Interlude III (Exodus in America)
She let her head fall back and watched the stars turn overhead. For who shall have pity upon thee, O Jerusalem? An eddy of smoke from the chimney muddied the stars so that they blinked fitfully. Wilt thou indeed be unto me as a deceitful brook, as waters that fail? When she had taken what she could from the night air and returned inside, Arthur was asleep, slumped in his chair with his legs stuck out in front of him and arms crossed over his chest. His hair hung sweetly in his face, and the last light of the fire lay along his cheek, suffusing the sun-kissed freckles, the scars. She remembered the first time she’d seen his face up close, dappled in blood. A strange feeling rose in her, a sort of humming in her chest, the rumble of an oncoming train.
