"Do you ever wish you could come back to life?" you ask as you lay on your bed, headphones in place. Weeks have past. You've lost count how many conversations you've managed with Levi. "Like… a rebirth or reincarnation, or something?"

You swear you hear a laugh, as faint as it may be. "Wouldn't — know — how to live — now."

"Because you're too old?"

"Brat."

The name calling comes over with conviction. You can't help but burst into genuine laughter.

"I would show you all the modern day stuff, don't worry," you tease.

"Why — stay — in here?" Stations flicker. "With me?"

In truth, you know the answer: to occupy yourself with a spirit that isn't of this earth means that you can take a little breather from the real world. Levi brings a comfort no living human can rival — he's funny, he engages, he's unapologetically himself.

You've told him a dozen times that you can stop this, leave him alone, if he wants peace. Levi claims peace is a luxury people like him so rarely get.

In another life, he had friends. Hopes. Wants.

So you listen, too.

And you hope you give him as much comfort as Levi gives you.

You laugh as you walk around the house, following the strength of Levi's voice. You can tell he's leading you to the kitchen — the drop in temperature glides down the hallway at a leisurely pace.

"I said — go on."

"Go on where?"

"Outside," Levi immediately responds. "With — living." When you stop moving, the cold does, too. "I'll be — right here."

Your eyes shift to the window. The sun shines. The leaves return to green. With a blink, you glance back to where you think Levi may be standing. "Maybe this weekend."

"Promise — me."

You huff.

"…I promise."

Levi faces away from you, desperate to create some sort of distance—to make you understand that he is not the one you want. Never will be.

“What do you want, Levi?”

His chest hurts. “I want you to leave.”

He isn’t unaware of the way you subtly flinch, of the way you step back.

But here, against you (unrelenting, tireless you), words are his only weapon.

“No you don’t.”

And then you…

(Beautiful, soft you.)

…you’re on your knees in front of him, taking his palm into your own, nuzzling, kissing; unveiling the burning truth he keeps at bay.

For days, you spend every possible moment in your bedroom. Going to work and running home feels trivial when faced with a possible entity living in your house.

For hours, you keep your headphones cemented to your head. Not every voice that comes through is his, but Levi is the most consistent. He's not sure when he died. Everything is a blur. He hasn't always haunted this house.

You ask if he can see you.

At first, he doesn't answer. Acts aloof. Changes the subject.

So you ask again.

Your nightstand lamp flickers. The air by your shoulder chills.

"Yes."

I remember you mentioned your ao3 username is inspired by your poem about endometriosis and while I'm not sure if I have endo, I definitely have painful periods and I'd love to read it if you don't mind sharing!

First of all, sending hugs. I know how painful periods suck, big time!! I hope you get some relief soon.

And re: my AO3 username - it wasn't inspired by the pain or daily living, per se, but actually by my major endo surgery that was going to save my life. (I had Stage 4 and it was to the point where I would have likely died in the next few years from how bad it'd gotten.) I went to an out of state specialist (not to dox myself, but they're the team that also operated on Bindi Irwin!) and in my fear/panic before they told me to talk down the hall to the OR, I wrote this on my phone.

the poem was called testament.

Because he knows his greatest weapon is his determination.

He already knows how to skate, good enough to get a shot in the Olympics.

He's a great coach but he's no physical therapist. Levi can listen to his body and apply what he's doing in therapy,

Right?

He thought so.

Right up until he attempted his first jump and fell out, smacking his hip and elbow off the ice.

The first Thanksgiving after his injury is when he decided to stop coming around for holidays.

He despised the way his extended family treated him like a specimen under a scientist's microscope.

'Girls really dig scars, you'll be alright.'

'So, what do you see out of that eye? is it just black?'

'It was just a hobby, you can still get a real job.'

Kuchel didn't tolerate it.

Levi still only lasted twenty minutes.

So this is the mark he's leaving in the skating industry? A tragedy?

All he wanted was to make history, but not like this.

Hange is excitedly shoving the piece of paper they had you all sign inside a stray bottle they found; you grin when they drop it in the water and watch it float away. Levi is several steps behind you, brooding, but you know his heart is here with you all the same.

You made it. The sea will remember.

Kuchel's hand crushes yours as she screams. You don't let go, not until the baby is out.

In the aftermath, the girls at the brothel help you tend to them. When at last the boy is wrapped in her arms, you're by her side, brushing a lock out of her face.

"What will you name him?" you ask.

"Levi… his name is Levi."

You look down at Levi. He stares back with eyes the color of a winter sky—grey and blue and unmistakably hers.

"He has your eyes..."

Kuchel's tired smile crinkles. "Vibrant, aren't they?"
