thinking about there being a tension in the curtis house thatâs been building for a few days and over dinner one night grouchily pony says âjesus darrel itâs like you hate us or somethingâ and darry, who is so completely not here here bc heâs trying not to holler or do something heâll regret, accidentally says âgod if onlyâ in the most wistful tone that has both his brothers snapping their necks to look at him
and soda, in a low voice that sounds like itâs taking everything in him to not panic, asks âwhat does that mean?â
eyes widening darry forces a laugh out and a fake smile that hardly reaches his cheeks let alone his eyes. âi didnât mean to say thatâ
ponyboy waits, âbut you did, so.â his voice is steady in the way that only a fresh teenagers could be; ready to be angry, better yet, ready to force his actual feelings down because itâll be easier to hit and holler than feel upset. âwhat the heck does that meanâ
thereâs no escaping. he knows this, which might be part of why darry huffs through his nose and leans back in his chair. theyâre silent for a moment as darry looks around; sodaâs looking down at his plate, obviously having lost his appetite. the clock says itâs 6:36 pm, a later dinner than usual but eating dinner as a family isnât a tradition thatâs supposed to go away anytime soon. ponyboyâs doing his best to stare darry down, but darry knows his baby brother well enough to know that the kidâs staring into space in an ill attempt to not feel anything.
unfortunately, heâs done the same thing too many times to be able to do it again tonight. âiâm not saying i do hate yall, i just think itâd be easier if i did.â and he probably shouldnât add the next part, but itâs only fair to be honest. âat least that way i wouldnât be working myself into a stupor for feeling guilty.â
âwhat are you guilty of?â soda asks in that same melancholy tone heâs been harboring all week.
darry doesnât want to admit this, but heâs been having these dreams where heâs still in school and the boys arenât anything more than an afterthought. if heâs truthful those are one of his favorite dreams because itâs the only time he ever wakes up with a smile.
but then, once he gets out the bed and starts getting ready for the day, reality sets in and heâs quickly disappointed. and then he gets those chest stabs that always come along with guilty feelings.
all because he felt disappointed. because shouldnât he be waking up with a smile everyday since his brothers arenât living in a foster home with random strangers? shouldnât he be happy that he got to keep his brothers even if he had threw all his goals away? even if he did âthrow it all awayâ heâs got them and that ought to count for something right?
âitâs not fair,â he ends. âitâd be a lot easier if i did hate yall because id be able to just walk away, guilt free. but thatâs never gonna happen,â he adds. darryâs started collecting their plates before he catches sight of ponyboys quivering lip and the shininess of sodapops eyes. âbecause i donât hate yall. i love you. both of you. and that ainât never gonna change no matter how much i wish it on a bad day, hear?â
he feels that guilt creeping up again when pony gives him a look that he hasnât seen since the kid was five years old and darry shoved him away to go play with the big kids. his eyes are all squinty and his mouth is frowned and heâs taking shallow breaths like itâs all he can do to keep from sobbing. âyou promise?â
a quick glance tells him soda ainât fairing no better. heâs got his head laid on the table, not even bothering to wipe the tears cascading down his face.
darry sighs and leaves the table to put the plates in the sink. turning the tap on he says, âyou know, when you were born soda cried his eyes out.â
âreally?â
âmhm. that christmas, he made me write santa asking to exchange you for a real pony.â
he can hear ponyâs wet gasp and the distinct sound of someoneâs chair getting kicked. âsoda!â
âdarrel!â
it takes everything in him not to laugh yet as he scrubs the plates. âyeah, he told mama he hated you and wasnât gonna love you unless you became a real pony.â
âdarry, you said you wouldnât tell him-â
âitâs alright though,â he says when he turns around and sees the crestfallen look on ponyboyâs face. âcause i said the same thing when soda was born.â
âyou did?â they ask at the same time.
âyeah, i followed daddy around everywhere right? and when they told me they were pregnant with soda, i said i didnât want a brother because then iâd have to share daddy. fast forward, im holding a baby soda in my arms and i look at his tiny face and say âi didnât want youâ then mama asked why and i said âcause i hate him!â and you know what mama did?â
heâs never seen them both so silent and still, but theyâre clearly enraptured by his story because neither make an attempt to answer. âshe laughed right in my face. she laughed and sheâd said âno you donât. you can dislike him all you want, but sodapop is family and you donât hate family.â mama was right, of course. later that night daddy said he found me in the crib with soda, both of us knocked out but i had let you use my arm as a pillow.
and christmas day, pones, you spat up all over my new sweater and soda âbout laughed himself silly declaring he loved you and you were his new favorite.â
the plates are drying on the counter with darry takes his seat again. both the boys have shiny eyes but also have a small smile attempting to grow.
darry doesnât mean half the shit he says when heâs feeling stuck. heâs changes his mind on things every second of every day, because this his first time being a real adult or a guardian, but the only thing he hasnât changed his mind on is loving his brothers.
even though he wishes he were still in college, darry hasnât for a second regretted loving them enough to give up his dreams to be their legal guardian and keep them all together.
sometimes he has to remind himself that he doesnât regret it, and sometimes he has to remind them, but thatâs alright. because at the end of the day, theyâre all together. at the end of the day heâs got both his brothers and (if he takes the time to spray their perfume and cologne on their pillows) itâs almost like heâs still got his parents too

Sodapop knows something that Ponyboy still doesn't know and Darry forgot
Thinking about the au where Ponyboy actually drowns and dies and Darry staying up late reading the newspaper on the recliner way past dark and falling asleep and while he's dozing off he feels a pressure on him and for a split second through his lashes he can still see and feel Ponyboy laying on his lap like he used to when he was little
Dally gets a job at the DX station with Soda and Steve to stay out of trouble (or as part of probation). Working shifts together forces Dally into Soda's sunny orbit. Soda teaches Dally how to handle customers without threatening them. Lots of banter, shared cigarettes, greasy hands, and stolen moments in the back supply room when Steve is out making deliveries.

thinking about stevepop.
steve is all angles and muscles. he is rough around the edges and angry to his core. it shows in his appearance and even his clothes. his hair is locked in place with grease. a sharp, strong nose, angular eyebrows, a mouth thatâs most often scowling. denim on denim; heâs encased in the tough fabric.Â
soda is different. he wear his heart on his sleeve, unafraid to laugh or cry or yell. he feels everything so intently. his face is always crinkled in some kind of emotion, whether heâs grinning with excitement or thinking hard, with his eyebrows furrowed. heâs been called soft his whole life, but that doesnât stop him from feeling. from living. his movie-star features are softer and more delicate, and the flannels he loves are always soft and warm.Â
soda is labeled a bawl-baby, a pretty boy.Â
steve canât remember the last time he cried, and nobody has ever called him pretty.Â
steve is afraid of hurting soda with all of his sharp edges, afraid of crushing him under the weight of his anger.Â
but soda is more than his softness, and he knows steve is more than his anger, too.Â
he is determined to show steve that itâs okay. itâs okay to be tough; the world hasnât been kind to him, but soda will be. itâs okay to let people in. itâs okay to sit with your emotionsâ all of them.Â
soda kisses the bumpy, broken bridge of steveâs nose and calls him pretty and wears his jean jacket and steve can almost feel himself melting.
Song lyrics that reminds me of Ponyboy.
Sodapop: i feel like if one of us were a girl we'd be a 100% together
Steve: i'd definitely want to be the girl though
Sodapop: why's that?
Steve: i wouldn't want you to be different
