Saung Angklung Mang Udjo: a Must-Visit Cultural and Educational Destination in Bandung

The place provides a complete package for those who want to learn about Sundanese culture, especially angklung. Visitors will see an endearing performance in a small amphitheater surrounded by a bamboo forest. The spectacular short show performances feature angklung orchestra, wayang golek (puppet) show, Sundanese traditional dance, and other Sundanese traditional arts.
Established in 1966, Udjo Ngalagena (1929-2001) built the attraction together with his wife believing in his love of Sundanese culture and art. Conserving Sundanese traditional art and culture is Udjo’s main purpose in building the house. The house is thriving for decades and slowly getting the respect and recognition from the world. In November 2010, nine years after Udjo’s death, angklung is recognized as one of the Intangible Cultural Heritages by UNESCO.
Hundreds of visitors, both domestic and international, are coming every day mainly to see the performance, but there are also people who are chilling out around bamboo forest. The bamboo forest in Saung Angklung Mang Udjo is a conservation and preservation site in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. b. Wayang Golek (Wooden Puppet)
The other performance Saung Angklung Mang Udjo offers is wayang golek (wooden puppet) show. The show consists of Sundanese puppet play that is performed by a single man behind the stage. He usually tells a folktale to the viewer through the puppet play. The man who plays the puppet has to voice over more than one puppet.
c. Tari Topeng (Masked Dance)
Beside the puppet play, the visitors can watch a play by women through a traditional dancing called Tari Topeng (Masked Dance). The dance tells a folktale back from the Majapahit era. In the beginning, the dancers are not wearing a mask from the beginning of the play. Rather, the dancers wear it to show a certain development on the story and the characters’ emotions.
Helaran comes from a Sundanese language which means parade. In the past, this is a ceremony where one is being grateful to God for giving the rain, but it changes its function. The ceremony means for boy who has done khitan. The performers demonstrate the helaran ceremony to show the Sundanese culture that ever exists.

The opening hours for Saung Angklung Mang Udjo is 08.00 am. to 22.00 pm. every day. For local visitors, the ticket price costs IDR 70.000,- for adult and IDR 50.000,- for children on weekdays. While on weekend and holiday, it costs ID 75.000,- for adult and IDR 50.000,- for children. However, Saung Angklung Mang Udjo offers different price for foreign visitors. For foreign visitors, the ticket costs IDR 110.000,- for adults and IDR 70.000,- for children on weekdays and adds up to IDR 10.000,- for each category on weekend and holiday.
Saung Angklung Mang Udjo provides a store for the visitors who want to bring home some merchandise. The store sells variety of merchandise that is made from bamboo. It sells merchandise like angklung, wooden puppet, key ring, and other traditional music instruments. And for visitors who want to stay longer in Saung Angklung Mang Udjo’s area, visitors can rent a guest house there. Visitors can feel the Sundanese atmosphere longer by renting the guest house.
There is also a workshop for visitors to see how to make an angklung. The employee also allows visitors who want to try making angklung. The employee will teach visitors how to make an angklung. The angklung that the visitor has made will be the visitor’s possession once it is finished.
To get to Saung Angklung Mang Udjo by car from Jakarta, visitors can go to all the way to Cipularang. Arriving around Cipularang, go through Pasopati flyover and follow the street sign to Cicaheum. Right about 100 meters around Cicaheum terminal, there will be a street sign that directs to Padasuka street. If it is by public transportation, the safest and fastest public transportation is taxi. If riding taxi isn’t comfortable and riding bus is more preferable, stop at Padasuka conjunction or 100 meters before Cicaheum. Then go to Saung Angklung Mang Udjo by ojek or walking for about 500 meters.
