It’s an unpopular opinion but it is absolutely and completely true. I’ve never seen someone who creates for engagement happy with the engagement they get. I posit they can’t ever be happy that way because it will NEVER be enough

You have to rest in your own desire to create.

But, because I see statements like this turn into a sort of general notion of “it’s bad to want validation or attention or engagement”, and to me, that’s not what this means.

It’s perfectly valid to want people to like and engage with what you create. In a general sense, when you create anything, you do it to share with other human beings. Art, craft, food, anything you create is a way to connect with others through our shared humanity.

And wanting someone to like you fanart or read your fanfic is part of that.

the words used by OP is decouple, and this is important. Nothing wrong wanting engagement. But it cannot be tightly coupled with the drive to create.

Julian Devorak truly is the character of all time. To me. He’s a fugitive plague doctor with a leech collection. He runs a clinic in the neglected side of town offering free medical care to the impoverished. He believes his life and needs are expendable. He has memory loss and believes he’s cursed to take others’ wounds. He didn’t commit the murder he’s accused of but won’t let anyone exonerate him and gives a dramatic speech to a jeering crowd before being hanged. He comes back to life and learns that friendship is the real magic. He tells you he loves you before he makes a deal with the Devil. He plays the viola and carries multiple kinds of counterfeit currency. He likes romantic cliches but is flustered by affection. He is regularly bullied by his ex’s pet snake and some raven that claimed him. He knows 7 languages. He puts vodka in his mouthwash and five hour energy in his coffee. He laughs like Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park. He’s as agile as a cat. He is the clumsiest man alive. He’s a 6’4 bisexual masochistic sub with hairy tits and no ass. Fuck.

turns out drawing is a lot easier when you're not torturing yourself over perfection or drawing something good good. surely this lesson will stick with me longer that a day.
