And so begins the chapter 3 thoughts! Unfortunately, due to my decision of doing these left to right, we are starting with my least favorite chapter in the game, and, still unfortunately, completing her gallery did not change my mind on that.
Much like her chapter 2, The EotN is a very single minded vessel. She is reached by disappointing The Adversary without forcing her to completely reconsider her worldview. This leads to a character extremely similar to The Adversary, but bigger, scarier, and much, much angrier. The Adversary's desire for Quiet to initiate the fight is gone, replaced by a deep down understanding that Quiet is simply too weak to give her the fight she wants, and this only makes her angrier. She wants to fight Quiet, and blames him for his weakness. This makes her angrier, which makes her want to fight him even more. This creates a wonderful feedback loop that results in a version of The Princess that is very angry and very sad and can't actually do anything about it but she's too sad and angry to realize that. Her personality is very fun to think about.
However, as established by other determined vessels like The Razor and The Beast, this single minded anger makes for a very linear chapter. You either free her or fight her, which is only differentiated by when along the linear path you decide to be done with the chapter, but of course, this is a chapter 3! There are two different ways to enter this chapter, either attempting to free The Adversary or attempting to kill her poorly. This leads to Quiet gaining The Voice of the Skeptic or Hunted respectively. This should mean that there's two different ways to experience the chapter, but the two variations of the chapter play out nearly exactly the same. There's the occasional interesting moment, such as The Skeptic convincing The Stubborn to want to free The Princess out of his spiteful hatred of The Narrator, but for the most part Hunted and Skeptic say the exact same things with slightly different phrasing. The only major difference between the two occur if you lead EotN out of the cabin, which is what happens every time you play the chapter unless you actively try not to. Leaving with The Hunted gives you the option to give EotN the fight she always wanted, which is admittedly a very cool scene, and with the power of The Skeptic, you can pick between five different things to say to The Princess that all result in nearly the exact same dialogue followed by no cool fight scene.
I really like The Eye of the Needle as a princess. Her design is cool and her personality is tragic and interesting in a way that I love. However, I am not at all fond of EotN as a chapter. Having a cool princess with a cool personality doesn't matter if you can't talk to her or see how she responds to different situations.
Much like The Razor and The Beast, this chapter's linearity disappointed me, and this chapter's story doesn't interest me enough to make up for it the way other chapters do. I understand why this chapter is the way that it is, and I don't think its a bad chapter, but I don't like it.
Unfortunately, The Princess being a giant muscular dragon woman is not quite enough to win me over.
