. If someone were to visit the original source material, his role will not even be there.

2) He is essentially the dead wife of the plot, and is also one of the youngest characters. He haunts the narrative, which is a pretty common role given to women so as to not actually write them into the plot, but please do keep telling me that there is absolutely no transphobic or misogynistic biases towards why Elliot Page was specifically selected to play Sinon.

3) He still only gets a combined amount of about five minutes of screentime, and considering this is the most notable role he’s recieved since coming out 5+ years ago… I don’t think this is proof that transitioning has benefited his career. Every time Elliot Page is even mentioned by name, the internet goes on a horrifically transphobic crusade for months until he’s forced back into obscurity. His acting career has objectively tanked since coming out.

4) Elliot Page has already worked with Chrisopher Nolan and was given a (noteably) bigger role in Inception pre-transition. Christopher Nolan did not “wait” for Elliot Page to transition (whatever the fuck that means), the two already knew each other from previous projects.

Edit: Personally, the only real win to me is that a trans man got to play a cis man without his transness being considered an issue, but the way in which Nolan went about it felt more like throwing Elliot Page a bone while benefiting from the outrage caused by Elliot Page simply existing, and instead of celebrating the small win that trans men received, every single side of the internet decided to rip into him and either call him a mentally ill woman or a privileged man benefiting from misogyny.

I (a trans woman) recently started coming out to my peers and at first I felt real defeated; one of my best friends said he’d deadname me and the other said he wouldn’t defend me against the first and it’s made it real nerve wracking trying to come out to anyone anymore. But today I decided to tell my brother, another Christian man whom I was scared to get a similar response.
