Right now, LGBTQ+ refugees in Kakuma Refugee Camp are suffering in silence. Many of us have been forced to flee our countries because of who we are only to face homophobia, starvation, and homelessness even here.

We sleep outside without proper shelters.

We struggle for food and clean water every day.

We have no access to work, healthcare, or safety.

Sharon, @holyvirtuesoldier, used to have a campaign aimed at helping her and her fellow queer refugees at Kenya's Kakuma Refugee Camp, but the campaign had to be closed due to problems in running it.

In Kakuma Refugee Camp, life has always been difficult, but today, it has become unbearable.

READ THIS NOTE NOTE ABOUT KAKUMA REFUGEE CAMP TO GET A CLEAR PICTURE OF OUR SITUATIONS🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈.

Kakuma refugee camp, located in the northwest of Kenya, has been home to tens of thousands of refugees from different parts of the world, including a large number of LGBTIQ individuals who have fled persecution in their home countries. While the camp was designed to provide a safe haven for those fleeing violence and persecution, the reality for LGBTIQ refugees in Kakuma is far from that.

For LGBTIQ refugees, Kakuma can be a place of intense fear and danger. In many of their home countries, homosexuality is criminalized and can be punishable by imprisonment or even death. When they arrive in Kakuma, they are often faced with the same discrimination and violence that they were trying to escape. The camp is overcrowded, with limited resources and services, which makes it difficult for LGBTIQ refugees to find safety and support.

The camp's environment is not welcoming to LGBTIQ refugees, who often face harassment and violence from other refugees and even from the security personnel tasked with protecting them. They are often subjected to physical and verbal abuse, and their safety is not guaranteed. Reports of beatings, rape, and other forms of violence against LGBTIQ refugees in Kakuma are common, and they are often afraid to report these incidents for fear of retaliation.

The lack of privacy in the camp is another major issue for LGBTIQ refugees. They are forced to share living spaces with strangers, and their sexual orientation or gender identity is often exposed, making them vulnerable to harassment and violence. They are also denied the right to form relationships or families, which is a basic human right. LGBTIQ refugees in Kakuma often suffer from depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues, as they are forced to live in constant fear.

We, a group of trans refugees living in Kakuma Refugee Camp, are reaching out to you with heavy hearts and urgent needs. Right now, many of us are facing starvation, lack of access to ARVs, unpaid medical bills, and no access to basic essentials like lubricants and hygiene products.

We ran from death, only to find more suffering. In most African countries. LGBT 🏳️‍🌈refugees like me live in constant fear—homeless, starving, and hunted. The streets are our beds, violence our daily reality. The world looks away as we are beaten, arrested, and left to die in silence. Aid is a distant dream, safety an illusion.

I am one of them. I live this nightmare every day. How much longer must we suffer before the world sees us? Before someone cares?😞

I reach out to you, and seek for our assistance to help us survive and go through challenges days that we face. 🙏

AS ATRANS RIGHTS DEFENDER I THOUGHT IF WE COULD DISCUSS ABOUT HIV SPREAD.

Intentionally infecting someone with HIV is wrong and illegal. Everyone has the right to know the truth about their partner’s health before making decisions. If someone is living with HIV, they should take responsibility by informing their partners and taking medication to stay healthy. Hiding such important information can ruin lives.

Always practice safe relationships, get tested, and encourage honesty. If you suspect someone is spreading HIV on purpose, seek help from health professionals or authorities. Let’s create awareness and protect each other!

In Kenya, deliberately transmitting HIV is a criminal offense under two key laws:

Sexual Offences Act of 2006 This law criminalizes the deliberate transmission of life-threatening sexually transmitted diseases, including Hiv

HIV and AIDS Prevention and Control Act of 2006 This Act also addresses the intentional transmission of HIV

Both laws aim to protect individuals and promote public health by discouraging the deliberate spread of HIV. However, their enforcement has been debated. Some argue that criminalizing HIV transmission may increase stigma and discourage people from getting tested or disclosing their status.

I WISH I COULD GIVE YOU MY PAIN JUST FOR ONE MOMENT. NOT TO HURT YOU BUT TO MAKE YOU UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH WE SUFFER IN THE REFUGEE CAMP AS LGBTIQ'S.

Generally life in the Refugee Camp is extremely hard for the LGBTQIA community due to rampant HOMOPHOBIA within the camp. This is witnessed through daily attacks by homophobic fellow refugee's and the co-host Community.LGBTQI refugees live under great fear whereby we're being targeted by the homophobes; this has resulted in several injuries where these homophobes ambush when armed with machetes. Over time, properties have been lost. In addition, sexual harassment has also been witnessed here in the refugee camp to the LGBTQIA community. Lesbians on several occasions have been raped not once but twice. Beyond any reasonable doubt, this has made Refugee Camp the most hostile land for LGBTQIA Community.

Furthermore, the LGBTQIA Community lives under great suffering due to the fact they are willing to work to earn a living but failed to get employment opportunities due to their sexual orientation. This has made life so much harder for the minority group, being marginalized amidst this arid area of the Refugee Camp. We have also faced various attack from homophobes and also illness related to poor standard of living.Even so, despite all the misery, we try to find some time to kill stress when celebrating official LGBTQIA days and festivals. Below is when we celebrate the pride day and also had some couple officially get married while maintaining a low profile.
