Do you think, if Handler/Snicket ever wrote more stories set in the ASOUE-verse that he would continue to “translate” Sunny’s speech? Even once she’s grown and able to speak in full sentences and properly articulate what she wants to say?
Because that seems like a very Snicket thing to do for a couple of reasons:
1) People don’t always say exactly what they mean. And while Sunny would arguably be the least likely of the Baudelaires to beat around the bush, that brings me to 2) it’s possible Lemony might find another more succinct (or, as is sometimes the case, less succinct) way to rephrase/recontextualize Sunny’s comments
Examples:
“I can’t believe you’ve done this!” Sunny shrieked, meaning “I expected you might betray us at some point, but this is far earlier than any of us could’ve foreseen!”
“I love this dish,” she said. But what she meant to say was “Our parents used to prepare this meal every Sunday and occasionally on Tuesdays if the sun was out, and even though I was only a baby at the time, I still have fond memories associated with this particular dish, because it reminds me of my family.”
Note: these are not Snicket quotes, just random phrases I thought up to use to illustrate my point
I can’t recall, I think there may have been an instance of this in The End. Anyway, I thought of it randomly and wanted to share it here.
TL;DR: if Lemony saw fit to translate Sunny’s dialogue for the audience, even when it’s no longer “baby talk,” I think that would be a very in-character thing for him to do.
